Chapter 11 - HE SAID HE WAS PROTECTING ME

Ryan’s new statement changed nothing about what he did.

But it changed why some of it began.

He said Gavin handed him the baton without revealing contents.

Ryan later opened the handle.

Found encrypted module.

Used an old project reader to view unencrypted index.

Saw:

LGRANT.

My name.

He panicked.

He knew I had worked with defense suppliers.

He believed Reed’s investigation might sweep me in.

So he contacted Margaret Sloan.

Why her?

She was a respected military community figure.

Ryan trusted her father’s old reputation.

Margaret told him:

“Do not turn it in until we know what Lisa file contains.”

Bad advice.

He followed.

Then Gavin appeared.

Said Reed had planted names to protect himself.

Again, Ryan followed whoever gave him the easiest explanation.

Then debt pressure.

Then money.

Then illegal access.

At some point “protecting Lisa” became excuse.

Ryan admitted that.

Through counsel:

“I told myself I was fixing it. Then I was just trying not to get caught.”

That was the first honest sentence from him.

Could he have saved our marriage by telling me nine months ago?

Probably.

Even after baton possession.

Even after first lie.

Maybe.

After opening my safe and stealing credentials?

No.

After standing while Evelyn hit me?

Absolutely not.

Intent can explain beginning.

Choices define ending.

Then investigators verified part of Ryan’s claim.

The LGRANT file was created before Gavin supposedly gave baton to him.

Timestamp:

Twenty hours after baton disappeared.

Ryan had not yet taken physical possession according to messages.

Who added it?

Gavin?

Likely.

But device access log showed credential:

DREED_ADMIN.

Douglas Reed’s administrator key.

Reed denied.

Could be copied.

How?

Project system held admin certificates.

Gavin had technical access.

Could clone? Perhaps.

Then LGRANT file creation occurred from a workstation at Fort Cavazos.

Building:

Logistics modernization office.

Badge access:

Three people that night.

Gavin Cole.

Catherine Doyle? She was Redwood, not base.

And Captain Nathan Brooks.

New name.

Nathan Brooks supervised civilian project integration.

Ryan knew him.

Reed knew him.

What happened to Brooks?

Transferred to another installation.

Left Army two years later.

Now worked for:

Patriot Continuity Foundation.

Margaret Sloan’s organization.

That connected foundation directly to old baton event.

Brooks joined through attorney.

Denied touching storage device.

Said Gavin asked him to stay late for server maintenance.

He left at 9:10.

LGRANT file created 9:24.

Gavin remained.

Badge log.

So Gavin likely created.

Then why use Reed admin?

To frame Reed.

Pattern.

Reed liability package.

Fake Reed email.

Copied admin credential.

Gavin wanted any discovered device to point toward Reed and me.

Why me?

Because my company access was future target.

He preloaded narrative before recruiting Ryan.

That meant Ryan’s name in device may also have been planned.

Gavin built leverage package first.

Then stole baton.

Then handed it to indebted Ryan.

This was not opportunistic after theft.

Ryan was selected in advance.

Who told Gavin about Ryan’s debt?

Sentinel Supply Partners records.

Gavin was partner.

He created some debt conditions himself.

He encouraged Ryan to invest more.

Promised upcoming contract.

Contract never existed.

Could Gavin have intentionally trapped Ryan financially?

Messages suggested.

Gavin:

Put in another 30. We’re close.

Ryan:

Lisa will kill me.

Gavin:

Then don’t tell her.

Months later:

Debt is leverage.

That line sent to Lucas.

Ryan had been cultivated.

Again.

Not innocent.

But selected.

Then we traced Evelyn.

Did Margaret intentionally cultivate her too?

Years of charity friendship predated scheme.

But after Ryan’s debt:

Margaret increased contact.

Invitations.

Compliments.

“Military widow of distinction.”

Evelyn loved status.

Then asked about my income.

Evelyn bragged.

Thirty thousand a month.

Defense clients.

There.

Margaret learned.

Then told Gavin:

Mother confirms wife is Grant.

They connected identity.

So sequence:

Gavin knew Lisa Grant existed as vendor contact.

Did not initially know she was Ryan’s wife.

Margaret learned through Evelyn.

Then the target structure snapped together.

Family became access path.

Then investigators found a file in Margaret’s charity archive.

Not hidden.

Old donor research.

My name appeared two years earlier.

Under:

Potential board candidate.

Margaret had once considered inviting me onto charity cybersecurity committee.

Why did she not?

Handwritten note:

Too independent.

I almost smiled.

At least one assessment had been correct.

Then Bennett called.

“Lisa, there is something else in the baton.”

“Another file?”

“No.”

“Physical.”

Under the storage module, evidence technicians found a tiny folded strip of paper.

Handwritten.

Not Reed.

Not Gavin.

Three words:

LISA IS CLEAN.

Signed:

N.B.

May you like

Nathan Brooks.

Continue to the next part: A hidden note inside the baton claims Lisa was innocent and is signed with the initials of the Army officer who later joined Margaret Sloan’s foundation.
