Chapter 1 - Delta Protocol

The water hit me before I saw the bucket.

Freezing.

Filthy.

Heavy enough to knock the air out of my lungs.

I bent forward instinctively, both arms wrapping around my seven month pregnant belly while icy water poured from my hair and soaked through my green jacket.

My baby kicked violently.

I gasped.

Across the dining room, Brendan laughed.

His new girlfriend Jessica laughed with him.

My former mother in law Diane stood above me holding the empty metal bucket.

“There.”

Her diamonds glittered beneath the chandelier.

“Even pathetic street trash deserves a bath before getting kicked out.”

I stared at her.

My body was shaking.

Not from humiliation.

From cold.

And fear for the child inside me.

“Are you insane?”

Jessica picked up an old cleaning rag from the service cart.

She pushed it against my face.

“Dry yourself before you ruin the floor.”

I slapped her hand away.

Brendan grabbed my arm.

“Enough.”

His fingers dug into me.

“You came here because we needed to discuss the baby.”

“You invited me to discuss custody.”

“We did.”

He pulled me toward the foyer.

“And now the discussion is over.”

I twisted.

“Let go.”

He laughed.

“You don’t own anything here anymore, Cassidy.”

Then he reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a twenty dollar bill.

Dropped it onto my soaked jacket.

“Take this and disappear forever.”

Jessica smiled.

“Maybe find somewhere that accepts cash.”

Diane refilled her wine.

My entire marriage came back to me in one instant.

Every insult about my clothes.

Every joke about my lack of wealthy relatives.

Every time Brendan told his friends he had “rescued” me from an ordinary life.

Every time Diane asked whether my parents were “the sort of people who understood fine dining.”

I had let them think I was insignificant because telling the truth about my background had never been necessary.

Until now.

Brendan pulled again.

I ripped my arm free.

He stepped toward me.

I drove my elbow into his chest.

Not hard enough to injure.

Hard enough to create distance.

He stumbled into a chair.

Diane lunged for me.

I caught her wrist.

“Take your hands off me.”

She hissed.

“You little bitch.”

I shoved her away.

Then reached into my purse.

My phone.

Jessica laughed.

“Calling a homeless shelter?”

I ignored her.

There was one contact I had never removed.

A red encrypted icon.

No name publicly displayed.

I pressed it.

Connection established instantly.

A man answered.

“Cassidy?”

My father’s voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

Four star General Thomas Carter.

I looked directly at Brendan.

“Dad.”

The room changed.

Diane stopped lifting her wine.

Brendan frowned.

“Dad?”

General Carter’s voice sharpened.

“Cassidy, give me your location and situation.”

I answered with the address.

Then four words.

“Initiate Delta Protocol, sir.”

Silence.

My father knew exactly what that meant.

Not a private army sent because someone insulted his daughter.

Delta Protocol was an emergency authentication code established years earlier after my former counterintelligence assignment placed me on a continuing protected witness notification list.

I had never used it.

My father asked:

“Immediate physical threat?”

“Yes.”

“Medical risk?”

“I’m pregnant. I was assaulted.”

His voice changed.

“Understood.”

Then something unexpected.

“Cassidy, do not leave the property.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Stay where you are.”

The call disconnected.

Brendan snatched the phone from my hand.

“You psycho.”

Then the chandelier trembled.

Wine glasses rattled.

A low roar rolled across the ceiling.

Jessica stopped smiling.

Another roar.

Closer.

The windows vibrated.

Brendan looked toward the darkness beyond the glass.

“What the hell did you just do?”

White searchlights exploded across the dining room.

Three helicopters crossed above the estate.

Diane’s wineglass slipped from her hand.

I grabbed my phone back.

The secure line reconnected.

My father’s voice came through the speaker.

“Cassidy, hold position.”

Then:

“Brendan isn’t the target we came for.”

I looked at my ex husband.

He looked confused.

Jessica looked terrified.

But Diane looked different.

She looked like a woman who understood exactly what those words meant.

And she began backing toward the hallway.

Continue to the next part: Cassidy realizes Diane recognized Delta Protocol before anyone explained it, and the reason traces back to a classified case Cassidy believed had died years ago.
