Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN EVELYN FEARED
Evelyn had spent most of her life afraid of nobody.
She corrected restaurant managers.
Threatened school principals.
Called my board chairman once because I refused to pay for her cruise.
Yet one distorted female voice made her stop talking.
That mattered.
Her attorney eventually arranged a limited statement.
Name:
Margaret Sloan.
Seventy one.
Widow of Brigadier General Thomas Sloan.
Longtime military charity organizer.
Friend of Evelyn for twenty eight years.
The name meant nothing to me.
Then I saw her photograph.
I knew her.
Not personally.
She attended defense industry events.
Sat on nonprofit boards.
Introduced contractors to retired officers.
Never held government authority herself.
But she knew everyone.
Evelyn admired her.
“Margaret understands how this world works.”
She had said that hundreds of times.
Why would Margaret direct a procurement information scheme?

One of the accounts receiving money downstream from Valor Heritage Events.
My six thousand dollar transfers eventually touched her nonprofit.

Gavin planned to take it back at the gala.

Ryan’s debt could be declared cleared.
He could surrender the evidence.
That was his “release.”

Evelyn demanded I pay for the final step in removing evidence from my own house.

That almost felt ridiculous.

Military family housing.

That made investigation politically delicate.

Paid Lucas Trent.
Gavin Cole.
Several procurement consultants.
Margaret claimed all legitimate.
Then one payment:

Evelyn had been receiving money too.

Evelyn told me she needed my support.
Yet Margaret’s foundation paid her forty thousand three months before she began demanding six thousand monthly from me.
For what?
Event coordination.
No work product found yet.
So Evelyn was not broke.
She wanted my money because the pattern mattered.
Then text Margaret to Evelyn:
Start family support flow before Ryan uses Lisa’s access.

Why?
Margaret:
Because if anything surfaces, household money explains the consulting transfers.

Planning.
Evelyn knew more than Ryan claimed.

Lisa cannot suspect this is about her company.
Evelyn:
She thinks I’m greedy.

I sat with that.

Maybe she really was greedy.
Both.

If she refuses, Ryan handles her.
Evelyn:
He never can.
Margaret:
Then you will.
My skin went cold.
Was that instruction to assault?
Not necessarily.
Could mean pressure.
But Evelyn chose baton.
Then I asked investigators why Margaret cared about me specifically.
They found an old event photograph.
Three years earlier.
Margaret standing beside me at a defense cybersecurity conference.
I did not remember conversation.

Margaret had known exactly who I was long before Evelyn began demanding money.

Reason:

Household proximity.
They did not choose Ryan and then discover me.
They chose me and realized Ryan was available.
The marriage was not created for scheme.
We had been married years.
But once they saw the connection, they built around it.
Then Margaret’s old email to Lucas:
Do not recruit Lisa directly. She will report.
Lucas:
Use husband?
Margaret:
Only if he is already compromised.
He was.
Debt.
Baton.
Gavin.
Everything aligned.
Then one more email:
If Walker fails, mother is stronger.
Evelyn had not been backup financial pressure.
