Chapter 8 - The Dead Man’s Final Call

The transfer carried Richard Whitmore’s biometric signature.
Fingerprint.
Voice approval.
Retinal confirmation.
All recorded six hours earlier.
Naomi contacted the private bank.
Its representative refused to stop the transaction because the authorization satisfied every security requirement.
“That is impossible,” Daniel said. “My father was cremated.”
Lucas looked genuinely frightened.
“This is not Mom.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she believed Dad’s emergency profile had been deleted.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You knew the profile existed.”
“Dad created a continuity system. If he became incapacitated, a recorded executive model could authorize essential transactions.”
Naomi understood.
“An artificial identity based on Richard’s biometric data.”
Lucas nodded.
“It was supposed to operate only for seventy two hours after a verified emergency.”
“Who activated it?”
Lucas looked toward the guardianship order.
“The system required two family approvals.”
Margaret and Lucas had both provided access years earlier.
But the current command came from outside the family network.
The receiving account was registered to Northstar Preservation Limited, a company formed three days after Richard’s death.
Daniel opened his father’s archived call records.
On the night Richard died, he placed one final call from the mansion library.
The number belonged to Aurelia Vale.
Elena stared at the screen.
“My mother was already dead.”
The call lasted eleven minutes.
Naomi recovered the audio from the estate server.
Richard’s voice played first.
“I found the second ledger.”
A woman answered.
Her voice was distorted.
“You took long enough.”
Elena sat upright despite the pain.
The rhythm of the voice was familiar.
Her mother used to pause before every important sentence in the same way.
Richard continued.
“Margaret knows Elena is connected to the trust.”
“Then move her.”
“She will not trust me.”
“She should not.”
“Aurelia…”
Daniel stopped the recording.
No one spoke.
Richard had addressed the woman as Aurelia eighteen years after her reported death.
Elena’s contractions became stronger.
Dr. Mitchell asked everyone except Daniel to leave.
Elena refused.
“No more conversations about my life behind closed doors.”
The recording continued.
Richard said Margaret had discovered the restitution trust and planned to locate Elena.
Aurelia instructed him not to approach her daughter.
“Why?” Richard asked.
“Because Elena believes I died. That belief is the only reason she is still alive.”
The call ended with Richard promising to create a financial escape route called Northstar.
The same company receiving two hundred and twelve million dollars.
Daniel looked toward Naomi.
“My father knew Aurelia was alive.”
“If the recording is genuine.”
Elena’s eyes filled with anger.
“My mother let me bury an empty coffin.”
Naomi checked the death file.
The body from Aurelia’s accident had been identified through dental records provided by a Whitmore family dentist.
The same dentist later served on Margaret’s medical foundation board.
Everything could have been falsified.
Daniel contacted the estate security archive.
A camera outside the mansion showed Richard leaving the library after the call. He carried the silver basin.
Twenty minutes later, Margaret entered.
She brought him tea.
Richard collapsed before midnight.
Margaret called an ambulance forty minutes after his first signs of distress.
By then, he was dead.
Naomi looked toward Lucas.
“Did you know?”
Lucas shook his head.
“I thought the heart attack was natural.”
Daniel watched the video again.
Margaret remained beside Richard’s body while paramedics arrived.
She did not cry.
She searched his coat.
Richard had hidden something inside the silver basin before drinking the tea.
The key and microfilm.
His death had not been a coincidence.
A hospital nurse entered.
“Federal agents arrested Margaret at the mansion.”
Daniel felt no relief.
The active transfer continued.
Northstar’s account required a living controller.
Someone had accessed Richard’s executive identity and was moving the company’s liquid reserves moments before Elena became majority owner.
Naomi enlarged the beneficiary information.
The account holder was Aurelia Vale.
A live identity confirmation had been completed that morning at a private bank in Washington.
The bank camera showed a woman with silver streaks in her dark hair.
Elena leaned toward the screen.
The woman turned slightly.
A scar crossed the side of her face.
Elena recognized it.
Her mother had received that scar while pulling her away from a kitchen fire when she was seven.
May you like
Aurelia Vale was alive.
Continue to the next part: Elena must decide whether the mother who abandoned her is rescuing the company’s money or stealing it before her grandchild is born.
