Vincent wanted Damien alive.
The realization changed the investigation.
For seven months, everyone assumed the convoy attack had been designed to kill him.
Federal analysts reconstructed the ambush.

Damien’s car was struck but not destroyed.
A medical extraction team reached him before Sebastian’s gunmen.

“Can you remove him as administrator?”

“Yes.”
“Then do it now.”
Damien hesitated.
“The replacement administrator must be selected jointly by both parents after acknowledgment.”
Maren stared at him.
“You already had documents prepared.”
“My attorneys drafted them after the gala.”
“Without asking me.”
“Yes.”
He did not attempt an excuse.
“Who did you select?”
“Agent Torres.”
Maya looked surprised.
“You never asked me either.”

“Then the document is useless.”
Maren almost smiled despite everything.

“Can he take the child?”

Maren looked toward the hospital ceiling.
“Change my name in the system.”
Dr. Chen entered.
“We already created a protected patient identity.”
“Vincent found the last one.”
“This record is offline.”
Damien’s phone rang.
A hospital attorney spoke quickly.
A neonatal guardianship order had been filed in New York.
It claimed Damien and Maren were associated with organized crime and mentally incapable of protecting the child.
The petition named Vincent Hale as temporary guardian of all Rowe trust interests.
The order had not been approved.
The judge requested immediate testimony from the parents.
Then the hospital lights flickered.
A nurse entered carrying medication.
Dr. Chen looked at her.
“I did not call you.”
The woman reached into her pocket.
Maren recognized her from Briarwell.
She had worked in the academy maintenance office and approved every shift.
The woman pulled out the black ring.
