Chapter 2 - THE LIE THAT SEPARATED THEM

Damien did not chase the vehicle.

That surprised everyone.

The man Maren remembered would have ordered every road blocked and every driver dragged from the car.

The man standing beside her looked toward the blood near her hairline and made a different decision.

“Call an ambulance.”

Chloe’s expression brightened with relief.

Damien turned toward his security chief.

“No one leaves the ballroom until police preserve every recording.”

The relief vanished.

Academy President Walter Pierce hurried from the stage.

He was a narrow man in his sixties with silver glasses and a voice designed to calm wealthy parents.

“Mr. Rowe, this is a school event. We must avoid frightening the students.”

“A pregnant employee was forced onto the floor while adults watched.”

“We do not yet understand the context.”

Maren felt Damien’s hand become still against her arm.

She spoke before he could.

“The context is visible on the phone.”

Pierce looked at her uniform.

“Maren, perhaps you should focus on receiving medical care.”

“You mean I should leave before the parents ask why nobody helped.”

His polite expression tightened.

Damien noticed.

“So did I.”

Police sirens approached through the academy gates.

The girls were separated.

Chloe immediately demanded her family attorney.

Sloane began crying after Detective Lena Ortiz asked for her phone passcode.

Paige insisted the humiliation had been a joke.

Maren sat in a chair near the stage while a paramedic checked her blood pressure.

It was dangerously high.

The baby’s heartbeat remained steady, but the medic wanted her transported for observation.

Damien stayed several feet away.

He did not attempt to touch her again.

The distance hurt more than she expected.

“You were alive,” she said.

“Yes.”

“For seven months.”

“I was unconscious for nineteen days.”

“And after?”

“I searched for you.”

“Vincent knew where I was.”

“I know that now.”

“You trusted him.”

“He saved my life twice before the attack.”

“He gave me cash and told me to disappear.”

Damien’s jaw tightened.

“What exactly did he say?”

“That you died inside the convoy. He said your enemies knew about me and the baby.”

“The baby?”

Maren looked toward him.

“I had taken a pregnancy test that morning. Vincent found it inside my bag.”

Damien became completely still.

“He knew before I did.”

“I was going to tell you that night.”

“What happened after he took you from the hotel?”

“He drove me to a private airfield. He gave me a new phone and said I had ten minutes to choose whether our child survived.”

Damien’s expression darkened.

“He threatened you.”

“He said it was reality.”

Maren remembered Vincent’s calm voice.

Damien is dead. The men who killed him will use you to find every remaining account. Run or let your baby become a message.

She had boarded the aircraft.

It took her to Providence.

From there, she traveled to Boston, changed her surname back to Whitlock, and took the first job that paid in cash.

“What were you told about me?” she asked.

“That your apartment burned during the attack. Vincent said your body was identified through dental records.”

“My dental records?”

“Were supplied by a private clinic.”

Maren had visited one clinic during her relationship with Damien.

The appointment had been arranged by Vincent.

Both deaths had been constructed by the same man.

An emergency physician entered the ballroom and looked at Maren’s forehead.

“You may need stitches.”

“I am coming with her,” Damien said.

Maren looked at him.

“No.”

The single word stopped him.

“I need space to understand why your world followed me into another state.”

His eyes showed pain.

He accepted it.

“I will follow in another vehicle.”

“That is not space.”

“I need to know you arrive safely.”

“You do not get to control me because you are frightened.”

The words landed between them.

Damien lowered his voice.

“You are right.”

Maren had never heard him say that so quickly.

Detective Ortiz approached carrying Sloane’s phone.

“There are more recordings.”

Sloane had filmed Maren for weeks.

Short clips showed Chloe spilling drinks, hiding cleaning supplies, and ordering younger students to report Maren for theft.

In one video, Chloe spoke privately with her father near the academy library.

The audio was faint but clear.

“She still wears the ring,” Chloe said.

Gideon Ashford answered:

“Then Rowe’s child is alive.”

Maren touched the gold chain.

The baby moved beneath her hand.

Detective Ortiz replayed the line.

Damien looked toward the empty seat at the head table.

“What does the ring have to do with the child?” Maren asked.

Damien hesitated.

She saw it immediately.

“You are hiding something again.”

“The ring is part of the Rowe family trust.”

“I thought it belonged to your mother.”

“It did.”

“That is not an answer.”

“My mother created a protection before she died. Any child acknowledged through that ring receives voting control over her shares when born.”

Maren stared at him.

“How much control?”

“Thirty one percent of Rowe Maritime.”

The number carried more power than some governments.

Maren looked around the ballroom.

The girls had not targeted a poor pregnant janitor only for amusement.

Chloe knew the unborn child could control an empire.

“Did you give me the ring because you knew I was pregnant?”

“No. I gave it to you because I intended to ask you to marry me.”

Her breath caught.

Damien continued.

“Vincent knew what the ring meant. So did Gideon.”

Detective Ortiz opened another recovered message from Sloane’s phone.

Chloe had sent it twenty minutes before the gala began.

She is in the ballroom. Make her take off the chain before Rowe arrives.

The response came from a contact saved only as V.

Do not let her leave with it.

Maren looked toward Damien.

“Vincent knew you were coming tonight.”

“Yes.”

“Then this humiliation was not random.”

“No.”

The paramedic lifted Maren’s dropped janitor gloves from the floor.

Something metallic fell from inside the left glove.

A small needle rolled across the marble.

The medic stopped.

Maren stared at it.

“I have never seen that.”

Detective Ortiz put on gloves.

A clear residue covered the tip.

Sloane began crying from across the ballroom.

“Chloe said it would only make her dizzy.”

Chloe turned toward her.

“Shut up.”

The room became silent.

Sloane continued.

“She told Paige to put it inside Maren’s glove before the gala.”

Paige’s face collapsed.

“I did not know she was pregnant.”

The physician sealed the needle.

“What was inside it?” Maren asked.

Sloane looked toward Chloe.

May you like

“She said it would make the baby come early.”

Continue to the next part: The girls’ prank becomes an attempted premature delivery designed to seize control of Damien’s unborn heir.
