Chapter 13 - Dorothia’s House Rules

Dorothia requested a meeting.

I refused.

She sent a letter instead.

It began:

I understand now why you believe I mistreated you.

I stopped reading.

Believe?

Not did.

Believe.

Naomi said I was not required to consume apologies that were arguments.

I put it away.

Weeks later, Dorothia changed attorneys.

Her new lawyer pursued cooperation.

She gave a formal statement.

She admitted helping Thatcher copy Marian Doyle’s notarial block.

She admitted knowing I had not personally signed the mortgage in front of Marian.

Obviously.

Marian was dead.

She claimed Thatcher told her I had already electronically agreed and the notary page was “only a technical correction.”

That might reduce her understanding of full fraud.

Except text:

She doesn’t need to know until after.

From Dorothia to Thatcher.

The context concerned Northpoint funding.

Prosecutors did not accept innocent technicality.

But Dorothia also revealed something about Thatcher.

“He told us Eloin wanted to keep condo because she planned to leave him someday.”

I stared when Naomi relayed.

That was a lie.

I never said it.

Then another.

“He said Eloin’s father had hidden the condo from marital planning.”

Also false.

Thatcher did not merely use his mother.

He fed her fears.

Dorothia already disliked my independence.

He told her it was evidence I rejected family.

He told Collapy I looked down on her business.

He told me Dorothia was old fashioned but harmless.

He kept everyone slightly angry at everyone else.

Then positioned himself as translator.

A pattern.

Collapy eventually showed Detective Morgan messages from years earlier.

Thatcher to Collapy after an argument I had with Dorothia about wedding venue:

Eloin thinks Mom is controlling.

Collapy:

She is.

Thatcher:

Don’t say that to Eloin. She needs to feel like she’s the unreasonable one or this family falls apart.

My chest tightened.

Seven years.

Not one desperate financial scheme.

A habit.

He maintained peace by assigning guilt to whoever was easiest to pressure.

Usually me.

Later Dorothia would say:

“I thought my son was choosing me.”

He wasn’t.

He was choosing control.

Her domination served him until it didn’t.

The dinner scene, which I initially saw as proof my husband was weak, became proof of something worse.

He watched.

He knew exactly what Dorothia would say.

He had helped create the conditions.

Then waited to see whether I obeyed.

When I pushed the platter and left, I did something his plan had not allowed for.

I refused the repair cycle.

No apology.

No return.

No Friday signatures.

That one broken plate may have saved my condo.

Not legally.

The title alert did that.

May you like

Emotionally.

The decision to leave gave me enough distance to believe evidence instead of his explanation.
