Chapter 18 - My Father Without a Crutch

We met at a mediation center.
Frank arrived with cane.
Age and arthritis.
I noticed irony and hated myself for noticing.
He saw face.
“You can laugh.”
“I’m not.”
“I would.”
Maybe.
We sat.
No hug.
“Claire.”
“Dad.”
The word felt unfamiliar.
He cried.
“I’m sorry.”
“I read.”
Then I asked:
“Did Mom know you were taking money?”
“Some.”
“Which?”
“The management reimbursements early.”
“After revocation?”
“No.”
“Why continue?”
“Business was collapsing.”
“Why not tell us?”
“Pride.”
Then:
“You had $300k inheritance coming.”
“I didn’t know exact. And I needed money before.”
“So you stole time.”
“Yes.”
Then Rachel.
“Did you use her?”
“We used each other.”
Fair.
“She needed cash. I needed invoices and someone Daniel trusted.”
Then:
“Did you ever plan drug me before accident?”
“No.”
“After?”
“The idea to make your medication look bad started after.”
“Did you think I was addicted?”
“No.”
There.
“You told relatives.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make story believable.”
I stared.
That may hurt more than crutch.
He had seeded rumor.
Then:
“Did you know Rachel would put her pills in drink?”
“By party morning.”
“Why agree?”
“I wanted you embarrassed enough that Daniel would stop backing audit.”
“Embarrassed?”
“I didn’t understand how strong medication would affect.”
“But you wanted impairment.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you want me removed as executor permanently?”
“Yes.”
“Why Frank as successor, not Daniel?”
He looked down.
“Because I wanted control.”
Simple.
Then crutch.
“Why hit me?”
His face collapsed.
“I was angry because cake made plan look like disaster, and you kept saying Rachel pushed. I wanted you to stop talking.”
Not about apology.
Silence.
Then:
“Second strike?”
“I knew first was wrong.”
“And still?”
“Yes.”
“Kick?”
“I saw.”
I froze.
At trial he said did not see.
“You lied.”
He nodded.
“I saw Rachel kick your leg.”
“Why say no?”
“To reduce her assault and mine.”
He had not been charged with aiding kick. But lie under oath? That could be perjury. He is now admitting. We should be careful; if he committed perjury, could have legal implications. Maybe he means he saw at edge and wasn't sure then. Better not create new crime unresolved. Let's adjust: He says "I saw movement and realized after video it was kick, but at moment I claimed I didn't." Hmm. He testified he didn't see first shove, could see kick. In our trial chapter defense said he "said did not see kick" maybe. If now admits, could be perjury. Let's avoid direct:
"I saw her move toward your leg. I told myself I didn't know what she'd done."
Then okay.
Then:
“Why didn't stop?”
“Because she was doing what I wanted emotionally. Punishing you.”
There.
I breathed.
Then:
“Do you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Do you understand why those answers make me angry?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Love did not make you safe.”
“I know.”
Then he asked:
“Can I ever see Noah?”
“His decision.”
“I know.”
Then:
“Daniel?”
“His.”
Then:
“Me?”
I looked.
“This conversation is all I’m agreeing today.”
He nodded.
No bargaining.
At end he asked:
“Can I hug?”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“Okay.”
There.
I left.
No catharsis.
But one thing changed.
I no longer needed imagine why.
Control.
Pride.
Shame.
Punishment.
Not my defect.
Then Daniel met father separately months later.
They developed limited quarterly lunches.
Noah declined.
At seventeen, he changed mind once.
Wanted ask.
“Did you hate Aunt Claire?”
Frank:
“No.”
“Then why hit?”
“Because I treated disagreement as disrespect.”
Good.
“Did Mom help you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Did you blame me for tablet?”
“For a few minutes. Then I knew recording wasn’t cause.”
Noah:
“Would you do again?”
“No.”
“Why believe?”
“You don’t have to.”
Good.
Noah left.
Then told me:
“I don’t forgive yet.”
“Fine.”
At eighteen, graduation.
Frank asked through Daniel if could attend.
Noah said yes, but separate seat.
Rachel attended too.
First time all in one building.
No one caused scene.
No family photo unless Noah asks.
He did.
He wanted:
Him.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Me.
Grace, now Daniel’s wife perhaps.
Frank?
He hesitated.
Then:
“Yeah, Grandpa too.”
We stood.
Not reconciled.
Present.

The photo did not erase cake.
It showed time.
