Chapter 4 - The Guardianship Papers

The forged signature looked perfect.
Daniel knew immediately why.
It had not been drawn by hand.
It had been created from a digital signing profile connected to his banking identity.
Only three devices could access that profile.
His encrypted phone.
His office terminal.
And a secure tablet stored at Whitmore Medical Center.
The hospital belonged to the family foundation.
Margaret chaired its board.
“When was the tablet last used?” Daniel asked.
The compliance director checked the banking log.
“Six weeks ago.”
Daniel remembered the date.
He had returned from London with a severe fever. Margaret insisted he spend one night at the private clinic rather than risk exposing Elena during pregnancy.
A nurse gave him medication.
He slept for fourteen hours.
“My fingerprint and facial scan were taken while I was unconscious.”
Lucas looked toward the window.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You were at the clinic.”
“I visited you.”
“You copied my biometric profile.”
“No.”
The investigator connected Lucas’s phone to a forensic reader.
A deleted photograph appeared.
Daniel lay asleep in a hospital bed while Lucas held the secure tablet near his face.
Another image showed Daniel’s hand pressed against the fingerprint reader.
Elena covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at his brother.
“You did this while I was unconscious.”
“Mom said the trust had to remain inside the family.”
“So you forged my authority.”
“You would have signed if you understood what was at stake.”
“You planned to declare my wife incompetent and control my child.”
Lucas’s voice rose.
“You think this is about one house and some bank accounts? Aurelia Vale’s claim can take fifty one percent of the company. Thousands of employees could lose everything.”
“No,” Naomi said. “You and Margaret could lose control. The employees remain protected.”
Lucas turned toward her.
“You have always hated this family.”
“I watched your father spend his final year trying to repair what your mother destroyed.”
Margaret slapped the banking folder shut.
“Richard was confused before he died.”
“He was not confused.”
“He accused everyone.”
“He accused you.”
Silence settled across the office.
Daniel looked at Naomi.
“What did my father believe she had done?”
Naomi hesitated.
Margaret moved first.
She seized the folder and tried to throw it into the fireplace.
Daniel caught her wrist.
For the first time in his life, he saw fear inside his mother’s eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Let go of me.”
“What happened to Dad?”
“He had a heart attack.”
“Why are you afraid of his records?”
“Because dead men leave chaos behind and call it justice.”
The federal investigator took the folder from her.
Lucas slipped toward the hallway.
Elena saw him.
“He has another phone.”
Daniel turned.
Lucas ran.
He reached the foyer before Daniel caught him near the silver basin. They crashed against the staircase.
A small black device fell from Lucas’s pocket and slid through the water.
It was not a phone.
It was a remote server key.
The investigator picked it up.
“This controls an external storage account.”
Lucas struggled beneath Daniel’s grip.
“You do not know what will happen if you open it.”
Daniel released him only when federal agents took his arms.
The server key contained scheduled releases of the edited videos.
At six that evening, a file would be sent to the Whitmore board, several newspapers, and a family court judge.
The video portrayed Elena as violent and unstable.
Another file showed Daniel shouting in the foyer after the beginning of the recording had been removed.
The title read:
Chief Executive Attacks Elderly Mother During Wife’s Mental Breakdown.
Lucas had prepared to destroy Daniel’s credibility alongside Elena’s.
“You planned to remove both of us,” Daniel said.
Lucas stopped pretending.
“You would never turn against her after the baby came.”
“Her?”
“Mom.”
Margaret looked at him with contempt.
“You weak little fool.”
Lucas laughed bitterly.
“You said we would run the company together.”
“I said you would be rewarded.”
The son she used finally understood he had never been her partner.
Naomi checked the external server.
“There is another folder.”
It contained payments from an account controlled by Margaret to Elena’s prenatal clinic.
Daniel recognized the clinic’s name.
Margaret had recommended it personally.
Each payment was labeled maternal compliance.
Elena touched her stomach.
May you like
“What did they pay the clinic to do?”
Continue to the next part: Elena’s medical records reveal someone has been secretly giving her medication that could cause confusion and premature labor.
