Chapter 8 - REED’S COMPANY

Reed did not run.

He did not call the payment fake.

He said:

“Mason Bridge is mine.”

Then explained.

After retirement, he opened a consulting company.

Normal.

Veteran owned logistics compliance.

He worked with suppliers.

One client hired Lucas Trent as subcontractor.

The $125,000 was not payment to Lucas personally.

It paid his firm for a twelve month procurement modernization project.

Contract existed.

Invoices.

Deliverables.

Bank records.

Legitimate on surface.

That was the danger of real networks.

Bad actors work inside normal business.

Money can be both ordinary and incriminating depending context.

Then Reed disclosed something he should have told investigators earlier.

Lucas had approached him ten months after the baton disappeared.

Asked whether Reed still possessed copies of export logs.

Reed said no.

Lucas offered:

“Consulting work.”

Reed accepted one legitimate project without realizing Lucas may have been testing him.

Why hide?

Embarrassment.

It made him look compromised.

“Did Lucas know Mason Bridge was yours?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Gavin worked with him?”

“No.”

“Did you know Ryan?”

“Of course.”

Then I asked:

“Why did the baton storage contain a fake Reed email address?”

He looked sick.

“To make me the fall guy.”

Likely.

But we needed more.

Investigators reviewed Mason Bridge files.

Reed had independently documented irregular supplier outreach.

He kept notes.

One name appeared repeatedly:

Catherine Doyle.

Procurement compliance officer.

Redwood Defense Systems.

Lucas’s colleague.

She had flagged Lucas for unusual vendor requests eight months earlier.

Then withdrew complaint.

Why?

She received anonymous package containing photographs of her son using drugs at college.

Blackmail.

She stayed silent.

This network did not rely only on money.

It found pressure points.

Ryan’s debt.

Evelyn’s greed.

Catherine’s son.

My marriage.

Each person had a lever.

Who selected levers?

Lucas?

Maybe.

But his records contained profile documents he did not create.

File titles:

WALKER FAMILY.

DOYLE FAMILY.

REED RETIREMENT.

Behavioral vulnerability notes.

Someone was systematically mapping people.

That moved beyond simple contract theft.

Then investigators searched Gavin’s devices.

One spreadsheet.

PRESSURE CHANNELS.

Ryan:

Debt and spouse income.

Evelyn:

Status and money.

Catherine:

Son.

Reed:

Reputation.

Lisa:

Marriage and federal client exposure.

My name.

Pressure channel:

Protect company.

Secondary:

Protect military community reputation.

They knew exactly what would make me quiet if scandal emerged.

Only I had not stayed quiet.

The baton to my face broke the script.

Then another column:

Controller.

Most entries:

LT.

Lucas Trent.

Mine:

UNKNOWN.

Someone else had profiled me.

Not Lucas.

Then my secured phone logs showed an old incoming message from seven months earlier.

I had ignored it as spam.

Subject:

SECURITY REVIEW.

Body:

Your household is an unmonitored attack surface.

I had laughed.

Forwarded it to my team as an example of social engineering.

Sender later vanished.

Now forensic trace linked domain to an account that had also sent files to Gavin.

Was it a warning?

Or test?

Then Bennett called.

“We found something under the baton grip.”

“I thought the storage device was the thing.”

“There was another engraving beneath it.”

Not property number.

Words scratched manually.

D.R. 9/14.

Reed said he did not carve it.

Date?

September 14.

What happened then?

His calendar.

Meeting with Ryan.

Three days before baton disappeared.

Reed had forgotten exact date.

Now he remembered.

Ryan came to him privately.

Said Gavin had approached him about selling supplier data.

Reed told him:

“Stay away and document everything.”

Ryan had been a potential whistleblower before he became participant.

He knew danger.

Then what changed?

The next day, Ryan’s Sentinel Supply investment account received a demand:

Pay $84,000 within thirty days or litigation.

Debt.

Two days later baton disappeared.

Gavin gave it to Ryan.

Blackmail began.

Reed whispered:

“I should have protected him better.”

I shook my head.

“You warned him.”

“He was scared.”

“He still opened my safe.”

Both true.

Then investigators enhanced the original home recording.

Behind Lucas’s voice was another person on speakerphone.

Faint.

Female.

She said:

“The wife is too clean. Do not contaminate her until we have the full token.”

Nobody recognized the voice.

Except Evelyn.

During her second interview, she heard the clip.

Her face reportedly collapsed.

She said:

“I know her.”

“Who?”

May you like

Evelyn refused to answer without an attorney.

Continue to the next part: Evelyn recognizes the unidentified woman directing Lucas but suddenly refuses to name her.
