Chapter 6 - Give Her a Week

Collapy claimed she did not understand the voice note at the time.

“I thought he meant you’d agree to investment.”

“You heard him say your mother would make me sign.”

“I know.”

“You laughed.”

Her face flushed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you were dramatic.”

I almost walked inside.

She stopped me.

“There’s more.”

Of course.

She opened a message thread.

Thatcher:

Mom needs to stop treating Eloin like a guest.

Collapy:

Meaning?

Thatcher:

She needs structure. If she thinks she can keep everything separate after marriage, this won’t work.

Collapy:

You mean condo.

Thatcher:

Condo, money, all of it.

Then:

Collapy:

She’ll lose it if Mom tells her to serve dinner.

Thatcher:

She’ll fight first. Then she’ll calm down. She always does.

I stared.

He knew my conflict pattern.

I argued.

Then I apologized for tone.

Then I compromised.

He had turned my willingness to repair relationships into a tool.

“Why are you giving me this?”

Collapy whispered:

“Because he’s telling everyone the mortgage was my idea.”

That was not courage.

Self preservation.

Fine.

Evidence did not need noble motives.

Detective Morgan interviewed her separately.

Collapy admitted:

She opened Carter Property Solutions.

She gave Thatcher bank instructions.

She knew money would come from my condo.

She believed I had agreed.

She never saw me sign anything.

She never attended closing.

She knew Dorothia wanted me to “learn family rules.”

She did not know notary was dead.

She did not create fake email.

She did not submit loan package.

That placed her somewhere between participant and manipulated beneficiary.

Prosecutors would decide later.

Then Northpoint provided IP logs.

Loan application started from an address matching Dorothia’s Newton home.

Uploaded from a Windows laptop.

Browser fingerprint corresponded to a device Thatcher used on multiple legitimate lender portals through his job.

Not perfect identification.

Strong.

A second upload happened from Thatcher’s office network.

His employer, Granite Commercial Finance, placed him on administrative leave after police subpoenaed records.

He called me furious.

“You got me suspended.”

“No.”

“You reported me.”

“Northpoint did.”

“My mother is losing sleep.”

“I lost my condo title.”

“You didn’t lose anything.”

“That may be the most insane sentence you’ve said.”

“The loan was for us.”

“No.”

“You’re my wife.”

“Not for long.”

He lowered his voice.

“Eloin, come home.”

I laughed.

“Why?”

“Because lawyers are turning a family misunderstanding into a criminal case.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I used documents you gave me.”

“That is not permission.”

“We were getting married.”

“That is not permission.”

“You said you trusted me.”

“That is definitely not permission.”

Silence.

Then:

“If you keep going, everyone loses.”

I remembered Dorothia’s table.

Wives eat last.

Maybe that was the Carter philosophy.

Everyone loses until the right person gives in.

I replied:

“Then stop asking me to lose first.”

I hung up.

That evening, Naomi received Thatcher’s divorce response.

Attached was something new.

A postnuptial agreement.

Dated the morning after our wedding.

Signed:

Thatcher Carter.

Eloin Carter.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

May you like

This time, I recognized it immediately.

Because unlike the mortgage signature, this one was genuine.
