Chapter 2 - The Videos Lucas Never Meant to Show

Elena stared at the name inside the folder.
Aurelia Vale.
It meant nothing to her.
Her mother had been Isabel Bennett, a quiet bookkeeper who raised Elena in a small apartment outside Baltimore. Isabel packed lunches before sunrise, repaired her own clothes, and refused to speak about the years before Elena’s birth.
She died in a highway accident when Elena was fourteen.
At least that was what Elena had always believed.
Naomi removed an old photograph from the folder.
A younger version of Daniel’s father, Richard Whitmore, stood outside a warehouse beside a dark haired woman wearing a navy suit.
The woman had Elena’s eyes.
Beneath the photograph was the original name of the company.
WHITMORE VALE TRANSPORT AND STORAGE.
Daniel took the picture.
“My father founded Whitmore Holdings.”
“He founded it with Aurelia Vale,” Naomi said. “She provided the first shipping contracts, designed the accounting structure, and owned fifty one percent of the original company.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“That woman stole from Richard.”
Naomi looked at her.
“That is the story you paid to preserve.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“I will not be insulted inside my own home.”
The bank compliance director glanced at the wet floor.
“According to the current property record, this home belongs to the Aurelia Vale Restitution Trust.”
Daniel looked at the marble walls, the staircase, and the family portraits.
“What?”
“Your father transferred the property six months before his death. The trust remained inactive until one of two conditions occurred.”
Naomi looked toward Elena’s stomach.
“The birth of Aurelia’s first grandchild.”
Then she looked at the bruises visible beneath Elena’s damp sleeves.
“Or credible evidence that Aurelia’s beneficiary was being threatened by a Whitmore family member.”
Lucas moved toward the stairs.
“This is ridiculous.”
Daniel held up the phone he had taken.
“You recorded the evidence yourself.”
Lucas stopped.
He tried to smile.
“You do not know what those videos show.”
“They show Mom forcing Elena to kneel.”
“They show Elena refusing reasonable household expectations.”
“Reasonable?”
Daniel opened another video.
Margaret stood over Elena in the kitchen while Lucas filmed from behind a cabinet.
“You will sign before the baby arrives,” Margaret said in the recording.
Elena’s voice trembled.
“I told you I need Daniel to read the documents.”
“Daniel trusts me.”
“I do not.”
Margaret struck a glass from Elena’s hand.
It shattered across the counter.
“You entered this family with nothing. Do not pretend you have choices now.”
The recording ended.
Naomi turned toward Margaret.
“What documents?”
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“What did they want you to sign?”
“I never saw the full pages.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Elena pressed one hand against her stomach.
“Lucas told me you had approved them.”
Daniel turned toward his brother.
Lucas lifted his chin.
“You were busy.”
“You told my wife I approved documents I had never seen.”
“They were standard family papers.”
“What papers?”
Lucas looked toward Margaret.
The glance was brief.
It was enough.
Daniel searched the phone again.
One folder had been hidden behind a false calculator application.
Inside were edited versions of the abuse videos. They showed Elena shouting, pushing objects away, and crying uncontrollably.
Everything Margaret did before those reactions had been removed.
The file names contained dates extending beyond the baby’s expected birth.
March 8: Emotional episode.
March 10: Refuses medical care.
March 12: Threatens infant safety.
Elena’s due date was March 11.
“They planned future videos,” Daniel said.
Naomi examined the list.
“These labels match the language used in emergency guardianship petitions.”
Elena went still.
“Guardianship of whom?”
No one answered.
Her hand moved protectively across her stomach.
“My baby?”
Daniel crossed the foyer so quickly that Lucas backed against the wall.
“You planned to take my son.”
Lucas raised both hands.
“I did not plan anything.”
“You built a case saying Elena was unstable.”
“Mom said the trust required protection.”
Margaret’s expression sharpened.
“Be quiet.”
Lucas looked at her.
“You told me Daniel knew.”
“I said be quiet.”
The alliance between them cracked in front of everyone.
Naomi removed a small drive from the hidden phone folder and gave it to the federal investigator.
While he copied the contents, another video began playing automatically.
It had been recorded the previous night.
Margaret sat at Daniel’s desk with the banking folder open.
Lucas stood beside her.
“If Elena gives birth before the waiver is filed, the Vale transfer activates,” he said.
Margaret answered calmly.
“Then she will not remain competent long enough to control it.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Daniel looked from the screen to his mother.
“What did you intend to do to her?”
Margaret’s face remained cold.
May you like
“Protect this family from a woman who does not understand what she inherited.”
Continue to the next part: The banking folder contains a forged medical declaration designed to place Elena and her unborn child under Margaret’s control.
