2022 Elena stock sale 84.6K.
2023 reserve contribution 51K.
2024 monthly surplus.
Some entries were rough.
Some estimates.
Then uses.
Diane medical.
Lucas wedding.
Liam support.
Brandon truck.
Lake Geneva.
Blue Harbor duplex.
Taxes.
Repairs.
The most revealing column:
VISIBLE.
Meaning what I knew.
Lucas wedding $35K, visible.
Blue Harbor contribution $22K, hidden.
Diane surgery $6.4K visible.
Additional $9.8K hidden.
Liam rent $4K visible.
Additional $18K hidden.
My money had been catalogued.
Then a note:
E comfortable if framed family.
Another:
Keep wire <10K.
There.
Claire photographed.
Brandon’s attorney objected later that notes reflected financial planning not deception.
But “keep wire <10K” aligned bank threshold.
Then:
If E sees Blue Harbor, say Diane funded.
That line.
I sat on office floor.
Claire crouched.
“Elena.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
“I’m not surprised anymore.”
That was lie.
Then another page.
MARGARET.
No amount.
Just:
Temporary. Too curious.
My blood turned cold.
“Mom.”
She came.
I showed.
Her face changed.
“He planned to get me out.”
Maybe.
The ledger entry dated six weeks earlier, shortly after Mom moved in.
Notes:
Desk questions.
Mail.
Need boundaries.
Then later:
10.5 confusion.
Could use.
We stared.
“Could use what?”
The exact accusation.
Claire photographed.
The ledger suggested Brandon contemplated using the $10,500 transfer as a “confusion” involving Margaret.
Did he intentionally stage missing cash to eject her?
The prosecutor would decide if criminal.
But civilly, devastating.
Then Mom remembered more.
A week before assault, Brandon asked:
“Do you ever borrow cash without asking?”
She thought joke.
“No.”
Then:
“Would Elena believe you if something went missing?”
She had laughed.
“I hope.”
He was testing.
Then Diane called again.
She had confronted Lucas.
Lucas said:
“Brandon told us Elena wanted family investments.”
He had seen gift letter.
He believed.
But one text contradicted full innocence.
Lucas to Brandon months earlier:
Does E know title is Mom only?
Brandon:
She doesn't care about legal details.
Lucas:
Make sure.
Brandon:
Handled.
Not proof Lucas knew forgery.
But he suspected Elena not involved in title.
Then Liam.
He had received money but less knowledge.
He told Diane:
“I thought it was Brandon’s bonus.”
Then:
“I’m not giving it back. I spent it.”
Civil issues.
No one instantly criminal.
Then police assault case.
Brandon offered to reimburse Mom medical costs if she “corrected” statement to say mutual confrontation.
His lawyer sent settlement-like? That could be improper witness influence. Probably lawyer wouldn't. Brandon texted Mom directly despite no-contact? At that point no protective order maybe.
I’M SORRY I HIT YOU. IF YOU TELL POLICE YOU GRABBED ME FIRST WE CAN END THIS.
Mom forwarded.
That was clear.
Police added to file.
Then Mom finally became angry instead of afraid.
“I did not touch him.”
She wrote no reply.
Then divorce temporary hearing.
Brandon’s counsel:
“Elena abandoned marital residence.”
Claire:
“She left after client witnessed petitioner strike her mother.”
Then financial.
Brandon argued Blue Harbor and DMB were family investments authorized verbally.
Judge asked:
“Why title solely mother-in-law?”
Brandon:
“Estate planning.”
“Why wife not on LLC?”
“Because she preferred not managing.”
“Why gift letters?”
“She agreed.”
Claire:
“We contest authenticity.”
Judge ordered forensic examination, accounting, freeze on sale/refinance of properties.
Then ordered Brandon provide complete devices/accounts relevant.
He looked at me.
Murderous?
No.
Cold.
Then hallway he approached too close.
Bailiff stopped.
“No contact.”
He laughed.
“I wasn’t talking.”
Then Claire said:
“Do not react.”
I didn’t.
After hearing, Nora called.
She had found rent deposits from Lake Geneva flowing into Blue Harbor account after duplex opened.
So the two hidden properties were financially linked.
Then rent money paid:
Brandon’s truck loan.
Lucas credit card.
Diane utilities.
Liam rent.
And $18,000 to a brokerage account.
Owner:
Brandon Brooks.
At last, money in his own name.
“What account?”
A brokerage he had never disclosed in initial divorce financial statement.
Balance:
$63,411.
Claire stared.
“Now we have concealed marital asset after filing.”
