Chapter 5 - THE JOB THAT WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT

Briarwell Academy had hired Maren three days after she arrived in Boston.

At the time, she believed desperation had created luck.

She walked into the maintenance office wearing borrowed shoes and asked whether they needed night staff.

The supervisor glanced at her application and offered immediate work.

No background delay.

No references.

A room became available inside a staff apartment near campus.

The rent was removed directly from her pay.

She thought the school was helping.

The ledger revealed another reality.

A consulting company called Hale Protective Services paid Briarwell fifteen thousand dollars each month under Maren’s name.

The instructions were precise.

Keep subject employed on campus.

Report medical appointments.

Do not terminate without authorization.

Avoid direct surveillance inside housing.

Notify V upon labor.

Vincent had not abandoned her after Damien’s supposed death.

He had placed her inside a controlled environment.

Every missed shift.

Every prenatal appointment.

Every late payment.

Someone reported it.

Maren sat inside the hospital room reading the contract.

Damien remained near the opposite wall.

“He knew I was struggling.”

“Yes.”

“He had enough money to pay the academy fifteen thousand dollars a month.”

“Yes.”

“He let me work until I nearly collapsed.”

Damien’s voice became low.

“He needed you dependent.”

“He needed me ashamed.”

“Why?”

“So you would not contact anyone connected to my old life.”

Maren looked toward the photographs attached to the report.

She entered the grocery store.

She waited for a bus in the rain.

She sat alone outside the obstetric clinic.

Vincent had watched every lonely moment.

Damien looked at the images.

“I will kill him.”

Maren closed the folder.

“No.”

“He tried to kill you and our child.”

“I am not asking you to forgive him.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“Do not turn my suffering into permission to become the weapon he expects.”

Damien looked away.

The old rage remained visible beneath his control.

She continued.

“You are working with federal investigators. Let them find him.”

“And if they fail?”

“Then we decide what happens without pretending your anger belongs only to you.”

The word we changed something between them.

It was not reconciliation.

It was the first acknowledgement that the child connected their futures.

Gideon Ashford entered federal custody.

He admitted financing the academy surveillance contract.

Vincent told him Maren possessed evidence capable of destroying the Ashford investment firm.

In reality, the gold ring threatened control of Rowe Maritime, whose shipping contracts supported Ashford funds.

Gideon ordered Chloe to learn whether Maren still wore it.

He claimed he never authorized physical harm.

Messages showed he praised Chloe after previous incidents.

Make her feel small enough to leave the ring unattended.

He had encouraged humiliation because it seemed less criminal than kidnapping.

Chloe had escalated.

Sloane’s mother supplied the compound through a behavioral clinic.

Paige’s father obtained the needle from a hospital research division.

All three parents described their actions as protecting their daughters from dangerous people.

The daughters described themselves as following parental instructions.

Each person placed responsibility one step away.

Maren gave a formal statement.

She described the hallway harassment, the gala, the fall, and the needle.

Detective Ortiz asked whether Chloe knew Maren was pregnant.

“She looked directly at my stomach every time she spoke.”

“Did she know the needle could cause labor?”

“Sloane says she did.”

Chloe requested a private meeting.

Maren refused.

The girl sent a recorded statement through her attorney.

“I thought Damien Rowe’s child would destroy my father.”

Maren watched only once.

Chloe appeared without makeup or the silver gown.

She still sounded more frightened for herself than sorry for Maren.

“Vincent said Maren chose to hide behind a uniform. He said she was dangerous.”

Chloe lowered her eyes.

“I wanted her to understand what it felt like to have no power.”

Maren stopped the recording.

Chloe had stood beneath chandeliers, surrounded by family money, adults, and friends filming for amusement.

She had never lacked power in that room.

She had wanted to experience cruelty without consequence.

Damien received an encrypted message that evening.

It came through a server linked to Rowe Maritime.

Vincent appeared on screen.

Behind him stood Sebastian Rowe.

Damien’s uncle looked older but entirely calm.

Vincent had not escaped from Sebastian.

He had returned to him.

Sebastian addressed Damien.

“You allowed federal agents to enter our family.”

“You murdered my mother.”

“She intended to surrender the company to regulators.”

“You mean return what you stole.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Maren has made you sentimental.”

Maren stood beside Damien, outside the camera frame.

Sebastian continued.

“Bring the original ring to Rowe Maritime headquarters tomorrow. Sign control to Vincent, and your child reaches birth safely.”

Damien’s expression did not change.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Sebastian lifted another camera.

Maren’s obstetrician, Dr. Helen Price, sat restrained inside a dark room.

“She knows where Maren will deliver,” Sebastian said.

Maren stepped into frame.

“No, she does not.”

Sebastian’s smile vanished slightly.

Maren had changed hospitals after the gala.

Only Dr. Chen and federal agents knew the new plan.

Dr. Price had old information.

The kidnapping had failed before the demand began.

Then Dr. Price looked toward the camera.

Her lips formed one silent sentence.

They already changed the hospital records.

Maren’s phone received an emergency alert.

A new medical file had been created under her name.

It stated that she suffered from psychosis, falsely believed Damien Rowe was alive, and required immediate involuntary treatment.

The approving physician was Dr. Rebecca Mercer.

Sloane’s mother.

Continue to the next part: The academy board uses psychiatric records to portray Maren’s pregnancy and Damien’s return as dangerous delusions.
