Chapter 8 - Brendan Is Not Innocent

Not guilty of espionage is a low bar for being a decent husband.
Brendan seemed confused by that.
His lawyer told reporters federal investigators found no evidence he knew about restricted exports.
Brendan acted relieved.
Then told me through app:
“See? I told you I wasn’t part of it.”
I answered:
“You dragged a pregnant woman across a wet floor.”
Silence.
Then:
“I know.”
Good.
No conflating.
Then financial investigation.
He accepted $86,700 through inflated foundation contracts.
Was that criminal fraud?
Prosecutors considered.
He had work product.
Invoices.
Some questionable.
He agreed to repay $41,000 determined excess and enter civil settlement with foundation receiver.
No federal felony.
Tax corrections.
Professional embarrassment.
His design company survived.
Then local assault plea.
He pleaded no contest/guilty to misdemeanor assault depending jurisdiction.
Probation.
Anger management.
No contact except court approved communication.
No jail.
Diane screamed from jail phone to attorney:
“My son is admitting to something he didn’t do.”
Video existed.
Brendan finally stopped listening.
Then Jessica.
She accepted plea for misdemeanor assault for rag and attempted interference with property? The purse search maybe no completed theft. Could be deferred prosecution with cooperation. Let's say probation and community service.
She and Brendan broke up.
Not because morality only.
He learned she had been reporting on him to Diane too.
Jessica sent Diane details:
Brendan is drinking again.
Brendan’s company cash flow.
Brendan complains about Cassidy.
Diane paid.
Brendan felt betrayed.
I almost told him:
Now you understand.
I didn’t.
His lesson.
Then custody preparation.
My baby was due in five weeks.
Brendan sought future parenting.
My lawyer did not ask to terminate rights absent basis.
He assaulted me.
Bad.
But one incident plus history of control.
We requested:
Supervised initial visits.
No Diane or Jessica contact.
Parenting program.
No firearms? Not necessary.
Communication through app.
No decision authority over classified/security matters.
Then Brendan asked mediation.
I agreed after birth, not before.
Then one more domestic revelation.
During marriage, Brendan had hidden two of Diane’s verbal attacks from me.
Why?
“Because she’s my mother.”
Pattern.
Not as severe as other stories, but.
He had seen Diane grab my wrist once.
Told:
“She’s old fashioned.”
He had let mother set tone.
Then during divorce, he allowed Jessica to mock.
He wanted me smaller because new girlfriend watching.
At dinner, he performed cruelty.
His own choice.
Then hospital.
Labor began at 38 weeks.
Natural? Maybe because user says pregnant ex-wife, not previous C-section. Fine.
I called my father.
Then lawyer.
Then hospital.
Did not call Brendan directly.
Court communication app triggered notice after admission.
He asked to come.
I said:
“No delivery room.”
He replied:
“Can I wait hospital?”
Security assessment said yes in separate area with escort after court arrangement.
I allowed.
Why?
He was father.
Not my partner.
Then twelve hours later, Samuel Thomas Carter was born.
Seven pounds.
Healthy.
I cried.
Dad held grandson after me.
Then Brendan met under supervision two hours later.
He walked in.
Saw baby.
Stopped.
No joke.
No arrogance.
“Hi.”
He looked at me.
“Can I hold him?”
I hesitated.
Nurse looked.
I nodded.
Brendan washed hands.
Sat.
I placed Samuel in his arms.
He cried.
Real.
Then whispered:
“I’m sorry your first memory of me will always be after what I did to your mom.”
Samuel slept.
No forgiveness from newborn.
Good.
Then Brendan returned him without being asked.
May you like
That mattered.
Continue to the next part: Cassidy gives birth safely and allows Brendan to meet his son, but fatherhood begins under boundaries rather than automatic access.
