Chapter 14 - The Partnership That Was Never Supposed to Survive

Vivien contacted Ruth before police found her.
She wanted protection.
Not forgiveness.
Not reunion.
Protection.
Marcus had called her after the gala.
He told her Arthur planned to blame her for the failed takeover.
He showed her the fabricated messages in VIVIEN EXIT.
Then he offered a deal.
Help him retrieve the Continuity binder.
He would provide evidence separating her actual conduct from the crimes he intended to place on her.
She agreed.
Again, self preservation.
Not conscience.
“What did you do with the binder?” Ruth asked during the recorded meeting.
“Marcus has it.”
“Where is he?”
“I do not know.”
“You left the estate together.”
“He changed cars near Lincoln Park.”
“Why did you go back inside?”
“He said the binder could prove my father designed the entire structure.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Was that why you burned the lien release?”
Vivien stopped.
Her lawyer whispered.
She answered.
“I burned what my father told me to destroy.”
“Did you know it was the original debt release?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know the debt had been satisfied?”
“I knew there was a dispute.”
“You knew enough to destroy the document.”
“Yes.”
There was the line.
Vivien participated knowingly in evidence destruction tied to the false debt.
She also stole Daniel’s binder.
Arranged my placement.
Accessed my storage information.
Used the Continuity Agreement.
And whipped me in public.
Marcus later exploiting her did not erase any of it.
“What was in the binder?” Ronan asked.
Vivien looked at him.
“Your father’s emergency succession rules.”
“Who succeeds Gregory?”
“Daniel Dawson.”
I felt my heartbeat change.
“Dad?”
“Not as owner.”
Ruth understood first.
“As independent auditor.”
Vivien nodded.
Sebastian did not trust another Blackwood family member with the crisis.
He did not trust Hale.
He did not fully trust Sloane.
So the Continuity mechanism assigned Daniel authority to validate disputed financial records if both sides became compromised.
Daniel’s role was not corporate controller.
It was gatekeeper.
No restructuring could become permanent without his audit certification.
Dad’s disgrace made the clause unusable.
That gave Marcus another reason to destroy him.
If Daniel remained credible, Marcus could never control Continuity.
“Daniel died,” I said.
Vivien looked at me.
“The binder names a successor.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“I did not see.”
“Marcus did?”
“Yes.”
That was why he stole the binder.
The successor auditor could block him now.
Who had Daniel chosen?
Ruth checked old Continuity references.
The successor had to be independent.
Financially trained.
Not a Blackwood or Hale beneficiary.
Named personally by Daniel.
My father knew very few people fitting that description.
I did not want the obvious answer to be me.
At the time the binder was signed, I was twenty one.
Still studying accounting.
He might have named a colleague.
Professor.
Partner.
We needed the document.
Vivien provided Marcus’s temporary phone number.
Authorities traced it to a hotel near O’Hare.
The room was empty.
Trash contained shredded copies of the Continuity binder.
Not the original.
Forensic reconstruction produced several lines.
SUCCESSOR AUDITOR SHALL BE DESIGNATED BY D D UNDER SEALED INSTRUCTION.
Not the name.
Marcus had removed that page.
Another fragment:
NO SUCCESSOR MAY HOLD BLACKWOOD OR HALE EQUITY.
Another:
VALIDATION REQUIRES ORIGINAL MARBLE LEDGER.
The original MARBLE ledger was Dad’s red binder.
We had it.
That meant the successor auditor needed the binder to act.
Marcus had stolen the Continuity rules but left the red binder behind at the warehouse.
Maybe he did not know the two worked together.
Or he no longer needed validation if he could destroy the successor page.
Then Ruth received a courier delivery.
No sender.
One envelope.
Inside:
The missing successor page.
Marcus had mailed it.
Why?
A note explained.
RONAN,
I COULD HAVE DESTROYED THIS.
I DID NOT.
ASK GREGORY WHY DANIEL NEVER TRUSTED HIM ENOUGH TO NAME HIM.
M V.
Marcus was still manipulating the room from outside it.
The successor name remained covered by a tamper seal.
Ruth opened it under recording.
My name appeared.
CLAIRE DAWSON.
I stared at the page.
Dad had named me thirteen years earlier.
I was twenty eight.
Recently licensed.
Working at a regional forensic accounting firm before his scandal destroyed both our careers.
The instruction read:
Claire is not to be informed unless MARBLE becomes active again and both families dispute control. She may refuse without consequence.
The last sentence mattered more than the name.
I may refuse.
Dad had given me a choice even inside his emergency plan.
Ronan looked at me.
“I will not ask tonight.”
“Good.”
Vivien laughed softly.
We turned.
“What?”
She looked toward the page.
“You still do not understand.”
“What?”
“Marcus did not mail that because he respects Daniel’s choice.”
“Then why?”
“Because the moment Claire is formally identified as successor auditor, Continuity becomes active.”
Ruth checked the clause.
Vivien was right.
Identification of the successor plus active Hale litigation and disputed Blackwood signatures satisfied two automatic conditions.
Only one remained.
Board operational risk certification.
Gregory Sloane.
If he signed, I would become the independent auditor holding authority to validate or block the restructuring.
Marcus knew exactly what he was doing.
May you like
He had placed me into the center.
Continue to the next part: Marcus sends the one page that can activate Claire’s hidden role inside Blackwood’s emergency governance system.
