Chapter 12 - The Same Trap Twice

The pattern was almost identical.

Daniel Dawson Special Holdings.

Blackwood Domestic Trust.

Both used the target’s name.

Both held disputed company money.

Both could later be presented as proof that the target personally controlled hidden funds.

Marcus had learned from the first frame.

This time, the structure was cleaner.

Blackwood Domestic Trust was formed in Delaware two months earlier.

Trustee:

Ronan Blackwood.

Protector:

Gregory Sloane.

Investment adviser:

Marcus Vale.

Beneficiary:

Blackwood Family Continuity Foundation.

None of the three men had knowingly approved it.

Formation documents used authentic digital certificates captured through Hale systems.

The eighty six million dollars moved from Hale Meridian into the trust the night of the gala.

Why would Hale send money equal to the debt it claimed Blackwood owed?

Ruth answered slowly.

“To make repayment appear to come from somewhere else later.”

I understood.

“If Blackwood pays Hale eighty six million, the trust can send the same amount back into a Ronan controlled account.”

“Exactly.”

Then someone can say Ronan stole the payment.

The debt dispute becomes criminal suspicion.

Board confidence collapses.

Continuity Council activates.

Sloane becomes temporary chair.

Marcus controls the financial information.

Every branch served the same crisis.

Arthur may have believed he was seizing Blackwood.

Vivien may have believed marriage gave her family control.

Sloane believed emergency governance protected the company.

Marcus could be using all of them to place himself behind whoever remained standing.

“Where is the eighty six million now?”

Still inside the trust.

Frozen after Ruth contacted the institution.

The money had not moved again.

That gave us time.

Marcus remained missing.

Arthur denied knowing the trust existed.

Vivien denied it too.

Could they be telling the truth about this piece?

Possibly.

Their own wrongdoing did not mean they authored every layer.

The investigation needed to separate alliances.

Ruth created a timeline.

Arthur and Sebastian created original false financing.

Daniel exposed overbilling.

Sebastian and Daniel created escrow.

Marcus manipulated escrow narrative and framed Daniel.

Sloane blocked Daniel’s warning through negligence and fear.

Years later, Marcus maintained false lien.

Vivien and Arthur planned to use lien plus marriage to gain proxy control.

Marcus assisted.

Then Marcus built Blackwood Domestic Trust and false Sloane accounts, creating evidence that could destroy both Hale and Blackwood positions.

His endgame appeared independent.

Claire’s role entered six months ago.

Vivien hired me to locate Daniel’s surviving evidence.

Marcus supported the placement.

Sloane allowed it.

Then Sloane received anonymous encouragement to plant Vivien’s folder.

Likely Marcus.

My father’s daughter became the match inside a room already filled with fuel.

Ronan looked at me.

“You can leave.”

“You said that before.”

“I mean it more now.”

“Why?”

“Because Marcus is actively using names as weapons. Yours could be next.”

“It already was.”

He understood.

I had spent years living under Dad’s name as if it were a warning label.

I would not let another powerful man tell me safety meant stepping away from the truth.

“I stay until Daniel’s audit is complete.”

“Not for Blackwood.”

“For him.”

Ronan nodded.

That boundary remained.

No romance.

No strange billionaire rescue.

Two people with different reasons to finish the same audit.

The outside forensic team traced Blackwood Domestic Trust’s setup fees.

Paid by a law firm.

Vale Mercer Legal.

Marcus’s brother owned it.

He claimed no knowledge.

The actual wire came from a prepaid corporate account funded by ML Twelve Holdings.

M L.

Marble Twelve.

Marcus had turned Dad’s label into his private network.

Company records showed ML Twelve Holdings owned a warehouse near the Chicago River.

Ruth notified authorities.

The warehouse search produced servers.

Paper records.

A secure communications terminal.

No Marcus.

One wall contained framed newspaper articles.

Daniel’s scandal.

Sebastian’s death.

Ronan’s appointment.

Ronan and Vivien’s engagement.

My employment profile.

A photograph from the gala.

Marcus had been mapping everyone.

The server contained draft narratives.

If Hale wins:

Arthur exploited fraudulent historic debt.

If Ronan wins:

Blackwood concealed restitution funds.

If Sloane wins:

Board engineered takeover.

If Claire speaks:

Disgraced auditor’s daughter seeking revenge.

Every possible outcome had a story prepared.

Marcus did not only manipulate money.

He manipulated interpretation.

Then investigators found the red binder.

My father’s original reconciliation book.

Vivien had delivered it to Marcus before the gala.

Inside was one page missing from the copy in Dad’s safe deposit box.

A handwritten note.

G S knows enough to stop this.

If he does not, he is either afraid or paid.

Underneath, added later in different ink:

He was afraid.

The second handwriting belonged to Marcus.

Marcus had read Dad’s judgment of Sloane and turned it into leverage.

One final document sat beneath the binder.

A passport.

Marcus Vale.

Departure reservation for that night.

Destination:

Zurich.

But the warehouse camera showed Marcus leaving in the opposite direction.

He never intended to take the flight.

The passport was another prepared story.

Then security recovered his last local vehicle.

Parked beneath the Blackwood estate itself.

Marcus had returned to the place where everything began.

Continue to the next part: Marcus never fled Chicago. His abandoned vehicle is found beneath Ronan’s own estate after the gala.
