Chapter 6 - The Letter Ronan Never Received

I found the courier box in my memory before I found it in the storage inventory.
Brown cardboard.
Black tape.
No return label.
It had arrived while I was dealing with funeral bills and collection calls.
I opened the top.
Saw Dad’s red binder.
Closed it again.
I assumed one of his former clients returned property.
The original box had been discarded years ago.
But my sister took photographs while helping sort Dad’s apartment.
One showed the open parcel.
Inside the red binder lay a narrow empty space shaped like a flash drive case.
Another photograph showed the shipping label folded inside.
Partial tracking numbers matched the package delivered to Sloane’s office.
The parcel had gone from Dad to Blackwood.
Then back to Dad’s home after his death.
Someone removed the flash drive and letter.
Vivien took the binder from my storage because she believed the missing material might still be inside.
It was not.
Where were they?
Ruth searched Marcus Vale’s company office after the board suspended his access.
Company counsel supervised.
The office looked clean.
Too clean.
Desk drawers empty.
Files removed.
One locked cabinet remained.
Inside were copies of old MARBLE documents and a list of twelve shell companies.
At the bottom:
DAWSON ESCROW DISTRIBUTION.
Twenty eight million dollars had not gone into Daniel’s pocket.
The escrow paid twelve entities.
Some were employee injury funds.
Some were port vendors.
Some were insurance claim reserves.
Daniel had followed Sebastian’s instructions to quarantine disputed Hale repayments and ensure legitimate obligations were paid while the larger reconciliation continued.
Marcus later rewrote those distributions as theft.
One entity stood out.
Blackwood Employee Restitution Trust.
Initial transfer:
Eleven million dollars.
Current status:
Dormant.
The trust had been created after workers lost pensions during the expansion crisis.
Sebastian and Daniel intended to restore money if the company recovered.
No public announcement was made because Sebastian feared admitting the pension shortfall.
Another secret created another vulnerability.
The restitution trust should now hold far more than eleven million after investments.
Ruth searched the account.
Balance:
Zero.
The funds had been moved forty eight hours before the gala.
Destination:
Hale Meridian Strategic Fund.
Vivien’s family.
Ronan’s face became unreadable.
The takeover was not only future tense.
Money had already moved.
Authorization appeared to come from Blackwood Logistics.
Signer:
Ronan Blackwood.
He had not signed it.
Second authorization:
Marcus Vale.
Third:
Gregory Sloane.
Sloane stared at the page.
“That is not my signature.”
Ruth checked digital certificates.
Both signatures were valid cryptographically.
Someone had used authentic signing credentials.
The same problem as the Continuity Agreement.
Ronan’s signature had been captured legitimately somewhere else, then reused through a compromised digital system.
Vivien’s engagement planning gave her unusual access to his calendar, devices, and private signing sessions.
We reviewed recent documents.
Three weeks earlier, Ronan signed venue, insurance, and charitable pledge documents on a tablet provided by Vivien’s event office.
The signing certificate synced through a temporary application.
That application belonged to Hale Meridian Technology.
Ruth closed her eyes.
“They harvested your certificate.”
Not a copied image.
A valid authentication token.
That was how the forged pages could survive routine review.
Vivien’s family had not relied on bad handwriting.
They built documents designed to pass modern systems.
Sloane’s credential issue could work the same way.
He attended a joint board retreat using the same Hale tablet system.
Marcus did too.
All three signing certificates were exposed.
I returned to Dad’s notebook.
One phrase appeared beside HALE SYSTEMS.
SIGNATURE IS NOT CONSENT.
He had predicted that too.
The missing flash drive likely contained technical evidence.
Ronan looked at me.
“Where would your father keep a duplicate?”
“Bank.”
“Why?”
“He never trusted one copy.”
That was something I remembered from childhood.
Tax returns existed in three places.
Insurance documents had copies.
He told me redundancy was the difference between evidence and memory.
I searched my own records.
Dad left one safe deposit key.
I had never opened the box after his death because the bank said it contained professional material that might be subject to creditor claims.
The bankruptcy trustee eventually released all personal claims.
I still never returned.
Ruth arranged lawful access.
The box contained a sealed envelope.
Ronan Blackwood.
Dad had prepared a duplicate letter.
A flash drive sat beneath it.
I handed the letter to Ronan.
It was addressed to him.
He opened it.
Ronan,
If this reaches you, Gregory did not stop it and Marcus did not destroy it.
Your father made a dishonest decision. Arthur Hale turned it into a permanent weapon. Marcus learned how to monetize the lie. Gregory learned how not to look.
Do not clear my name by hiding Sebastian’s part.
Truth that protects only the powerful is another audit fraud.
The final paragraph concerned me.
My daughter Claire knows nothing about this. Keep her out unless someone brings the problem to her door.
Ronan stopped reading.
Vivien had done exactly that.
She brought me into the estate.
Searched my locker.
Burned through my father’s privacy.
And raised a whip over me in a ballroom containing the documents he died trying to expose.
The flash drive opened with one folder.
MARBLE ORIGINAL.
Another.
HALE TOKEN CAPTURE.
And one video.
Sebastian Blackwood sat beside Daniel Dawson.
Arthur Hale stood across from them.
The date was twelve years earlier.
Arthur signed a document.
Ruth zoomed in.
FULL SATISFACTION AND RELEASE OF SECURITY INTEREST.
Arthur Hale had personally acknowledged the Blackwood debt was paid.
