Chapter 17 - The Pink Cake

Noah’s fourteenth birthday had six friends.

Not thirty relatives.

Daniel grilled burgers.

Rachel attended for two hours because Noah requested and custody plan allowed.

I came late.

No crutch.

Pink strawberry cake on table.

When I saw it, my stomach tightened.

Noah noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You can say no.”

I laughed.

“It’s your cake.”

Then he handed me knife.

“You cut first.”

“Why?”

“Because last one attacked you.”

“Cake did nothing.”

He grinned.

“Exactly.”

I cut.

Pink frosting.

No flashback dramatic.

Just cake.

Then Rachel entered kitchen.

She froze seeing me with knife.

We both almost laughed at absurd.

“Hi, Claire.”

“Rachel.”

Then:

“Looks good.”

“It does.”

No more.

Noah filmed candles on tablet.

I watched.

No panic.

After, he showed video.

“See? Normal.”

“Don’t tempt universe.”

He laughed.

Then Daniel told me he was dating someone.

A woman named Grace Morgan, public school librarian.

No hurry.

No secrecy.

He had waited years.

Noah knew.

Rachel knew and struggled but behaved.

Then Daniel asked:

“Do you think it’s too soon?”

“It’s been six years.”

“I mean Noah.”

“Ask Noah.”

Good.

No family CEO.

Then Grace met.

Normal.

She knew Rachel history but did not interrogate.

Eventually married? Later maybe.

Then Frank parole/release planning.

He served around six years and nine months of eight with credits before supervised release.

He was seventy one.

Victim notification.

I had choice input.

I wrote:

I do not oppose release if sentence rules allow and risk professionals find appropriate. I request no direct contact and no presence at my residence or workplace unless I later consent.

No vengeance.

Daniel similar.

Noah, now fifteen, did not want contact.

Good.

Frank released to his brother Mark’s small home.

No business license restriction? His company gone.

He worked part time bookkeeping? Given financial crime maybe supervision bars fiduciary. He did maintenance at hardware store.

He completed restitution through estate surcharge and asset sale.

No financial need from children.

Then one afternoon, I saw him at a gas station.

Accidental.

He stood at pump.

I froze.

He saw.

He did not approach.

He raised hand slightly, then lowered.

Got in car.

Left.

I sat in mine shaking.

No violation.

Then later he requested contact via supervision officer.

I declined.

Six months.

Again.

I agreed to letter only.

He wrote:

Thank you for letting me write.

Then:

I saw you at gas station. I wanted to say sorry. I knew approaching would be for me, not you.

Good.

Then:

I am not asking to be your father again.

That hurt.

Then:

I would like one conversation before I die, if you ever want.

No urgency.

I put away.

Then Noah asked:

“Grandpa out?”

“Yes.”

“Can he come birthday?”

“No.”

His decision? The no-contact order toward Noah maybe expired but he didn't want.

“No.”

Daniel:

“Then no.”

No pressure.

Then Frank saw Rachel? They had not spoken since trial.

He sent apology blaming himself partly.

Rachel did not respond.

Fine.

Then mother Evelyn memory.

Daniel and I established small scholarship from our own inheritance? Maybe not necessary.

We donated her recipe books to family? no.

Life ordinary.

Then I became partner at architecture/project management firm? Let's settle: I was senior project manager at an architecture and facilities company. At 42, promoted director.

No family money.

No revenge career.

Then leg.

At 42, knee pain.

Doctor says post-traumatic arthritis from car accident aggravated by later kick but manageable.

Rachel’s kick contributed some soft tissue but main accident.

No exaggerated permanent disability.

I worked.

Then I decided contact Frank.

Why?

May you like

Not because he was old.

Because I wanted questions answered.
