Chapter 17 - The Letter To Me

My letter came six months later.
Through approved prison mail, forwarded to Claire first because I had asked.
She called.
“Do you want?”
“Yes.”
Brandon wrote:
Elena,
The hardest thing to admit is I did not think of what I was doing as stealing because I believed I had a right to decide where our surplus went.
Then:
That belief was the theft.
I paused.
Then:
I resented your income.
There.
Not because she flaunted.
Because it made him feel dependent.
“You never made me feel small deliberately. I made your competence an insult.”
Then:
“I wanted my mother and brothers to have assets that did not depend on asking you.”
Yet money depended on me.
“I told myself I was protecting pride.”
Then:
“I used your signature because I knew actual consent might be no.”
Then:
“I created the fake email because I wanted my family to believe you were part of it, and I wanted you never to know enough to object.”
Then Mom.
“Margaret saw the Blue Harbor envelope. I panicked. The $10,500 transfer had just happened. I wrote accusation before confronting because I wanted a reason to remove her.”
Then:
“I did not plan to hit her. That happened because she said Blue Harbor and I lost control.”
Not excuse.
Then:
“When I gave you ultimatum, I believed you would choose marriage.”
There.
“I had watched you choose us for seven years.”
That sentence.
He had mistaken generosity for surrender.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
No ask reconciliation.
Then:
“I do not expect answer.”
I read twice.
Then I cried.
Not because wanted back.
Because he finally described marriage I had lived without seeing.
He depended on me choosing them.
Every time.
Until I didn’t.
Then Mom asked:
“Are you writing?”
“No.”
Months later I did.
One paragraph:
I received your letter. I accept your apology. I do not forgive yet, and I do not want contact beyond legal matters. I hope you use remaining sentence to understand why love without consent became control.
Then sent through proper channel.
He did not respond.
Good.
Then life.
I moved into condo rental downtown.
Not River North.
Smaller.
Mine.
Mom visited.
No living.
Then work.
I had taken leave during case.
Returned.
Promotion opportunity.
I almost declined because exhaustion.
My boss said:
“You do not have to prove anything.”
I accepted later because wanted job, not revenge success.
Director of operations strategy.
Pay raise.
I put bonus into account.
I watched deposit.
No one moved.
Then I invested with adviser.
Independent.
Then my father’s death grief resurfaced.
Mom had moved in because Dad died.
If he lived, would this be discovered?
Maybe later.
No use.
Mom said:
“Your father would have thrown Brandon out.”
Maybe.
I smiled.
“He also never read bank statements.”
We laughed.
Then anniversary of assault.
Mom’s cheek fully healed.
No scar.
She asked:
“Do you remember date?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t want.”
We went botanical garden.
No ritual.
Then a year after divorce, Diane invited Mom and me? Maybe not.
Family boundaries.
Mom still spoke to Diane occasionally.
I allowed? Not mine.
Then surprising:
Mom said:
“Diane needs friend too.”
I stiffened.
“You can.”
No controlling.
They met for coffee.
Their relationship was theirs.
