Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

“On your knees.”

Chloe Ashford pointed toward the drink spreading across the marble floor.

“That is where people like you belong.”

Maren Whitlock stood beneath the crystal chandeliers with one hand pressed against her seven month pregnant belly.

She had already worked ten hours.

Her back burned. Her ankles were swollen inside shoes held together with black tape. A thin line of blood moved from her forehead after Paige Calloway had shoved her into the edge of a serving cart.

Around them, Briarwell Academy’s senior gala continued beneath warm golden light.

Parents in designer evening clothes watched from white linen tables. Teachers stood near the stage. Students raised their phones.

Nobody intervened.

Chloe’s father had donated the new science center.

Sloane Mercer’s mother chaired the academy board.

Paige’s family owned half the private hospitals in Massachusetts.

People had learned that silence was safer than embarrassing girls whose surnames appeared on buildings.

Sloane held her phone toward Maren.

The red recording symbol glowed on the screen.

“Do it again,” she said. “The lighting is better from this side.”

Paige laughed.

“Careful. Do not let the janitor cry on the marble.”

Maren looked toward the ballroom doors.

No supervisor came.

No teacher moved.

Her baby shifted beneath her ribs.

She lowered herself slowly, protecting her stomach with both hands.

Her janitor gloves slipped from her fingers.

Chloe stepped closer.

“That was not difficult, was it?”

Maren raised her eyes.

“You spilled the drink.”

“You are paid to clean it.”

“I am paid to clean the building. Not to let you humiliate me.”

A few students gasped.

Chloe’s polished smile disappeared.

She caught Maren by the shoulder and forced her lower.

“You should remember who owns this school.”

A sharp pain moved through Maren’s side.

She lost her balance.

Her palm struck the marble.

The thin gold chain beneath her uniform slipped above her collar.

A small black ring hung from it.

Chloe stared at the ring.

Recognition appeared for one brief second.

Then she reached for it.

“Where did you get that?”

Maren closed her hand around the chain.

“Do not touch it.”

Chloe’s fingers tightened against her shoulder.

“Take it off.”

“No.”

Paige moved behind Maren.

Sloane continued recording.

The ballroom doors opened with enough force to strike the walls.

The sound crossed the room.

Three men entered.

The first wore a black tailored suit without a tie. His dark hair was shorter than Maren remembered. A pale scar cut through one eyebrow.

He had the same controlled posture.

The same unreadable eyes.

The same presence that made conversations stop before people understood why.

Damien Rowe walked into the ballroom.

Maren forgot how to breathe.

Seven months earlier, Vincent Hale had placed a bag of cash in her lap and told her Damien had died during an attack in Chicago.

She had waited for confirmation.

News reports showed a burned vehicle.

A private memorial followed.

Men from Damien’s organization disappeared.

Someone entered Maren’s apartment two nights later.

She ran before they found her.

Now the dead man stood beneath the chandeliers.

His gaze moved across the guests.

Then he saw Maren on the floor.

He stopped.

Every trace of control left his face for one second.

“Maren?”

Her name sounded broken in his voice.

She looked up at him.

The scar was real.

The man was real.

Chloe released Maren’s shoulder and turned with irritated arrogance.

“This does not concern you.”

Damien’s eyes moved toward Chloe’s hand.

Then toward the blood on Maren’s forehead.

Sloane slowly lowered her phone.

One of Damien’s men closed the ballroom doors.

The other remained beside the entrance.

Damien crossed the floor.

Guests moved out of his path before he reached them.

Chloe lifted her chin.

“My father is Gideon Ashford.”

Damien did not look at her.

He knelt beside Maren.

His hands stopped inches from her body.

“May I touch you?”

The question almost destroyed her.

Everyone else had moved her, pushed her, cornered her, or decided where she belonged.

Damien waited.

Maren nodded once.

He slid one arm behind her back and helped her stand carefully.

Her knees shook.

He removed his coat and placed it around her shoulders.

Then he saw the curve of her stomach.

His gaze remained there.

The calculation appeared slowly.

Seven months.

The attack had happened seven months earlier.

His eyes lifted toward hers.

“Is the baby mine?”

Maren’s lips trembled.

She did not answer in front of the ballroom.

She did not need to.

Damien saw the black ring hanging from the gold chain.

It had belonged to his mother.

He gave it to Maren the night before the attack.

Only one woman had ever worn it.

His expression became cold enough to frighten the people nearest him.

“Who put her on the floor?”

Chloe laughed nervously.

“You are being dramatic. She works here.”

Damien finally looked at her.

Maren had seen men threaten him with guns.

She had watched powerful people insult him across private tables.

None of them had frightened her as much as the silence in his face now.

Chloe took one step backward.

Sloane’s phone trembled in her hand.

Paige looked toward the ballroom exit and discovered Damien’s men blocking it.

Maren gripped his coat.

“They said you were dead.”

Damien looked at her.

“I was told you were killed in an apartment fire.”

“What fire?”

“The one Vincent said destroyed everything after you disappeared.”

Her stomach tightened.

Vincent had lied to both of them.

Damien turned toward the girls.

“Who told you to take the ring?”

Chloe’s face lost color.

“I do not know what you mean.”

“You recognized it.”

“I did not.”

Damien extended one hand toward Sloane.

“Give me the phone.”

She looked toward her mother near the head table.

Dr. Rebecca Mercer stood frozen beside the academy president.

“Mom?”

Rebecca did not approach.

She looked afraid of Damien.

More afraid than a school board chair should have been.

Sloane handed him the phone.

The recording continued.

Damien watched the final seconds.

Chloe forcing Maren down.

Paige blocking her.

Sloane filming.

Then another detail entered the frame.

Before the ballroom doors opened, Chloe whispered toward someone beyond the camera.

“She still has Rowe’s ring. Tell my father.”

Damien replayed the line.

Every guest heard it.

He lifted his eyes toward Chloe.

“Your father knew Maren was here.”

Chloe looked toward Gideon Ashford’s empty chair.

The place card remained.

His champagne remained untouched.

He had left the ballroom minutes before Damien entered.

One of Damien’s men received a message through his earpiece.

“Mr. Rowe, Ashford’s vehicle just left the academy.”

“Stop it.”

“We tried.”

“What happened?”

The man looked toward Maren.

May you like

“Vincent Hale is driving.”

Continue to the next part: Damien discovers the lieutenant who told Maren he was dead has been working with Chloe’s father since the night of the ambush.
