Chapter 8 - The Account with My Father’s Name

I wanted the statement to be fake.

That was the first thing I had to admit.

The entire week had trained me to distrust convenient documents.

This one was convenient in the opposite direction.

It damaged Dad.

Account:

DANIEL DAWSON SPECIAL HOLDINGS.

Opening balance:

Twenty eight million dollars.

Created twelve years earlier.

My father’s tax identification number appeared.

His signature.

His address.

Ruth sent it to the outside forensic team.

The bank confirmed the account had existed.

My stomach dropped.

Ronan did not rush to defend Daniel.

Good.

I would not have believed him if he did.

“We trace it,” he said.

That was all.

The bank’s archived file told a more complicated story.

Account title included Daniel’s name because he served as escrow administrator.

Legal ownership line:

Dawson Reconciliation Escrow, fiduciary account.

Beneficial interest:

Blackwood Logistics disputed obligations.

The screenshot sent to me had cropped those lines.

Someone deliberately made a trust account look personal.

Dad controlled transfer authority.

That meant he carried responsibility for where the money went.

It did not mean he owned it.

We traced every outgoing payment.

Most matched the binder.

Employee claims.

Vendor disputes.

Insurance reserves.

Then one transfer did not.

Four million dollars moved to North Pier Consulting.

Authorization:

Daniel Dawson.

North Pier later transferred funds to a personal brokerage account.

Beneficiary:

Daniel Dawson.

This was worse.

Ruth looked at me.

“We do not interpret yet.”

“I know.”

My throat felt tight.

“Trace the brokerage.”

The account opened under Dad’s identity.

Photograph:

Dad.

Signature:

Dad.

Mailing address:

A Chicago apartment he never lived in.

Phone:

Unknown.

Login IP:

Blackwood corporate network.

Dad could have used company computers.

Or someone inside Blackwood created the account.

The account purchased conservative bonds.

No money was withdrawn for personal use.

Six months later, the full balance plus interest transferred back into the employee restitution trust.

If Dad had been stealing, he returned every dollar before anyone accused him.

Why move it at all?

The flash drive answered.

An audio note from Daniel.

“North Pier account established because Sebastian refuses public employee trust while Hale reconciliation remains open. Temporary reserve must remain beyond Hale attachment. Account bears my name because Sebastian will not place Blackwood on instrument.”

Dad had agreed to a terrible structure.

He put company money in an account using his identity because Sebastian wanted it hidden from Hale.

That decision made him vulnerable.

It also looked exactly like theft from the outside.

“Why would he do that?” I whispered.

Ronan answered.

“Because my father asked him to.”

The next audio contained Sebastian.

“If Hale sees the restitution reserve, Arthur will seize it under the old covenant.”

Daniel:

“Then file the release.”

Sebastian:

“Not until I know Arthur cannot expose the first financing statement.”

Daniel:

“You want me to hold employee money in my name to protect your reputation.”

Sebastian:

“Temporarily.”

Daniel:

“If this becomes public, I look like a thief.”

Sebastian:

“I will clear it.”

He never did.

Sebastian died before Daniel’s reputation recovered.

The company preserved the theft narrative because admitting the truth would expose its founder.

Ronan sat alone for several minutes after hearing that.

“My father promised to clear him.”

“He did not.”

“No.”

“I spent years paying debts because people believed Dad stole.”

“I know.”

“You did not cause that.”

“No.”

“But your company benefited.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Again, that mattered.

The board initiated an independent historical review.

Not a press release declaring Dad innocent overnight.

Records needed authentication.

Creditors.

Old regulators.

Employee trust administrators.

The truth would move slowly because the lie had been institutional for twelve years.

I could accept slow.

I could not accept silence anymore.

The anonymous text sender had cropped the statement.

Who had it?

Marcus.

Arthur.

Vivien.

Sloane.

Someone else.

Cyber tracing led through disposable services.

No answer.

Then another message arrived.

ASK RONAN WHO OWNS THE ESTATE IF THE RELEASE IS REAL.

I showed him.

Ruth searched the original financing.

The Chicago estate had been collateral.

Arthur’s release should have freed it.

County property records showed the lien was canceled twelve years earlier.

Then renewed six years later.

Signature:

Sebastian Blackwood.

Impossible.

Sebastian had been dead for two years when the renewal was filed.

A dead man’s signature had revived Hale’s claim against Ronan’s home.

The forged renewal listed a witness.

Marcus Vale.

Notary:

Gregory Sloane.

Sloane stared at the document.

“I have never been a notary.”

The seal used his name anyway.

The fraud had been designed years ago to implicate everyone necessary.

Then Ruth checked the filing date.

It was the same week Daniel Dawson’s reputation collapsed publicly.

While my father was being called a thief, someone had used the distraction to resurrect the lien on Blackwood’s estate.

Continue to the next part: The scandal that destroyed Daniel’s name may have been created partly to hide the moment someone secretly revived Hale’s claim against Ronan’s estate.
