Chapter 19 - The Mansion Without Diane

Years after forfeiture and sale, the old mansion became a boutique conference venue.

Not family.

A company bought.

Renovated.

The chandelier remained.

I saw photo online.

For a second, water hit me again.

Body memory.

Then I closed browser.

No need reclaim.

Later my company booked a compliance seminar there without knowing.

I discovered week before.

Cancel?

No.

Go?

Maybe.

I chose.

Walked into dining room.

Same chandelier.

Different furniture.

No Diane.

No Brendan laughter.

No dirty bucket.

I stood.

Then event coordinator asked:

“Everything okay?”

“Yes.”

No story.

I gave presentation on supply chain compliance.

Irony.

Export controls.

Vendor screening.

No mention family.

Professional.

Then during break, I walked foyer where Brendan had dragged me.

Nothing.

A rug.

Ordinary.

Places do not remember.

People do.

That helped.

Then I told Samuel later.

“You went back?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Work.”

“Was it weird?”

“Yes.”

“Did you cry?”

“No.”

“Disappointing.”

Teenagers.

Then Diane learned.

She wrote:

I am glad the house belongs to strangers.

Interesting.

Then she moved to assisted living at eighty? She was 50s at story start, years later maybe 70s. Fine.

Brendan handled.

No family wealth empire.

Legitimate remaining funds enough.

Then federal supervision ended.

Diane fully completed.

No ongoing court.

She asked once if she could come to my home for Samuel graduation party.

“No.”

She answered:

“Understood.”

Permanent boundary held.

Then party at neutral venue.

Diane there.

Dad there.

They finally spoke.

General Carter:

“Diane.”

“Thomas.”

Then:

“I owe your daughter…”

Dad lifted hand.

“She doesn’t need me collecting apologies.”

Good.

Diane nodded.

They discussed weather.

Power not used.

Then my father died? Maybe later, but no need yet. Could at Chapter 24.

Then Samuel graduated.

Went to university.

Brendan and Nicole.

Me.

Dad.

Diane.

One photo.

No one forced.

Samuel wanted.

I stood not next Diane but all frame.

History complex.

Then empty nest.

I dated? Could marry? Not necessary. Maybe later relationship with Evan? Avoid. My story does not need new romance.

I built life.

Travel.

Work.

Friends.

Then Brendan and I could text about Samuel without app after years.

No legal channel.

One day he wrote:

Mom in hospital. Nonemergency.

I replied:

Thanks for telling me.

No obligation visit.

Then Samuel called:

“Can you drive me?”

I did.

Not enter Diane room.

Waited cafeteria.

My boundary.

May you like

Samuel accepted.

Continue to the next part: Cassidy returns to the mansion years later for an ordinary work event and discovers the place no longer has any authority over her.
