Chapter 20 - Diane’s Last Truth

Diane was seventy eight when heart disease worsened.

Not dying immediately.

But enough to think.

She asked for one final private conversation with me.

I declined first.

Then reconsidered.

Neutral assisted living garden.

She sat with blanket.

No jewelry.

“Cassidy.”

“Diane.”

Then:

“I lied about one thing.”

My body tightened.

“What?”

“Not in court.”

Good.

“About Charles.”

She looked toward trees.

“I told investigators I encouraged Brendan to marry you only after Charles died.”

“Yes.”

“That was mostly true.”

Mostly.

“Charles told me to end it.”

“Yes.”

“I pretended to try.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because by then I was curious.”

Before Charles died, she had already begun probing.

Not after.

“Did Charles know?”

“He suspected.”

“Did he ever tell Brendan why?”

“No.”

Then:

“Did you intend to use me before marriage?”

“I wanted access. Not harm.”

That still changed timeline slightly.

Why tell now?

“Because I do not want Samuel hearing a cleaner version later.”

Fair.

Then:

“Anything else?”

“No.”

I studied.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Then she smiled faintly.

“I have learned to stop while ahead.”

Maybe.

Then I asked:

“Did you ever actually like me?”

She looked surprised.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Sometimes.”

I laughed.

“Great.”

Then:

“You were funny when you forgot to defend yourself.”

That was weird.

Then:

“You loved Brendan before he became like us.”

I went quiet.

There had been good marriage years.

People forget.

Brendan and I cooked.

Traveled.

He held me after miscarriage? Did we have one? Not established. Avoid.

He supported career sometimes.

Then family influence, money, infidelity with Jessica after separation? He had girlfriend after divorce.

We had loved.

Then hurt.

Diane:

“I hated that he was softer with you.”

Maybe why she undermined.

Then final:

“I am sorry I tried to make softness shameful.”

That was deeper.

I nodded.

“I forgive you.”

First time aloud.

Diane cried.

Not relief performance.

Then:

“Thank you.”

I added:

“You still are not coming to my house.”

She laughed.

“I know.”

Good.

Then Samuel asked later:

“What did she say?”

“Her truth.”

“What?”

“Private.”

He accepted.

Not every confession belongs to child.

Then Diane died two years later.

Peacefully.

Brendan and Samuel there.

I visited day before but left.

At funeral, I attended.

Dad had died previous year maybe. We can address.

General Carter died at eighty one after short illness.

I had grieved deeply.

Samuel spoke at funeral about Grandpa Tom, not four star.

No national myth.

Diane funeral smaller.

Brendan spoke:

“My mother spent first half of her life building systems that made her powerful and second half learning relationships fail when power replaces trust.”

Accurate.

Then I placed no flower? I did.

One white rose.

Not symbolism needed.

Then her estate.

Legitimate remaining assets to Brendan partly and veterans charity under independent governance.

No hidden drive.

No new crime.

Mercer archive long federal evidence.

All legal cases closed.

Continue to the next part: Diane dies after finally giving Cassidy the last piece of truth about how early she began using Brendan’s relationship to monitor her.
