Chapter 8 - The Call From His Mother

Diane came to the hotel three days after discovery.

Not alone.

Her attorney.

She sat across from Mom.

Both women had known each other seven years.

One had swollen cheek from Diane’s son.

The other had corporate documents in her name from same son.

Diane looked at Margaret.

“I’m sorry.”

Mom nodded.

Not forgiveness.

Then Diane to me.

“I need tell exactly what I signed.”

She brought timeline.

After knee surgery, Brandon visited with folder.

He said:

“Mom, this will protect you if something happens.”

She signed Blue Harbor.

Then six months later another:

“Estate update.”

That was family preservation trust.

She signed.

Did she read?

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I trusted him.”

Mom looked at me.

Same word.

Then:

“Did you know Elena money?”

“No.”

“Did you receive benefit?”

“Yes.”

Some.

Property taxes paid for her house one year.

Medical card paid.

Utilities.

She thought Brandon.

She should have asked.

Then Lucas management fee.

She knew he managed duplex but believed it was Brandon and Elena’s investment for family.

“Why title yours?”

“Brandon said financing.”

Then:

“Did you ever ask Elena?”

“No.”

That omission mattered.

Diane cried.

“I should have.”

I said nothing.

Then trust.

The Bermuda custodian statements mailed electronically to Brandon.

Diane never logged.

Balance now $42,300 with gains.

Her attorney said:

“My client will not authorize movement except court order.”

Then:

“She is prepared to resign any management and consent to freeze.”

Good.

Then a harder fact.

Diane had received one email supposedly from me:

Mom, please sign whatever Brandon sends. We want you protected.

Fake domain.

She believed.

She replied:

Love you, sweetheart.

That broke me.

Brandon had impersonated me not only to banks.

To his mother.

He used my affection as authentication.

Then Claire asked:

“Any other emails?”

Diane handed.

One:

Elena:

Please don't mention Lake Geneva place yet. I want surprise when finances settle.

Diane replied:

Of course.

That explains why she never told.

Another:

We’re helping Lucas, but Elena gets sensitive about numbers. Don’t bring up exact amount.

Diane believed it came from me? The fake email.

She thought I was asking secrecy from myself.

Absurd, but because email display name just Elena.

Then Mom said:

“Brandon created version of Elena for each of you.”

Yes.

To me, responsible husband.

To his family, generous wife authorizing.

To banks, signed donor.

To court now, unstable spouse abandoning.

To Mom, thief.

He moved roles.

Then Diane asked:

“Why hit Margaret?”

I said:

“She saw Blue Harbor paper.”

Diane covered mouth.

Then:

“He was protecting this.”

Likely.

Then Diane said something I had not expected.

“Brandon asked me last month if you and he ever divorced, would family gifts stay mine.”

My skin chilled.

“What did you say?”

“I said I didn't know.”

“When?”

Four weeks before assault.

He was thinking divorce.

Before I left.

Then:

“He said, ‘Elena would never come after you.’”

I laughed without humor.

He counted on my loyalty.

Then Claire asked:

“Any reason he expected divorce?”

Diane hesitated.

“He complained Margaret moving in changed things.”

Then:

“He said Elena is going to start looking at everything.”

Mom had made him nervous.

Not because she stole.

Because her presence brought another adult into home.

She asked questions.

“What’s this mail?”

“Why do you have separate property company?”

“Why is Elena’s name missing?”

Maybe Brandon saw threat.

Then another text from Brandon to Diane:

Margaret snoops.

Diane:

She’s grieving. Be kind.

Brandon:

She is turning Elena against me.

That was two weeks before assault.

Then:

Need get her out.

The ultimatum had been planned emotionally, even if slap spontaneous.

Then Claire said:

“We need to think about protective order for Margaret.”

Mom resisted.

“He’s not coming.”

Brandon had already texted her.

Call history.

Then unknown number left voicemail:

You ruined my marriage.

It was Brandon.

He blamed her.

We filed temporary restraining/no-contact related assault proceedings.

The court granted limited protective order barring direct contact with Margaret except through counsel.

Then Brandon violated within hours?

No. He stopped.

He was controlling, not stupid after lawyers.

Then forensic accountant found a draft email in disclosed laptop image.

To Diane, unsent:

If Elena asks, say Blue Harbor was your idea.

Another draft:

Margaret took cash. She’s confused lately.

Confused.

He was preparing to attack my mother’s credibility.

Mom stared.

“He thinks I’m senile.”

“No.”

Then another file:

MARGARET INCIDENT NOTES.

Dates she forgot keys.

Left stove light? Not stove on, just light.

Asked same question twice.

He had been building narrative that she was confused.

Why?

If she reported seeing financial papers, he could say mistaken.

Then Claire:

“Elena, this may be why the accusation was $10,500. He wasn’t only getting her out. He was making her look financially untrustworthy.”

A thief.

Confused.

May you like

Dependent.

He wanted any future statement from Margaret contaminated before she made it.
