Chapter 4 - THE SISTER BEHIND THE AMBUSH

Maren refused to be used in another exchange.

“You are not bringing me to the chapel.”

Damien stood near the hospital door.

“I was not going to ask.”

“You were going to decide.”

He stopped.

“Yes.”

“Then you have learned nothing.”

The words hurt him.

They were supposed to.

Maren looked toward Agent Torres.

“What does Vincent want from the ring?”

“The trust recognizes physical possession and biometric registration,” Maya said. “The original ring contains Evelyn Rowe’s private seal.”

“Can it transfer shares before the baby is born?”

“No. It can amend the temporary administrator.”

“Vincent wants permanent control.”

“Or Elena does.”

Damien shook his head.

“My sister would never work with him.”

“You believed she was dead for eleven years,” Maren said. “You do not know who she became.”

Damien accepted the correction.

Federal agents prepared a controlled operation at Briarwell’s abandoned chapel.

The building stood beyond the athletic fields inside a wooded section of academy property. It had not been used since a fire damaged the west wall fifteen years earlier.

Maren stayed in a protected hospital room.

Damien carried a duplicate ring fitted with a tracking device.

The original remained with federal evidence.

Before he left, Maren stopped him.

“If Elena tells you something painful, do not let Vincent decide what you do with it.”

Damien looked at her.

“You still think I may become the man he expects.”

“I think anger makes familiar choices feel inevitable.”

He nodded.

“That sounds like you remember me clearly.”

“I remember everything.”

At midnight, Damien entered the old chapel with Agent Torres listening through a concealed microphone.

Broken stained glass reflected moonlight across the floor.

Vincent stood near the ruined altar.

Elena remained beside him.

Gideon Ashford sat in a chair with his hands tied.

Damien looked at his sister.

She had their mother’s eyes.

“You are alive.”

Elena’s expression did not soften.

“So are you.”

“I searched for you.”

“You searched for a body Sebastian allowed you to imagine.”

“Why did you not contact me?”

“Because you inherited the men who killed our mother.”

“I was nineteen.”

“You became their leader.”

“To survive.”

“That is what everyone in our family calls choosing power.”

Vincent smiled faintly.

He wanted the siblings accusing each other.

Damien turned toward him.

“You told Maren I was dead.”

“I moved her beyond the people hunting you.”

“You gave her dental records to create a false death.”

“I gave you time to rebuild.”

“You tried to force her into premature labor.”

Vincent’s face remained calm.

“Chloe became impatient.”

Gideon shouted from the chair.

“He told my daughter Maren planned to expose her family.”

Vincent looked at him.

“You told Chloe the same thing.”

Gideon lowered his eyes.

Neither man had clean hands.

Damien looked toward Elena.

“What did he promise you?”

“Control of the trust.”

“For what?”

“To remove Sebastian permanently.”

“Sebastian is under federal investigation.”

“He still controls judges, companies, and half the Rowe board.”

“So you planned to use my child.”

Elena’s composure fractured.

“I planned to protect the child from being raised inside your empire.”

“Maren was cleaning floors to survive while you watched.”

“I did not know where she was until last month.”

“Vincent did.”

Elena looked toward him.

Something shifted.

Vincent had told her he located Maren only days earlier.

The first fracture appeared in their alliance.

Damien removed the duplicate ring.

“My mother’s death. Tell me.”

Elena looked toward the ruined altar.

Their mother died when a vehicle went off a bridge outside New York.

The official report blamed ice.

Elena had been inside another car behind her.

She saw Vincent’s father, Marcus Hale, strike Evelyn’s vehicle before the bridge.

Sebastian ordered it.

Vincent was seventeen.

He helped hide the damaged car afterward.

Damien stared at him.

“You knew.”

“I knew our fathers were at war.”

“You stood beside me at her funeral.”

“I became useful to you because guilt is easier to survive when the victim trusts you.”

The confession entered the federal recording.

Vincent looked toward the ring.

“Place it on the altar.”

“No.”

Elena moved closer.

“Damien, if Vincent becomes administrator, he can remove Sebastian’s board before the baby is born.”

“And then?”

“The child inherits a legitimate company.”

“Controlled by the man who poisoned Maren’s glove.”

Elena looked at Vincent.

“You said Chloe acted alone.”

“She did.”

“You supplied the compound.”

“I arranged options.”

Her face changed.

Vincent had used her anger exactly as he used Damien’s loyalty.

Gideon struggled against the chair.

“The academy records are beneath the altar. He wants to burn them.”

Agent Torres heard the statement.

Federal teams moved toward the chapel.

Vincent drew a pistol.

He pointed it at Gideon.

“Place the ring down.”

Damien did not move.

“If you kill him, Ashford’s testimony disappears.”

“That is the point.”

Elena stepped between the weapon and Gideon.

Vincent stared at her.

“You wanted justice.”

“I wanted the truth.”

“Truth without power is a confession nobody fears.”

She looked toward Damien.

For eleven years, both siblings had allowed powerful men to define survival for them.

Elena struck Vincent’s wrist.

The gun fired into the stone wall.

Federal agents entered through two doors.

Vincent ran toward the damaged west wing.

Damien started after him.

Then the ceiling above Elena collapsed from the force of the shot.

Damien turned back.

He pulled his sister away from the falling stone instead of chasing Vincent.

By the time agents reached the outer grounds, Vincent had disappeared into a service tunnel beneath the academy.

Gideon was freed.

Beneath the chapel altar, investigators found ledgers connecting Briarwell Academy to Sebastian Rowe’s financial network.

Scholarship funds had been used to move money between the Ashford, Mercer, Calloway, and Rowe families.

One account carried Maren’s name.

Three hundred thousand dollars had been paid to Briarwell Academy for her employment and housing.

Maren had received less than twenty thousand.

Someone had been paying the school to keep her visible, poor, and close.

Continue to the next part: Maren discovers her janitor job was created so Vincent could monitor her pregnancy without revealing that Damien survived.
