Chapter 15 - SOMEONE WAS INSIDE BEFORE MY FAMILY

The timeline destroyed the story I had been telling myself.

I believed the breach began at home.

Ryan.

Evelyn.

Gavin.

The baton.

It did not.

Two years before Evelyn asked me for her first dollar, my executive account queried Archive C.

Search:

RAVEN WHITE.

PATRIOT CONTINUITY.

MARGARET SLOAN.

COVENANT REPORT.

I was in Denver that day.

Conference keynote.

Public footage.

My phone with me.

Authentication logs showed:

Corporate office.

Dallas.

Not remote.

A legitimate workstation session under my identity.

How?

Badge logs.

My badge had entered building.

Impossible.

It was with me.

Unless cloned.

Or someone used emergency executive access.

My CTO investigated.

One emergency access custodian had authority to impersonate executives for disaster recovery testing.

Name:

Michael Grant.

My older brother.

No.

Wait. We should avoid random family twist unseeded. Better an internal employee introduced? Need seed earlier maybe CFO Karen Wells, CTO unnamed. Could reveal COO but not seeded. We need open, not answer. So system account "Executive Continuity Admin" used by unknown, with audit signed by now-departed security director. Good.

The session came through:

EXEC_CONTINUITY_ADMIN.

Approved by:

Former security director, Thomas Bell.

He left my company eighteen months ago.

Where did he go?

Redwood Defense Systems.

Not Margaret’s foundation.

Could be legitimate career move.

He currently reported indirectly to Lucas Trent.

Connection.

Thomas Bell’s attorney said he did not remember session.

Audit ticket:

Legacy archive validation.

Requester:

Lisa Grant.

Fake ticket.

Who submitted?

Service desk employee no longer at company.

We had not yet traced.

The scheme may have had an internal corporate route before Ryan became useful.

That meant my husband was not the doorway.

He was the backup doorway after another path became risky.

My family had been exploited because somebody was already inside my professional ecosystem.

Then my CTO found an email from two years earlier.

Thomas Bell to Lucas Trent:

Archive request failed. Lisa has legal hold restrictions.

Lucas:

Can you get her approval?

Thomas:

Not without her knowing.

Lucas:

Then leave it.

Months later:

Lucas to Gavin:

Walker connection confirmed.

There.

They abandoned the corporate impersonation route.

Then discovered I was married to Ryan.

Family became Plan B.

The baton theft occurred after.

They created pressure.

Everything connected.

Who told Lucas I was Ryan’s wife?

Margaret through Evelyn.

But Lucas already knew my name from Archive C.

That was why he reacted when Margaret said:

“Lisa earns thirty thousand and works defense cyber.”

They found the human bridge they had been waiting for.

Then the immediate domestic story moved forward.

I filed for divorce.

Ryan did not contest separation.

He remained under investigation for unauthorized access, possession of stolen property, and related conduct.

Final charges would depend on prosecutors.

Evelyn faced the assault case.

The recording existed.

Medical evidence existed.

Her attorney still argued she acted during a mutual confrontation.

The courts would decide.

Margaret Sloan’s foundation underwent financial and governance review.

The charity continued helping families under independent interim leadership.

I did not want legitimate beneficiaries punished because leaders had hidden misconduct behind them.

Lucas Trent was removed from Redwood pending investigation.

Gavin Cole remained missing.

That bothered everyone.

Douglas Reed was cleared of several suspicions after original logs authenticated, though investigators reviewed his off procedure evidence handling.

Nathan Brooks cooperated.

Peter Lawson recused.

No one walked away clean simply because another person was worse.

I returned home once with police standby.

The baton was gone into evidence.

The display cabinet looked absurdly empty.

Ryan’s challenge coins.

Photographs.

Our wedding picture.

I took the picture down.

Not dramatically.

Placed it inside a box.

Eight years had happened.

I would not pretend they had not.

But they were finished.

Then I opened our joint desk.

Inside was a folder.

Ryan’s handwriting.

LISA BUSINESS.

My stomach tightened.

Bank statements.

Old articles.

Conference programs.

Then a printed email.

Date:

Three years earlier.

From:

Margaret Sloan.

To:

Ryan Walker.

Subject:

Military Family Cybersecurity Panel.

Ryan,

Your wife would be an excellent speaker. I would love an introduction.

Normal.

I vaguely remembered declining.

Then Ryan’s response:

Lisa hates charity politics. Better not.

Margaret:

Understood. Keep me in mind if she changes her mind.

Three years.

She knew I was Ryan’s wife then.

That contradicted the story that she only discovered recently through Evelyn.

Maybe she knew connection all along.

Then why did messages later say “mother confirms wife is Grant”?

Perhaps confirmation of identity.

Or pretending not to know.

Then another email a year later.

