Chapter 12 - Friday’s Papers

The Friday folder made the psychological plan impossible to ignore.

The quitclaim deed would have transferred a fifty percent interest in my condo to a trust named:

Carter Family Residential Trust.

Trustee:

Thatcher.

The power of attorney would have given him authority over property management and financing.

The “voluntary contribution” statement claimed I intended my condo to become part of our marital investment plan.

None had signatures.

They never reached me.

I had left Tuesday.

One internal note written by Thatcher:

Mom softens first. I present Friday after apology.

I stared.

“After apology?”

Naomi nodded.

He expected me to apologize for refusing dinner rules.

Then, emotionally exhausted and eager to restore peace, sign.

It sounded insane.

It also sounded exactly like our seven year relationship.

Dorothia creates conflict.

I resist.

Thatcher mediates.

I apologize for harshness.

He asks for compromise.

Repeat.

This time compromise would have been property.

I finally understood why Thatcher wanted to live with Dorothia immediately after the wedding.

Not to save money.

Not because she needed help.

Environment.

He wanted me somewhere his mother’s authority felt established.

His sister reinforced it.

He played reasonable husband.

A pressure system.

My father looked sick when I showed him.

“I told you not to marry him.”

“You did not.”

“I thought it loudly.”

I laughed for first time in weeks.

He smiled.

Then became serious.

“Do not make yourself stupid for loving someone.”

“I missed so much.”

“So did I.”

That mattered.

Dad had liked Thatcher eventually.

Everyone had.

Thatcher did not spend seven years acting like villain.

He was funny.

Attentive.

He knew my coffee order.

He cared for me through pneumonia.

He sent my mother flowers after surgery.

People who commit terrible betrayals are not always terrible in every minute.

That is why betrayal works.

The district attorney approved charges.

Thatcher surrendered.

His booking photograph appeared online.

I closed the page.

Dorothia was charged later with conspiracy and forgery related participation based on notary evidence and messages.

Collapy faced aiding/attempt charges connected to receiving fraud proceeds and her knowledge.

All three entered not guilty pleas initially.

No conviction yet.

Important.

The civil divorce moved separately.

Thatcher asked for spousal support.

Naomi almost smiled.

He had lost job.

Our marriage had lasted days legally, though relationship years.

Massachusetts law considers multiple factors.

His request was weak.

Then he claimed half the condo’s appreciation during our seven year premarital relationship should be marital because he “contributed labor.”

We had not been married during most appreciation.

He had occasionally fixed shelves and paid some utility bills while staying over.

That did not magically create half ownership.

Still, divorce courts can examine contributions after marriage.

Marriage lasted under a month before separation.

The condo remained overwhelmingly separate.

His own fraudulent attempts made his equitable argument worse.

At one hearing, Thatcher looked at me across courtroom.

I expected anger.

He looked frightened.

Afterward, through counsel, he offered:

He would accept divorce terms and waive any condo claim if I wrote a letter asking prosecutors for leniency.

Naomi asked:

“What do you want to do?”

“Nothing.”

“Correct.”

Civil property rights were not bargaining chips for criminal silence.

For once, I did not compromise to end discomfort.
