Chapter 4 - The Marriage Question

The idea made me physically sick.

Was Brendan assigned to me?

No.

That sounded paranoid.

Agent Ward agreed.

“We have no evidence anyone arranged your marriage.”

Good.

Then why Diane’s interest?

Maybe she recognized me later.

Not immediately.

My public background after leaving active service was deliberately bland.

Security consulting.

Project management.

No military biography.

My father’s relationship omitted from media wherever possible because of my former case.

Brendan met me at a charity 10K.

Normal.

He flirted.

We dated.

Married eighteen months later.

Could Diane have discovered after?

Yes.

Then old photographs.

At our engagement party, Diane stared at my necklace.

Army service medallion.

I said family piece.

She asked:

“Carter?”

The engraving included C.C.

No.

Then she hired a private investigator? Possibly.

Federal warrant recovered a background report from her study.

On me.

Date:

Three months after wedding.

It identified military service partially.

Rank withheld.

Father suspected:

Thomas Carter.

Then handwritten:

Confirm Lattice?

My stomach turned.

She had known for years.

Maybe not before marriage.

After.

Then why keep me close?

Because I could reveal whether case remained active.

She asked questions.

Watched.

Brendan likely unknowingly acted as conduit.

Ward found texts.

DIANE:

Does Cassidy ever talk about her old work?

BRENDAN:

No. She acts like she was filing paperwork for government.

DIANE:

Ask about Nevada.

BRENDAN:

Why?

DIANE:

I have business there.

Then Brendan later:

She said no.

Diane:

What about Fort Belvoir?

Brendan:

Mom, this is weird.

Diane:

Humor me.

That meant Brendan participated in probing without understanding.

Still.

Then another text.

After our first marital fight:

BRENDAN:

She keeps locked case in closet.

DIANE:

What kind?

BRENDAN:

Military green.

DIANE:

Get a picture.

He did.

A photo.

My old footlocker.

Nothing classified inside.

Diane replied:

Wrong one.

Wrong one.

She was looking for something.

Then my notebook.

The green military notebook Brendan once asked about.

It had existed.

Not classified documents.

A personal field notebook from training and logistical observations, scrubbed before I retained anything.

But one page included hand drawn flowchart from Operation Lattice? No, I would not legally keep classified. Better I had a permitted declassified commendation folder? Hmm.

Diane may believe I kept a "green notebook" because Charles told her Cassidy had it? Could be false.

Where would she get idea?

From Orchard.

If Charles was Orchard, he may have known Captain Carter from case indirectly.

Then Ward discovered a recovered email from Charles to Diane seven years earlier.

Subject:

CARTER GIRL.

Body:

If she ever surfaces, find out what she remembers about MTF.

MTF.

Mercer Tactical Freight.

Photo attachment blurred.

Me.

In uniform.

I stared.

This was before I met Brendan.

Did Charles know me personally?

No.

I had interviewed one supplier connected to him without knowing.

Maybe surveillance captured me.

Then two years later Brendan met me by chance.

Diane eventually recognized.

That was plausible.

She did not arrange meeting.

She exploited coincidence.

Then marriage became information opportunity.

Diane never told Brendan why.

She encouraged marriage despite thinking I was poor.

Interesting.

Maybe that was why she tolerated me despite class insults.

She wanted me close.

Then after Charles died, Diane inherited Mercer archive and network.

She still wanted to know what I remembered.

Then divorce threatened access.

Pregnancy created another tether.

The final dinner?

Maybe partly to humiliate.

Maybe to search my purse/phone.

Ward found security camera from mansion dining room.

Before I arrived, Jessica asked:

“When she goes to bathroom, what am I looking for?”

Diane:

“Her phone. Any red secure app.”

My heart stopped.

They knew.

How?

Diane had seen an emergency icon once during marriage perhaps.

Then Jessica:

“What if she never leaves table?”

Diane:

“Brendan will upset her.”

Then bucket.

Was filthy water partly a distraction to get me to leave purse?

My purse remained near chair.

Jessica reached toward it once while I was doubled over.

Security footage caught.

Then I grabbed phone myself.

Their plan failed.

The humiliation was not only cruelty.

It was tactic.

Brendan knew?

His messages showed Diane told him only:

“Keep Cassidy in dining room until she leaves angry.”

He thought mother wanted final dominance.

He did not know phone search.

Still assisted harassment.

Then Ward asked:

“Do you remember the red app being visible around Diane before?”

Once.

During divorce mediation, secure phone lit.

Diane noticed.

“What’s that?”

I said work alert.

She watched.

Then Jessica.

Why involve?

Money.

Diane paid Jessica’s apartment.

Designer clothes.

Trips.

Jessica liked power.

Was she part of national security network?

No evidence.

She was recruited for access.

Then prosecutor? Not yet.

Ward said:

“Cassidy, this case is no longer about your old operation alone.”

“What is it about?”

“Who continued Mercer Tactical Freight’s network after Charles died.”

I looked at Diane’s voicemail transcript.

“And you think Diane did.”

Ward’s face stayed neutral.

“We think she knows.”

Then my attorney called.

Family court.

Brendan had filed emergency petition asking for access to unborn child after birth, claiming I was “militarizing a domestic dispute.”

I almost laughed.

The man who dragged a pregnant woman across a floor now wanted to call me dangerous because aircraft happened to arrive.

Fine.

May you like

We would answer in court.

Continue to the next part: Security footage shows the bucket attack was also meant to distract Cassidy while Jessica searched for her secure phone.