Margaret:

How is Ryan’s Sentinel investment?

Evelyn had forwarded Ryan’s financial trouble to her.

Margaret knew debt early.

The opportunity may have been watched for years.

I called Bennett.

She said:

“Preserve it.”

Then my secured phone received an encrypted alert.

Not from my company.

From the same emergency endpoint Gavin had once used.

Message:

YOU ARE STILL LOOKING AT SLOAN.

I stared.

Second line:

SLOAN DID NOT START ARCHIVE C.

True.

Covenant report already suggested Raven White came first.

Then:

ASK WHO PAID CHARLES MERCER TO INVESTIGATE PATRIOT CONTINUITY.

My heart accelerated.

I opened the original Covenant engagement letter.

Client:

Patriot Continuity Foundation.

Signed by Margaret Sloan.

But payment source?

Different.

Invoice remittance:

Northbridge Risk Trust.

Unknown.

Why would an outside trust pay for Margaret’s internal investigation?

Karen traced old public records.

Northbridge funded compliance reviews for defense suppliers.

Board member twelve years ago:

Colonel Robert Walker.

Ryan’s father.

Evelyn’s late husband.

I sat down.

Robert Walker had financed the investigation that created Archive C.

That meant Ryan’s family was connected to the original evidence years before Ryan and I were married.

Did Evelyn know?

Unknown.

Did Ryan know?

Unknown.

Then another document.

Charles Mercer’s confidential note:

R. Walker requested independent review because he believes Sloan’s foundation is being used by contractor Raven White.

Robert Walker had been trying to expose the problem.

Not participate.

He may have been the person who hired Charles.

That changed Evelyn’s late husband from background memory into the man who helped create the evidence everyone later tried to erase.

Then why did Evelyn help Margaret?

Maybe she never knew what Robert had done.

Or maybe Margaret told her a different story after his death.

I looked at the ceremonial gala invitation still photographed in evidence.

Robert Walker’s name appeared on the memorial donor wall.

Margaret and Evelyn had remained friends after he died.

Did Margaret keep Evelyn close because she loved her?

Or because Robert had known about Raven White?

Then Bennett called.

“We found Gavin.”

My heart stopped.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Outside El Paso.”

“Did he talk?”

“Through counsel.”

“What did he say?”

Bennett paused.

“Gavin says he did not steal the baton for Margaret.”

“Then who?”

“He says Raven White ordered it.”

The alias from twelve years ago.

The person Charles Mercer never identified.

“Does Gavin know who that is?”

“He says he met Raven once.”

“Name?”

“He refuses until a deal is discussed.”

Of course.

Then Bennett added:

“But he gave us one photograph to prove Raven is real.”

My secured phone received it through the evidence portal.

A restaurant.

Gavin.

Lucas Trent.

A third person sitting with his back to camera.

Date:

Sixteen months ago.

Before the baton theft.

On the table was a folder.

My company logo.

The third person’s hand rested beside it.

Wedding ring.

Silver watch.

Army academy ring.

Then one detail made my skin go cold.

The person was wearing the same engraved signet ring I had seen in old photographs of Colonel Robert Walker.

Ryan’s dead father.

Impossible.

Robert had been dead six years.

I enlarged the photograph.

Not Robert.

Someone wearing his ring.

Someone who had access to his personal effects.

Who inherited that ring?

Ryan told me years ago:

“It disappeared after Dad’s funeral.”

Evelyn said she never found it.

Now it sat on the hand of the man Gavin called Raven White.

The assault case had exposed Ryan.

The baton had exposed Gavin.

Archive C had exposed Margaret’s old cover up.

But the oldest person in the chain was still hidden.

And whoever he was had been carrying a dead colonel’s ring while planning to use my family to reach an archive Robert Walker himself helped create.

My phone vibrated again.

Unknown encrypted sender.

One final message.

LISA, DO NOT ASK EVELYN WHO HAS THE RING.

ASK HER WHY ROBERT MADE TWO OF THEM.

I stared at the screen.

Two rings.

One missing.

One never mentioned.

Evelyn had spent months pretending she wanted my money.

Ryan had spent a year pretending the baton belonged to him.

Margaret had spent twelve years pretending Patriot Continuity was only a charity.

And now the one object nobody had questioned suggested Colonel Robert Walker left behind a second line of evidence before his death.

I looked at the photograph again.

At the stranger’s hand.

At the ring.

Then I realized the engraving visible along its edge was not Robert Walker’s initials.

It was mine.

L.G.

Lisa Grant.

The ring had been made for me.

Years before I ever met Ryan.

May you like

And I had no idea why.

Continue to the next part: Lisa must uncover why Ryan’s late father commissioned a second military signet ring engraved with her initials years before she joined the Walker family, and whether “Raven White” has been watching her far longer than anyone admitted.
