Chapter 4 - The Bottle in My Purse

The bottle changed the case.
Rachel could still claim she accidentally contaminated my drink.
Hard with video.
But the bottle inside my purse suggested staging.
Fingerprint analysis later found Rachel’s prints and mine? Mine perhaps from police? I had never touched bottle before discovery. If my prints absent, fine. Label clear. There were maybe a few tablets remaining.
The prescription was Rachel’s.
Detective Grant asked:
“Did you know she carried this?”
“No.”
“Did she ever give you medication?”
“No.”
“Do you take anything same class?”
“No.”
Then Daniel remembered.
At party, my handbag had been on foyer bench.
Rachel moved guests’ coats and bags “to make room.”
Noah’s camera may have captured.
It did.
At 1:51 p.m., Rachel picked up my handbag? Wait I arrived 2:18, so not yet. Need after arrival. A later clip from Noah walking around with tablet showed Rachel reaching into my purse at 2:33 while I was talking to Frank near kitchen. She looked around and put something inside.
That was powerful.
Then Rachel’s text to friend? Police later.
But immediate:
Daniel sat beside my bed silent.
Finally:
“How long have you thought she was involved in Mom’s money?”
“About three months.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
He looked.
“When?”
“July 9. I emailed you spreadsheet.”
He opened.
No email.
I searched sent.
It was sent.
Correct address.
Then his inbox filter?
A rule had moved messages from me containing “estate”, “Rachel”, “audit” to archive folder.
Who had access to his email?
Rachel knew password.
Daniel stared.
“Jesus.”
She had been filtering me.
Not all messages.
Only financial dispute.
Then another email July 14 from me:
We need to talk about transfers linked to Rachel’s company.
Archived unread.
Daniel looked physically ill.
“I thought you never followed up.”
“I thought you ignored.”
Cause.
Then Detective:
“Do not change account settings yet if we need preserve. We can document.”
Good.
Then hospital advocate brought safety information.
I felt embarrassed.
At thirty four.
A professional woman with own apartment.
Still abused by father at birthday.
Abuse does not require cohabitation.
Then CT head clear.
I stayed overnight due sedative and head blow.
Daniel slept in chair until 3 a.m., then police asked him return home? He couldn't go because scene. He stayed.
At 4:20, Detective called.
Frank arrested on charges related to assault and suspected conspiracy to administer substance, pending final charging review.
Rachel arrested too on assault, administration of substance without consent, evidence tampering/staging, and conspiracy allegations.
Exact charges could change.
They would have bail hearing.
Then Noah.
He was with Melissa.
He kept asking:
“Is Aunt Claire dead?”
I demanded video call.
His face appeared.
“Hey, birthday boy.”
He burst crying.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I recorded.”
“Why sorry?”
“Mom said I ruined family.”
Daniel stiffened.
“When?”
“Police took her and she said because of me.”
My heart broke.
“Noah.”
He looked.
“You did not cause anything.”
“But I pressed record.”
“Your mother and Grandpa made choices. Recording only showed them.”
He cried.
“Did cake hurt?”
“A little.”
“Are you mad?”
“At cake?”
“At me.”
“Never.”
Then:
“Your birthday is not ruined because of you.”
He whispered:
“I don’t want another birthday.”
That sentence would take years to undo.
Then Daniel said:
“I love you, bud. Stay with Aunt Melissa tonight.”
Noah nodded.
Then after call Daniel sat.
“I don’t know how to go home.”
Because Rachel lived there.
Police scene.
Marriage shattered.
I said:
“One thing at a time.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You’re in hospital telling me.”
“I’ve had practice this week.”
Then morning.
Thomas Parker, mother’s estate attorney, arrived.
I had not called.
Detective had, because Rachel and Frank invoked his name on video.
He looked angry.
“Claire, I need to clarify something.”
“What?”
“I never told Frank that one party video could remove you as executor.”
“I assumed.”
Then:
“He called me Thursday.”
“What did he ask?”
“What evidence court would require to find executor medically unfit.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you say?”
“That temporary physical injury does not mean incapacity and that removal requires legal grounds and due process.”
Then:
“He asked whether medication misuse mattered.”
“And?”
“I told him credible medical evidence might matter depending circumstances, but gossip would not.”
Frank transformed legal answer into plan.
Then Parker placed folder.
“Your mother left memorandum with me.”
“What?”
“I was not permitted to release until initial accounting or if challenged.”
Why hidden? Could be estate planning instruction.
He opened.
Evelyn’s handwriting.
If Frank contests Claire’s role, provide this.
I stared.
My mother had anticipated him.
Then first sentence:
I am appointing Claire because she asks questions Frank considers disrespectful.
Daniel closed eyes.
Parker continued.
The memorandum did not accuse Frank of theft outright.
It said:
Several transfers from my accounts have occurred during periods when I have been too ill to review details. Frank says they are household and family expenses. I want independent accounting after my death before any beneficiary releases are signed.
There.
Mother ordered audit.
I had not invented.
Then:
Rachel has assisted Frank with invoices. Daniel does not appear aware of details and should not be placed between spouse and sister without records.
My mother knew exactly dynamic.
Daniel started crying.
Then final:
If everything is proper, the audit will protect Frank as much as estate. If it is not, love is not a reason to hide it.
May you like
Frank and Rachel had not just been trying to remove me.
They had been trying to stop the exact audit Evelyn requested before she died.
