Chapter 15 - The Audit My Father Left Unfinished

I refused the role the first time Ruth explained it.

“No.”

Nobody argued.

That mattered.

Ronan did not tell me my father would want it.

Ruth did not tell me the company needed me.

Sloane did not invoke duty.

The document itself said I could refuse without consequence.

So I did.

For twelve hours.

Then I read Dad’s sealed instruction completely.

Claire,

If you are seeing this, then I failed to finish MARBLE.

Do not take this role because of me.

Take it only if refusing would leave the truth dependent on people who benefit from hiding it.

You owe Blackwood nothing.

You owe Hale nothing.

You owe my reputation nothing.

Audit the records only if you still believe records should mean the same thing no matter whose name sits above them.

I hated how well he knew me.

I also hated that he had protected my choice better than almost every powerful person around him protected their own children.

I accepted one condition.

The audit would not be controlled by Ronan, Sloane, Blackwood counsel, or Hale counsel.

An independent accounting firm would lead.

I would serve as successor reviewer under Daniel’s instruction.

All findings involving my father would receive additional outside verification because I had an obvious personal interest.

Ruth agreed.

Ronan agreed.

Sloane agreed.

Arthur Hale challenged the appointment immediately.

Vivien’s lawyers challenged it too.

Marcus remained missing.

The emergency court allowed a limited independent audit while ownership litigation continued.

No one handed me a billionaire empire.

No one made the maid suddenly powerful because of a secret inheritance.

I had one narrow job.

Validate the numbers.

Dad’s red binder became the starting point.

The legitimate Hale debt had been repaid.

Arthur’s release supported that.

The later lien renewals appeared fraudulent.

The employee restitution fund had been diverted.

Vivien and Arthur participated in the current Continuity strategy.

Marcus helped build it, then created parallel structures designed to profit from the crisis.

Sloane failed repeatedly through fear and institutional loyalty, then finally warned Ronan through the planted folder.

Sebastian Blackwood created the original false statement and later tried to undo the damage without publicly admitting his role.

Nobody came out clean.

That made the audit stronger.

It did not exist to produce heroes.

Ronan asked the board to release a preliminary historical correction regarding Daniel Dawson.

The independent auditors refused.

“Not yet.”

I supported them.

My father deserved more than a flattering statement rushed out because Ronan felt guilty.

We authenticated the escrow.

The North Pier reserve.

The restitution trust.

The forged audit report.

The metadata changes.

Weeks later, the outside firm issued its first conclusion.

There was no evidence Daniel personally stole the twenty eight million dollars attributed to him.

Substantial evidence showed he administered disputed Blackwood funds under instructions from Sebastian and later became the subject of materially misleading internal reports.

I read the sentence alone.

Not exonerated by love.

Not cleared because I wanted him cleared.

Evidence.

I cried anyway.

The creditors tied to Dad’s old professional claims reopened settlements.

Some debts would remain.

Some might be reversed.

Money could not restore his years.

Truth did not travel backward.

It only stopped the lie from moving forward uncontested.

Vivien’s public image collapsed after authenticated gala footage emerged through legal proceedings.

The video showed the shove.

The whip.

The attempt to destroy documents.

Her lawyers argued context.

The physical assault case remained separate from the corporate investigation.

No final criminal outcome had been reached.

Arthur Hale continued fighting the debt release in court.

Marcus remained wanted for questioning in multiple financial investigations.

Sloane stayed chairman temporarily but announced he would step down after independent transition.

He did not ask to be praised for eventually doing what he should have done years earlier.

Ronan suspended every Hale connected digital signing platform.

Blackwood created new authentication controls.

The employee restitution fund was frozen and placed under independent trustees while missing money was traced.

I returned to work at the estate only once.

Not as a maid.

To collect my belongings.

My uniform hung inside the staff locker.

Black dress.

White apron.

Sleeve repaired where the whip had split it.

The housekeeper offered to throw it away.

“No.”

I folded it.

Not because I planned to wear it again.

Because the uniform had never made me harmless.

Vivien had simply mistaken service for surrender.

Ronan met me near the ballroom.

The fireplace had been cleaned.

No engagement decorations remained.

“You are leaving.”

“Yes.”

“You could stay with the audit team.”

“I am staying with the audit.”

He looked confused.

“Just not here.”

I had accepted a temporary position with the independent firm helping review MARBLE.

My old forensic accounting career did not magically return because a billionaire noticed me.

I still had years outside the profession.

A damaged résumé.

A famous surname for all the wrong reasons.

But someone finally evaluated my work instead of my father’s headline.

That was enough.

Ronan nodded.

“Then I suppose I will see you across conference tables.”

“Probably.”

A faint smile.

Nothing more.

He was still untangling an engagement built partly as a takeover.

I was still untang
