Chapter 10 - WHY THEY CHOSE FAMILY

People ask why victims stay around abuse.
As if abuse arrives wearing a label.
Evelyn did not begin with a baton.
She began with comments.
“You work too much.”
Then guilt.
“Ryan gave his health to this country.”
Then money.
“Military families take care of each other.”
Then entitlement.
“Six thousand is nothing to you.”
Then touch.
A wrist squeeze.
A shove past me in the kitchen.
A glass thrown into the sink.
Every incident small enough to rationalize.
Ryan:
“You know Mom.”
“Don’t escalate.”
“She had a hard life.”
“Keep the peace.”
That was the vulnerability Margaret Sloan understood.
Not that I was weak.
That I was patient.
My professional instinct was confrontation.
My family instinct was endurance.
She chose the second.
The profile file said:
LISA GRANT: High resistance to external coercion. Elevated tolerance for domestic obligation. Protects spouse reputation. Avoids public conflict involving military family.
Accurate.
I hated it.
Then another line:
Escalation through mother likely to delay reporting.
Exactly what happened.
I tolerated six months.
If Evelyn had sent one suspicious email asking for credentials, I would have reported in sixty seconds.
She asked for money and respect.
I called it family.
That was how they entered.
Then Redwood’s internal audit uncovered Lucas’s objective.
He wanted more than vendor assessment summaries.
Upcoming bid:
Orion Mobility Sustainment Contract.
Hundreds of millions over several years.
Redwood was one bidder.
Two competitors used cybersecurity vendors whose assessment data touched systems my company administered.
Lucas wanted to know:
Which competitor had unresolved compliance findings.
When remediation deadlines occurred.
Which assessor notes might threaten eligibility.
With that information, he could sell strategic advantage.
Could he alter government decisions?
No evidence.
Could he manipulate private bidding strategy and profit?
Yes.
He had side agreements with two investment groups betting on supplier valuations.
This was commercial corruption around defense contracting, not some cinematic plan to steal missile codes.
That made it more believable.
And more disgusting.
Then the baton device showed a folder:
ORION.
Inside:
Redwood data.
Competitor data.
My downloaded assessments.
And a memo:
Final source requires LISA MASTER TOKEN.
They had not gotten the full token.
Only backup access.
Why need master token?
To retrieve encrypted evidence history.
My platform preserved previous assessment versions.
If Lucas altered or selectively leaked current summaries, historical records could prove.
The master token could access audit trails.
They wanted ability to see and possibly delete? Our system prevented deletion without secondary authorization. But they could learn what evidence existed.
That was why the scheme continued after their first successful login.
They needed more.
Then my secured phone.
At gala, Ryan was supposed to get me to attend?
Messages:
Evelyn:
She says she has Dallas travel.
Margaret:
Cancel it.
Ryan:
She won’t.
Margaret:
Create family emergency.
They planned to get me physically to gala.
Why?
A device near donor reception could clone a session handshake from my secured phone if I authenticated nearby.
Not magic remote hack.
They needed proximity and a malicious WiFi certificate plus my interaction.
My company security likely would still block.
But Gavin wanted to try.
Evelyn’s extra five thousand paid for sponsor credentials that gave access to secure event network.
When I refused to pay, their plan threatened collapse.
Her rage was partly panic.
Then the baton strike.
My secured phone emergency command caused police arrival.
Their careful family pressure turned into recorded assault.
The system broke because Evelyn lost control.
Then Margaret Sloan contacted investigators voluntarily.
With attorney.
She denied directing illegal access.
Claimed messages referred to legitimate fundraising and family financial arrangements.
Some phrases looked awful.
She offered explanations.
“Use mother” meant use Evelyn as event organizer.
“Lisa master token” not her phrase.
That came from Lucas.
“High tolerance for domestic obligation” profile?
She denied authoring.
Metadata showed document created on Gavin’s laptop.
Maybe Gavin profiled me himself.
Then the female voice?
Voice analysis suggested Margaret but not conclusive.
She denied.
Evelyn identified her.
Evelyn’s credibility weak.
Case remained.
Then Margaret said something unexpected.
“You are investigating the wrong reason Ryan kept the baton.”
Investigators asked.
She answered:
“He was not protecting Gavin.”
“Then who?”
“Lisa.”
I almost laughed when Bennett told me.
Then Margaret produced a message.
Ryan to Margaret.
Date:
Nine months ago.
If I give Reed the baton, Lisa’s name is in it. They’ll think she was involved.
Margaret:
Then keep it until we clean her name.
Ryan:
How?
Margaret:
We remove the Lisa files.
I stopped.
Ryan may have hidden evidence partly because he discovered someone had planted my name.
But instead of telling me, he chose to “clean” it himself.
May you like
And in doing so, became exactly the person the evidence described.
Continue to the next part: Ryan claims he originally kept the baton because he discovered someone had already inserted Lisa’s name into the hidden files and feared she would be framed.
