Chapter 16 - Frank’s First Letter

Frank wrote three years into sentence.
Claire,
I have rewritten this eleven times.
I almost stopped.
Then:
You were right to audit.
Direct.
Then:
Your mother was right to revoke my authority.
Harder.
Then:
The money I took was not all stolen in my mind. Some represented work and loans I believed real. But once Evelyn told me no, I had no right to pay myself.
Specific.
Then:
I hated that she trusted you to review me.
Then:
After your accident, I told myself concern about your medication was legitimate. It became an excuse.
Then:
When Rachel suggested making you look impaired, I knew it was wrong and agreed.
Then:
I hit you.
No “with crutch by accident.”
Then:
The part I struggle with most is Noah’s face.
I remembered.
The boy crying.
Then:
I was more concerned with forcing you to apologize than with what children were seeing.
Then:
I do not ask you to visit.
Good.
Then:
I am sorry.
I gave to therapist.
“Do you believe?”
“Yes.”
“Want reply?”
“No.”
Not yet.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did Dad write?”
“Yes.”
“What say?”
“Private.”
He respected.
Then Frank and Daniel correspondence?
Daniel had chosen limited.
He wrote father once a year.
Noah no contact due court and his preference.
Frank not entitled.
Then Rachel release timeline.
Sentence 5y8m, with credits perhaps served 4y10m. Noah now about 13.
Before release, family court evaluation.
Rachel had completed treatment programs, no disciplinary issues, ongoing therapy, accepted responsibility.
Daniel had remarried? Maybe not yet. Let's not rush.
Rachel wanted rebuild with Noah.
Noah thirteen.
He had been visiting prison video and occasional in person? Could have. He wanted mother.
The court set gradual supervised in person after release.
I had no role beyond no contact condition.
Rachel asked through counsel whether I would permit contact at future family events.
“No for now.”
Safe.
Then release.
She moved to transitional apartment, worked event company? Can't return maybe. She found administrative job at florist? Avoid too thematic. She worked office manager at catering supplier.
No access to Daniel finances.
Noah supervised visits.
First:
“Mom.”
She cried.
“Hi.”
He hugged.
No one told him not.
Then he asked:
“Do you still hate Aunt Claire?”
Rachel:
“I never should have treated her like enemy.”
Then:
“Do you?”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Will Aunt Claire hate me if I love you?”
“No.”
That was important.
Rachel did not make child choose.
Then after year, unsupervised daytime.
Then overnights after court review.
Daniel remained primary.
No automatic full.
Then Rachel asked me to attend a mediated apology session.
I declined at first.
Two years later, I agreed.
She was nearly 40? Actually start 30s, maybe early 40s by then.
We sat.
Rachel:
“I put medication in your drink.”
“Yes.”
“I knew your leg was injured.”
“Yes.”
“I pushed.”
“Yes.”
“Kicked.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I planted bottle.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I wanted strangers to think you did it to yourself.”
That line.
“I’m sorry.”
I asked:
“Why did you say I ruined Noah’s birthday?”
“Because if I admitted I pushed you, plan was over.”
Then:
“Why kick?”
She cried.
“You kept saying truth.”
“That's why?”
“I was panicking. You weren’t collapsing the way I expected. Cake fell, everyone looked, I needed you to be villain.”
Then:
“Did you ever think about Noah seeing?”
“No enough.”
Then:
“Did you blame him?”
“For minutes. Then I knew.”
She cried.
“I told him shut up.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I am more ashamed of that than prison.”
I don't compare.
Then boundaries.
No direct friendship.
We could be in same room at Noah milestones if he wanted.
No physical closeness.
No discussing inheritance.
She accepted.
Then first shared event:
Noah’s middle school graduation.
Rachel sat one side.
I another.
No drama.
No hugs.
No one forced family photo.
Noah chose separate.
Good.
Then Frank release still years away.
My leg long healed.
I had mild arthritis in cold.
I bought no crutch.
Then the original crutch was released from evidence.
Police asked return.
I said no.
It was recycled/disposed per policy.
No relic.
Then my pink cake stained dress? I had thrown out at hospital maybe evidence then returned. I donated? No. Discarded.
No shrine.
Then one day, Noah asked:
“Can we have pink cake for my fourteenth?”
I stared.
He smiled.
“Not because therapy. I like strawberry.”
May you like
We bought.
That mattered.
