Chapter 7 - The Photograph Before Brendan

The file contained a photograph.

Me.

Twenty six.

Army uniform.

Walking from a secure government building in Virginia.

Taken from distance.

Date:

Eight years before I met Brendan.

Beside:

CARTER, C.

POSSIBLE CI.

CI.

Counterintelligence.

They suspected.

Then another note:

DO NOT CONTACT.

Charles had not tried to hurt me.

He wanted distance.

So how did I end up marrying his son years later?

Chance.

Federal investigators confirmed Brendan and I met through an unrelated charity race.

No payment.

No arranged introduction.

No Diane manipulation before first date.

Then social media photo from race circulated.

Diane saw.

She recognized face.

Her text to Charles? He was alive then.

DIANE:

Brendan is dating that Carter woman.

CHARLES:

Which Carter?

Photo.

Then:

CHARLES:

End it.

My stomach twisted.

So Charles tried to stop relationship.

Did Brendan know?

Messages:

DIANE:

Your father thinks Cassidy is wrong for you.

BRENDAN:

He hasn’t met her.

DIANE:

He doesn’t need to.

BRENDAN:

I’m not asking permission.

Irony.

For once Brendan rebelled.

Then Charles died eleven months later.

Before wedding.

Officially heart attack.

No foul play evidence.

Then Diane changed tactic.

Instead of ending relationship, she encouraged marriage.

Why?

Charles gone.

She wanted access to me.

Then background investigation.

Then questions.

She assumed I might know where Lattice evidence was.

I did not.

Then the green notebook.

Charles had believed one Army investigator retained personal notes.

Not me specifically.

Diane connected.

She spent years looking.

No notebook existed.

Then why final dinner now?

Federal archive photo surfaced six weeks earlier, but Diane didn't know. What changed for her?

Divorce.

Pregnancy.

I had left Brendan.

She was losing access permanently.

Then she learned my father identity from Charles files three months before dinner.

That told her secure red app mattered.

She wanted one last chance to inspect.

Maybe capture contacts.

Not to kill me.

Not to kidnap.

Information theft.

The bucket attack grew from cruelty plus distraction.

Then Ward said:

“We believe Diane planned to photograph your secure interface to identify who still protected you.”

“That would tell her if Lattice active.”

“Yes.”

“Why care after all these years?”

“Because recent shipments restarted.”

She feared investigation.

Then my emergency activation ironically confirmed exactly what she feared.

The case was active.

Then General Carter.

He had not known my in laws linked because Lattice compartmented; he was not in my operational chain then? Good. Four star general now, at time maybe colonel and not involved.

He asked:

“Do you blame yourself for marrying Brendan?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“I do.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“I should have known the name Vale.”

“No. Charles wasn't public in file. I didn’t know.”

“You were my daughter.”

“And I was an adult officer with compartmented assignment you were not briefed into.”

He hated.

But true.

Then father said:

“I’m learning that rank is useless in family.”

I smiled.

“Finally.”

Then Brendan’s involvement.

No evidence he knew any national security aspect.

Federal prosecutors categorized him as witness and potential financial participant pending review.

He turned over devices.

Cooperated.

Diane called him traitor from detention after federal arrest.

Yes, she was arrested once enough evidence.

Charges included conspiracy to violate export controls, money laundering, obstruction, and related offenses.

No exact legal lecture.

Then Jessica cooperated and avoided federal charges on core national security case because she lacked knowledge, but faced local misdemeanor and potential obstruction for phone attempt.

Then Diane’s assault charge too.

Then prison? Later.

Then my pregnancy entered final month.

I moved to a different residence temporarily under security recommendation.

Not military base.

Normal protected address.

Brendan asked through app:

“Is the baby safe?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Are you?”

I stared.

For first time, he asked.

I answered:

“Yes.”

Then he wrote:

“I’m sorry I put my hands on you.”

No excuse.

I did not respond.

May you like

Not yet.

Continue to the next part: Federal investigators clear Brendan of knowing the military conspiracy, but the financial money he accepted and the violence he committed still leave him with consequences of his own.
