Chapter 9 - The Week My Father Became the Distraction

The timeline finally gave the scandal a second purpose.

Daniel’s supposed theft became public on Monday.

News coverage exploded Tuesday.

His employer suspended him Wednesday.

Creditors froze accounts Thursday.

On Friday, a lien renewal carrying Sebastian Blackwood’s impossible signature was filed against the Chicago estate.

Nobody noticed.

Blackwood finance teams were busy responding to the Dawson scandal.

Board members were demanding internal investigations.

Sebastian was already dead.

Ronan had not yet taken full control.

Gregory Sloane served as interim board chairman.

Marcus Vale supervised the investigation.

Arthur Hale’s lawyers filed the renewal.

Everyone who might question the property record was looking somewhere else.

At Dad.

Ruth requested the underlying filing package.

The county retained scanned originals.

One cover letter came from Hale Capital.

One internal acknowledgment came from Blackwood.

Signer:

Marcus Vale.

Another page said board chair notified.

No response required.

Sloane argued he never saw it.

Email archives showed Marcus sent notification to an address Gregory stopped using months earlier.

Technically sent.

Practically hidden.

Distributed guilt again.

Marcus understood process well enough to create a trail without creating awareness.

Arthur benefited.

Vivien later inherited the strategy.

The current Continuity Agreement required two things.

A valid old Hale obligation.

Marriage to a Hale family representative.

The fake lien supplied the first.

Vivien supplied the second.

Once the wedding occurred, Hale lawyers could announce the inherited default.

Blackwood shares would enter temporary restructuring.

Vivien’s side letter would give her family voting proxy.

The estate itself could become additional leverage.

Ronan did not need to die.

He did not need to disappear.

They planned to trap him inside documents carrying his own signature.

A cleaner takeover than violence.

The whipping in the ballroom was not part of the financial plan.

It was Vivien’s cruelty colliding with pressure.

Yet it exposed everything because she lost control in front of the wrong witness.

Me.

That realization did not make me feel chosen.

Dad had spent years being destroyed because he knew too much.

I did not want a destiny inside Blackwood’s problems.

I wanted the truth attached to my father’s name.

Nothing more.

Ronan seemed to understand.

“You are free to walk away.”

“Not until I know who sent the cropped bank statement.”

“That is separate from your father.”

“No. Someone still wants me to doubt him.”

Ruth agreed.

“And whoever sent it knows current investigation details.”

Information from inside our small review group had leaked.

Only a handful of people knew we were examining Daniel’s account that night.

Ronan.

Ruth.

Me.

Outside forensic auditors.

Gregory Sloane.

Security director Nathan Cole.

Board counsel.

One of them or their systems was compromised.

We did not accuse anyone.

We changed communication channels.

The leak stopped for twelve hours.

Then Vivien made a public statement.

She claimed she had ended the engagement after discovering Ronan concealed historic Blackwood fraud.

She said the documents at the gala proved his family owed Hale Capital tens of millions.

She did not mention the whip.

She described our confrontation as an unfortunate disagreement with staff.

Video existed.

Guests existed.

Her attempt to shrink the violence told me she still believed status could edit memory.

Ronan released nothing personally.

Ruth issued one narrow statement.

An independent audit is underway regarding historical financing documents. No conclusion has been reached.

That irritated Vivien more than public fighting would have.

Then Arthur Hale filed a formal demand.

Eighty six million dollars.

Secured lien against Chicago estate.

Notice of voting rights dispute.

He activated the weapon early.

Before the wedding.

Why?

Because the documents were already exposed.

If the marriage trigger disappeared, Hale could still litigate the debt and create chaos.

Their clean takeover had failed.

Now they would use the old claim directly.

The court scheduled an emergency hearing on the estate lien.

Ruth needed the original release.

We had the video.

We had a scanned copy.

Where was the physical signed document?

Daniel’s flash drive referenced:

Original filed in BLACKWOOD HOUSE ARCHIVE.

Ronan frowned.

“There is no house archive.”

“Your father thought there was.”

We searched Sebastian’s estate plans.

One blueprint marked a fire safe behind the west ballroom fireplace.

The same fireplace Vivien ran toward with the loose document.

She was not trying to burn a random page.

She knew something was stored there.

Security removed the decorative panel under legal observation.

A narrow safe sat inside.

Empty.

Someone had opened it recently.

Camera footage from the gala preparation showed Vivien entering the ballroom alone two hours before guests arrived.

She disappeared near the fireplace for six minutes.

When she walked away, a flat document case was hidden beneath her gold shawl.

Vivien had taken whatever Sebastian stored there before attacking me.

But another figure entered ten minutes later.

Gregory Sloane.

He knelt beside the banquet table.

And slid the black folder underneath it.

The folder I found during the whipping had not been forgotten.

The chairman planted it where someone would discover it.

Continue to the next part: Gregory Sloane admits he deliberately placed the black folder under Vivien’s table before the gala began.
