Chapter 10 - The Cash That Never Existed

Police searched financial records for cash.
Brandon had claimed he accumulated $10,500 over months.
No withdrawals.
He could have been paid cash?
His employer verified no cash bonuses.
He claimed sale of motorcycle parts.
No receipts.
Possible.
But then task note.
10.5.
Then Blue Harbor wire three days before.
Same amount.
Then Mom’s account of empty drawer.
Then Brandon’s text after she cleaned:
Did you touch envelope with blue logo?
She answered:
I dusted papers. Nothing else.
This text existed from hours before slap.
He already knew Blue Harbor.
Then twenty minutes later:
Where’s my cash?
Mom:
What cash?
The timeline.
He introduced cash after asking blue envelope.
That was powerful.
Then an email he sent himself at 2:31 p.m.:
Margaret took 10,500.
Before he confronted her physically?
The assault happened around 4:40, but he claimed discovered after package trip around 4:30.
He documented accusation two hours before.
That proved premeditation.
How did we know assault time? Grocery receipt and building access.
He had decided Margaret “stole” before claimed discovery.
Claire stared.
“That’s huge.”
Then why wait?
Maybe he planned confrontation when I returned.
To force ultimatum with me witnessing.
The violence might have escalated, but accusation staged.
Then building access logs showed Brandon did not leave to “pick up package” at all.
His key fob stayed inside building from noon until after we left.
He lied about leaving and returning.
No package.
He fabricated whole setup.
He had been home.
Mom thought he returned because she heard office door and he walked in? Maybe he had been in gym/garage within building, no fob. Still could claim. But no external.
Then prosecutor on assault could use staged context.
The missing cash never existed with strong evidence.
Then why two slaps?
Mom testified:
After he asked cash, she said:
“There wasn’t any.”
He called liar.
She said:
“I saw Blue Harbor statement.”
That was the trigger.
He slapped.
I opened door after first.
Then second happened in front of me when she repeated:
“I didn’t take anything.”
There.
Now I remembered exactly.
The blue vase fell after second slap.
It was not random argument.
He hit witness who said name.
Then my own memory improved under stress? Need careful. We had heard one and saw second. Good.
Then Claire said:
“You need tell detective exact, including what you didn’t witness.”
I did.
No embellishment.
Then Brandon’s attorney pivoted.
He stopped claiming cash theft as criminal certainty.
Filed:
Mr. Brooks believed cash missing based on his own records.
But why email before?
Maybe estimate.
Weak.
Then he offered civil settlement.
Brandon would consent to divorce, give me 55 percent condo equity, and assign half Blue Harbor property equity if I agreed:
no fraud allegations publicly
withdraw objection to family gifts
Margaret request dismissal of battery complaint where legally permissible
confidentiality.
Claire laughed.
“No.”
I said:
“Not because revenge.”
“Because terms require false narrative.”
Yes.
We countered with transparent asset valuation.
No interference with criminal.
Then he called me through unknown number.
I answered accidentally.
“Elena.”
I froze.
“You ruined everything.”
I hung up.
He called again.
Blocked.
No threat.
Still violation of no direct contact only with Margaret, not me. Divorce lawyers advised no communication.
Then one email:
You know I was building this for us.
I almost responded.
Claire said:
“Send to me.”
I did.
For us.
Yet trust beneficiaries excluded me.
Blue Harbor title excluded.
Lake Geneva excluded.
His brokerage private.
The only place I appeared was as funding source and forged donor.
Then Nora found a draft estate plan on Brandon laptop.
If he died:
Blue Harbor interest? He did not formally own, but trustee powers.
His personal brokerage to Diane, then brothers.
My name absent from a separate memorandum.
Was that legally binding? No.
But mindset.
Then:
“Maybe he thought your own assets enough.”
Claire offered possibility.
Still not excuse.
I did not need make him cartoon.
Maybe Brandon genuinely believed I was financially secure, so moving our surplus to his family “balanced” wealth.
He never told.
Control.
Then Diane sent a voice message she found from Brandon:
Mom, don’t worry about Elena. She has her retirement, stock, everything. This side is for us.
This side.
A hidden family economy inside marriage.
That was what broke me more than slap.
May you like
I had thought his family was mine.
He had always maintained border.
