Chapter 13 - Marcus Came Back to the Estate

The Blackwood estate contained service tunnels older than Ronan.

Wine storage.

Heating access.

Staff corridors.

Emergency utility routes.

A property this large had too many ways to disappear without leaving through the front door.

Marcus knew them.

He had worked for Blackwood for twenty three years.

Security logs showed his old executive badge entering the underground garage at five twelve the morning after the gala.

The credential should have been disabled.

Someone reactivated it.

Ronan’s security director, Nathan Cole, checked the system.

Reactivation request came from Ronan’s account.

False token again.

The digital signature problem had infected physical access.

The estate was locked down room by room.

Not dramatically.

No guests remained.

Staff were evacuated from affected areas.

Police handled the search because Marcus was now connected to suspected financial crimes and unauthorized access.

I stayed in the library with Ruth.

Ronan wanted me away from the service corridors.

For once, I agreed.

My job was documents.

Not chasing a missing chief financial officer through tunnels.

Security found Marcus’s coat near the old wine cellar.

Then a laptop.

Unlocked.

Too convenient.

Ruth refused to touch it until forensic staff arrived.

The screen showed a scheduled email.

Recipient:

Arthur Hale.

Subject:

YOU LOSE IF YOU FILE.

Body:

The eighty six million is already in Ronan’s trust. Withdraw the claim or both families go down.

Marcus was blackmailing Arthur.

Not serving him.

Another draft to Sloane:

Sign the continuity certificate or Hale receives Daniel’s complete archive.

Another to Ronan:

Remove Gregory and I will return the employee trust.

Marcus had built leverage against all sides.

He wanted a seat that did not officially exist.

Ruth searched corporate bylaws.

The Continuity Council allowed the temporary chair to appoint a financial administrator during crisis.

Marcus had positioned himself for that role.

Once appointed, he could control restructuring while Sloane carried public responsibility.

That was his endgame.

Not ownership through shares.

Control through crisis.

Dad’s phrase became clear.

M12 equals control after truth.

Marcus understood that once the historical truth emerged, Blackwood and Hale would weaken simultaneously.

He planned to become indispensable during cleanup.

The laptop also contained one unexpected file.

VIVIEN EXIT.

Marcus had prepared evidence blaming Vivien for the full current scheme.

Some of it was real.

Her staffing request.

The stolen binder.

Continuity emails.

Some was fabricated.

A transfer authorization she never sent.

A message instructing Marcus to create Blackwood Domestic Trust.

Metadata showed Marcus authored it himself.

Vivien was both conspirator and future scapegoat.

I did not feel sympathy.

I felt clarity.

Participation in one fraud does not make someone guilty of every fraud.

That principle mattered even for her.

The search team found a hidden door behind wine racks.

Marcus had entered an old document room.

He was no longer there.

A second exit led toward the ballroom fireplace.

That was why his vehicle remained.

He moved through the estate internally.

What was he looking for?

The original release had been burned.

The safe was empty.

The folder already exposed.

Then I remembered Dad’s flash drive.

Sebastian private.

We had opened only some files.

One referenced:

HOUSE COPY NOT RELEASE.

The physical release was not Sebastian’s only archive inside the estate.

Ruth opened the file.

Daniel wrote:

Sebastian kept board ledger separate from Hale papers. Location known only to G S.

Gregory.

We called Sloane.

He knew.

“Behind the north staircase.”

Ronan stared at him.

“You have waited this entire time to mention another archive?”

“It contains founder level board misconduct.”

“That is no longer a reason.”

Sloane led police to a concealed wall compartment.

The lock had been forced recently.

Inside were board ledgers.

Original minutes.

Private notes.

One binder missing.

Continuity Council.

Marcus had come back for it.

Sloane looked horrified.

“That binder contains the only signed copy.”

“Signed by whom?” Ruth asked.

“Me.”

“And?”

Sloane swallowed.

“Sebastian.”

Ronan’s father had approved the Continuity Council before his death.

Earlier than Sloane admitted.

That changed everything.

The emergency governance mechanism was not merely a draft after Sebastian’s death.

Sebastian himself helped create it.

Ruth searched the remaining ledger.

One entry:

Continuity authority intended only if Hale and Blackwood leadership compromised by MARBLE disclosure.

Temporary controller must be independent of both families.

Sloane qualified.

Marcus did not.

Then another note from Sebastian:

If Gregory refuses, Daniel names successor auditor.

My father had authority inside the structure.

Ronan looked at me.

“Did Daniel name anyone?”

The missing binder might contain the answer.

Marcus now possessed it.

Police reached the ballroom passage.

A rear service door stood open.

Marcus had escaped outside.

Security cameras captured a dark vehicle leaving the estate.

Driver not visible.

Passenger visible for one second.

Vivien Hale.

She and Marcus were together.

Continue to the next part: Vivien, who Marcus planned to frame, is caught leaving the Blackwood estate with him after the hidden Continuity binder disappears.
