Chapter 5 - THE FILE WITH MY NAME

I was not allowed to decrypt police evidence privately.
That would contaminate everything.
Instead, investigators obtained a forensic image.
My firm supplied an independent technical specialist who had never worked on my personal accounts.
I sat behind glass while they examined copies.
The LGRANT file opened first.
Not because I demanded it.
Because investigators believed it could establish motive for the assault and financial coercion.
Contents:
A photograph of my secured phone.
Taken in my kitchen.
Four months earlier.
My hand visible.
Ryan in the background reflection.
Another photograph:
My home office monitor.
Screen showing an authentication enrollment portal.
Another:
My company employee directory.
Then a text file.
LISA ACCESS ROUTES.
My throat tightened.
Listed:
Home network.
Mobile recovery.
Executive assistant.
Printer scan.
Spousal proximity.
Spousal proximity.
I stared at the phrase.
Someone had mapped my marriage as a technical vulnerability.
Then:
Primary human vector: R.W.
Ryan.
My husband.
Was he target or participant?
Next line:
Cooperative when compensated.
I closed my eyes.
The technician continued.
There were payment notes.
Not bank proof.
Internal tracking.
RW 1: $4,500.
RW 2: $6,000.
RW 3: Pending.
Dates.
First payment occurred two weeks after baton disappeared.
Second three months later.
Where did money come from?
Unknown.
Ryan’s personal account showed cash deposits around both dates.
I had never seen.
Then a note:
Mother channel stable.
What did that mean?
Evelyn.
Possibly.
Six months later, she began demanding monthly six thousand from me.
Maybe the money was not only greed.
Maybe someone needed a family payment stream.
Then the file included a voice memo.
Gavin Cole.
Recognizable from my home recording.
“Ryan keeps losing his nerve.”
Unknown man:
“Then use the mother.”
Gavin:
“She only understands money.”
Unknown:
“That is enough.”
The unknown man was not Gavin.
There was another person.
Higher in chain.
Gavin sounded subordinate.
Then:
“Lisa cannot know the baton exists.”
Gavin laughed.
“It’s in her living room.”
Unknown man:
“Exactly.”
Hide evidence in the victim’s home.
If discovered, whose property?
Mine.
Whose money funded related accounts?
Mine.
Whose credentials were targeted?
Mine.
A future investigator could look at the pattern and ask whether Lisa Grant was part of the scheme.
I felt sick.
They were not only using me.
They were building distance from themselves by wrapping everything around my life.
Then the device contained another file:
CHARITY GALA.
Guest list.
Fort Cavazos Military Family Heritage Benefit.
The legitimate charity itself appeared uninvolved.
But three table sponsors were highlighted.
Cedar Ridge Family Relief.
Valor Heritage Events.
Sentinel Supply Partners.
Evelyn’s shell.
Ryan’s entity.
The failed logistics company.
All scheduled at adjacent tables.
Why?
A meeting.
A handoff.
The five thousand Evelyn demanded from me was labeled in the baton notes:
TABLE BALANCE AND RELEASE FEE.
She was not buying a dress.
The five thousand was needed for something happening at the gala.
Release of what?
Then investigators opened the RWALKER file.
A scanned medical discharge summary.
Ryan’s discharge was real.
Back injury documented.
No fake disability.
That mattered.
Then another document.
Internal military interview.
Ryan had been questioned about missing baton.
He denied knowing where it was.
Signature:
Ryan Walker.
Date:
Thirteen months ago.
At that exact time, home security archives showed the baton already inside our display cabinet.
I found an old photograph from a Christmas dinner.
There it was behind us.
Ryan had lied to military investigators while stolen property sat ten feet from our dining table.
Then another note on the storage device:
RW WILL HOLD ITEM UNTIL DEBT CLEARED.
So the baton may have been collateral.
Ryan was not merely hiding evidence.
He was holding it because someone promised to clear his debt.
Then the unknown male voice appeared again.
“Once Lisa’s token works, Ryan gets his release.”
Release from debt?
May you like
Or something else?
Continue to the next part: The baton files show Ryan was promised something called a “release” if he helped obtain access through Lisa.
