Chapter 7 - The Eighty Five Thousand Dollars

Daniel’s brokerage account existed.
That was fact.
Opened five years earlier through a financial adviser named Preston Webb.
Daniel remembered.
“I put $5,000 in and forgot.”
The account now had over $100,000.
The $85,000 transfer from Evelyn’s account had arrived three weeks before death.
Description:
ADVANCE D.
Daniel’s first reaction:
“Mom gave?”
Maybe.
But no gift memorandum.
Then login logs showed transfer initiated from Evelyn’s device? Her laptop at home.
At time, she was bedridden but could use.
Frank had access too.
Lydia said:
“Don’t assume.”
Then Parker searched records.
He found handwritten note from Evelyn dated same week:
Daniel advance 85K against residual share for business liquidity. Claire aware? Discuss later.
I was not aware.
But signature matched and nurse note showed Evelyn lucid.
Parker had not witnessed.
Could still be valid.
Then email from Evelyn to Daniel?
No.
Why not tell?
Maybe wanted surprise support.
Daniel’s company had cash issue? He did not request. Maybe Rachel did in his name.
Then Rachel’s phone texts recovered.
Rachel to Evelyn, six months before death:
Daniel will never ask, but expansion is eating him alive.
Evelyn:
If he needs help, he can ask me.
Rachel:
He’s proud.
Then later:
Evelyn:
I moved something for him. Please tell him after quarter closes so he doesn’t send back immediately.
There.
The transfer was genuine gift initiated by Evelyn.
Rachel knew.
Daniel did not.
So not all secrecy criminal.
Then why advance against residual share?
Evelyn wanted equalization: Daniel received 85K early, estate would reduce later distribution.
Fine.
This removed suspicion from Daniel.
But Rachel had hidden gift from him and possibly spent? Did she access account? The brokerage remained intact because Daniel forgot. So she didn't.
Maybe she knew, but it didn't help immediate debt.
Then special administrator found Rachel had referenced this transfer in draft release as example of “Evelyn’s regular family gifting pattern” to justify others.
She used genuine gift to camouflage fake invoices.
Clever.
Then another text:
Rachel to Frank:
The 85 proves she gifted without paperwork.
Frank:
That one has note.
Rachel:
Claire hasn’t seen.
Frank:
Doesn’t matter. Pattern is pattern.
They knew.
Then estate audit separated.
Unsupported $161,800.
Of this:
$88,000 Frank Porter Family Services after revocation.
$46,000 Rachel entities.
$27,800 joint unclear? maybe overlap.
Let's settle total charged later ~134k after some expenses recognized.
Then criminal financial case merged with assault conspiracy.
Prosecutor wanted avoid jury confusion with probate.
Maybe separate indictments/trials.
Rachel and Frank could face assault/poisoning first, financial fraud later or combined conspiracy narrative.
Their lawyers considered plea.
Frank refused.
Rachel maybe separated legal strategy.
Then Daniel’s marriage.
He discovered Rachel had hidden other finances.
Joint credit card $44,000.
A personal loan $75,000 under her business.
He had co-signed? His electronic signature on one guarantee.
He did not remember.
Forensic signature maybe copied from prior DocuSign.
Another criminal allegation?
Could be, but too much. Let's keep some real: Rachel had used her own credit and joint card legitimately, hidden debt but not forged Daniel. Avoid stacking.
She had $119k debt from event design company.
That explains motive for estate money.
Her company lost clients during pandemic/recovery? Current 2026. Fine.
She feared telling Daniel.
Frank offered access to “family reimbursements.”
They bonded over secret.
Then Noah therapy.
He began drawing people without faces.
He said:
“If I tell truth, Mom leaves.”
Therapist:
“Mom’s choices led court.”
Then:
“But if I didn’t record?”
“Adults might still investigate. We don’t know.”
Important.
No burden.
Then Rachel’s supervised call.
This time she said:
“Noah, I want you to know you did nothing wrong by giving Dad tablet.”
That was progress.
Her lawyer likely coached, but still.
Noah asked:
“Did you put medicine?”
She could not discuss.
“I made a serious mistake involving Aunt Claire. I’m sorry you saw.”
Not full.
He said:
“It wasn’t mistake. You crushed.”
Rachel cried.
Call ended.
Then Claire leg.
Orthopedist said kick caused soft tissue injury but no setback requiring surgery. Additional 2 weeks of limited weight bearing.
I was angry.
“My own father used crutch.”
The doctor said nothing dramatic.
Documented.
Then one night alone, I heard metal clatter from closet.
My spare crutch fell.
I froze.
Then laughed shakily.
Objects become charged.
I still needed crutch.
I used it.
I refused let Frank take utility.
Then Parker called.
He had found a voicemail from Evelyn saved on office system.
Recorded 12 days before death.
She said:
“Tom, I think Frank moved money again after I told him not to. Don’t confront him while I’m this sick. Just make sure Claire audits.”
That direct evidence changed financial case.
Then:
“Rachel has been helping him with invoices. I don’t know if Daniel knows. I don’t think he does.”
Daniel listened.
Closed eyes.
Mom had protected him from accusation.
Then final line:
“And if Claire starts doubting herself, remind her I chose her because she doesn’t.”
I cried.
Even dead, Mom knew exact attack Frank would use.
Unstable.
Difficult.
Disrespectful.
May you like
She had named those traits differently.
Persistent.
