Chapter 17 - Thatcher Goes to Trial

Thatcher changed his mind two weeks before trial.

He accepted a plea agreement.

His attorney had spent months challenging metadata, lender practices, and the meaning of my verbal statements.

None erased core facts.

Thatcher admitted:

He created the fake borrower email.

He submitted loan materials using my identity.

He copied my signature image.

He assembled the false postnuptial document.

He used the deceased notary’s information.

He intended to obtain loan proceeds secured by my condo without my informed authorization.

He also admitted he knew I had not agreed to the specific loan when it closed.

That final sentence mattered most.

No:

She would have agreed.

No:

Marriage.

No:

Family emergency.

He knew.

At sentencing, the prosecutor described the scheme as planned financial exploitation within an intimate relationship.

My victim statement was shorter than people expected.

“Thatcher did not steal only money. He tried to convert trust into authorization. For years, when I questioned his family, he told me love meant compromise. Then he used that same idea to justify signing my name. I am asking the court to treat the property fraud seriously without pretending every failure in our marriage was a crime.”

The judge looked at me.

Then Thatcher.

His sentence combined a custodial term of several years on the most serious fraud count, suspended portions subject to probation? Need concrete but realistic. Let's say 30 months in state custody followed by probation, restitution. Massachusetts fraud could vary, but okay. We shouldn't overstate statutory specifics.

He received thirty months of incarceration, followed by supervised probation and restitution obligations, considering no prior record, guilty plea, recovery of most funds, and extensive planning.

Dorothia received a suspended jail sentence with probation, community service, and restitution due her lesser role, age, cooperation, and lack of record.

Collapy received probation, restitution, and community service after cooperation.

Some people told me Collapy “got away with it.”

I disagreed.

She lost business.

Money.

Family trust.

Reputation.

And carried conviction/plea consequences.

Prison is not the only form of accountability.

Thatcher looked at me before deputies led him away.

I expected apology.

He said:

“You really let this happen.”

Even after admitting guilt.

I stared.

Then understood.

He still believed my refusal to protect him was an action against him.

I answered:

“No, Thatcher.”

My voice stayed calm.

May you like

“I finally stopped preventing what you did from reaching you.”

Then I walked out.
