Chapter 6 - The Medicine in Elena’s Tea

Margaret did not resist when investigators escorted her into the library.

She sat in Richard’s old chair as though she were hosting a business meeting rather than facing arrest.

Daniel remained standing.

Naomi placed the founding certificates on the table.

“You forged Aurelia’s transfer.”

Margaret looked at the papers.

“Richard signed the final version.”

“Because you lied to him.”

“Business is built on the information people choose to believe.”

“You tried to kill Aurelia.”

Margaret lifted one eyebrow.

“That recording proves an argument.”

“It proves you knew her car had been sabotaged.”

“It proves Richard made an accusation.”

Daniel watched his mother carefully.

She had spent his childhood teaching him that emotion was weakness. Every punishment arrived in a calm voice. Every cruelty was described as discipline.

He now recognized the same control in the way she discussed Elena.

“Why did you allow me to marry her?” he asked.

Margaret turned toward him.

“Because your legal partnership made her assets reachable.”

Under the Whitmore marital agreement, Daniel could act on Elena’s behalf if she became medically incapacitated.

Margaret planned to use Daniel’s forged signature to activate that authority.

The edited videos would convince a judge Elena was unstable.

The sedative would create real confusion.

If Elena entered premature labor, Margaret’s clinic would document a psychiatric crisis.

Daniel would appear overwhelmed and temporarily transfer authority to Lucas.

“Once the trust moved into Lucas’s control,” Naomi said, “you would have merged it into the family holding company.”

Margaret nodded.

“I would have restored what belonged to Richard’s children.”

“It belonged to Aurelia,” Daniel said.

“She was a bookkeeper with ambition.”

“She built the company.”

“She built spreadsheets. Richard built relationships.”

Daniel looked toward the sealed evidence.

For the first time, he understood that Margaret did not merely hate Elena.

She hated the idea that a woman she considered socially inferior had created the fortune Margaret spent her life claiming.

A federal agent entered carrying a report from Elena’s clinic.

The doctor who signed the false psychiatric declaration had received three hundred thousand dollars from a Lucas controlled company.

A nurse admitted placing sedative drops into Elena’s evening vitamin drink.

She said Margaret told her the medication was approved.

Daniel’s phone rang.

Dr. Mitchell’s name appeared.

“Elena is having contractions.”

He stopped breathing.

“She is only thirty four weeks.”

“The contractions may stop, but we need to monitor her closely.”

Daniel left the mansion immediately.

Margaret called after him.

“If that baby is born tonight, the transfer completes.”

He turned.

The words had escaped before she could stop them.

“What transfer?”

Margaret’s expression closed again.

Daniel walked back.

“What happens when my son is born?”

Naomi searched the trust documents on her tablet.

The original terms were more extensive than the summary Richard left.

Aurelia’s fifty one percent voting interest remained suspended until Elena produced a living descendant or reached age thirty five.

Elena was thirty two.

The birth of the baby would activate the shares immediately.

Control of Whitmore Holdings would pass from Daniel’s family to Elena.

Margaret and Lucas would lose their board authority.

Every family account secured against those shares would be reviewed.

Years of hidden withdrawals would become visible.

“That is why the medication mattered,” Naomi said. “Margaret needed the baby born only after the guardianship order was approved.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You were controlling the timing of my child’s birth.”

“I was protecting the company.”

“You could have killed them.”

“The dosage was low.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

For the first time, Daniel raised no voice.

Margaret seemed more disturbed by his calmness than his anger.

At the hospital, Elena lay on her side while monitors tracked the baby’s heartbeat.

Daniel entered slowly.

She looked at him.

“What did she do?”

He told her everything.

The trust.

The forged documents.

The clinic payments.

The birth condition.

Elena listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked toward the monitor.

“My baby has been treated like a bank key before he has even taken a breath.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“I will sign away every claim I have.”

“This is not about what you will sign.”

“I know.”

“Your mother believed my body belonged to the company.”

“I know.”

“And you need me to believe your protection is different.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Elena reached for his hand, then stopped before touching it.

The hospital door opened.

Lucas entered wearing a stolen medical badge.

He held a copy of the guardianship order.

“The judge approved it ten minutes ago.”

Continue to the next part: Lucas arrives with a court order declaring Elena mentally unstable while the contractions grow stronger.
