Chapter 9 - Why He Chose Me

I did not want the answer.
That did not stop it.
Daniel had researched me eight months before we met.
He attended the Bennett Precision charity gala because I would be there.
Ticket purchased under a vendor company.
He approached me beside the auction table.
Spilled wine accidentally.
Apologized.
Made me laugh.
Our first meeting had been designed.
Was the entire relationship?
Mara refused to speculate.
We looked at digital history.
Daniel searched:
Emily Bennett social media.
Emily Bennett boyfriend.
Emily Bennett college.
Emily Bennett Indianapolis.
Then after first date:
Emily Bennett mother.
Bennett Precision ownership.
After third:
Bennett family trust agreement.
Then messages to Sarah? They were long broken up.
To a friend:
Met Jack Bennett’s daughter.
Friend:
That sounds dangerous.
Daniel:
Maybe useful.
My stomach turned.
Another two weeks later:
She’s not what I expected.
Friend:
What does that mean?
Daniel:
Nice.
Then:
I think I actually like her.
I hated that.
Because it meant both.
He approached me for reason.
Then developed feelings.
Later:
Friend:
Still seeing Bennett girl?
Daniel:
Yeah.
Friend:
For money?
Daniel:
Shut up.
Then six months:
I’m in love with her.
Maybe true.
Then wedding.
No direct messages about shares.
For first two years, financial interest seemed quiet.
Then Hale Restoration began failing.
Victor grievance returned.
One message:
DANIEL:
I married into the one family that could save this and Emily won’t even ask.
Friend:
Ask what?
DANIEL:
Her dad could invest.
Friend:
Then ask.
Daniel:
Jack would rather watch me drown.
Then:
Maybe Emily’s shares aren’t really Jack’s decision.
There.
He shifted.
From asking Dad.
To using me.
Then one message after Dad refused a business loan:
DANIEL:
He still thinks I’m Victor.
Friend:
You hid who Victor was from Emily.
Daniel:
Because Jack made him poison.
Blame.
Then:
If Emily knew what Bennett did to Dad she’d understand.
He never told me.
Why?
Because he knew I might ask court records.
Victor was guilty.
The story he needed could not survive documents.
Then my fracture.
Mara found a message sent ten minutes after I fell.
To Margaret:
She found the bag.
Not:
She fell.
Not:
She’s hurt.
She found the bag.
My escape bag.
His panic began because I planned to leave.
Then:
MARGARET:
Did you hurt her?
Daniel did not answer.
Later:
DANIEL:
Hospital. Leg broken.
Margaret:
What happened?
Daniel:
She fought me.
Lie.
Then:
MARGARET:
Do not go there angry.
He went.
The hospital attack was not planned as part of financial scheme.
It was rage after losing control.
But he brought documents because he saw opportunity.
That distinction mattered.
Then Dad asked me:
“Do you still love him?”
I hated him for asking.
Then realized he was not accusing.
“I don’t know.”
Truth.
Four years of marriage.
A child.
Good mornings.
Birthdays.
He held my hand during Emma’s delivery.
Made pancakes shaped like rabbits.
Then broke my leg.
Love does not disappear on schedule.
Dad nodded.
“You don’t have to know.”
Finally.
Then Emma came in with a social worker.
She climbed carefully beside me.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Daddy bad?”
My chest broke.
I answered:
“Daddy did something very wrong.”
“Is he coming home?”
“No.”
Not now.
Maybe not for a long time.
Then she touched my cast.
“Did I do signal right?”
I kissed her forehead.
“Perfect.”
She smiled.
Then:
“The lady on phone was scary.”
Mara laughed from doorway.
May you like
“Fair.”
For the first time since hospital, Emma laughed too.
