Chapter 15 - What He Meant to Do

Daniel’s statement lasted four hours.

I read transcript later.

Not all at once.

He admitted researching me.

Attending fundraiser.

Starting conversation deliberately.

Why?

At twenty two he wanted to see “what the Bennett family was really like.”

He expected arrogance.

He found me.

He liked me.

Then loved me.

He stopped thinking about revenge for a while.

That was his version.

Digital history supported a long gap in Bennett searches during early relationship.

Then Dad refused to invest in Hale Restoration three years into marriage.

Old anger returned.

Daniel discovered my shares would become more flexible at twenty seven.

He began building plan.

At first legitimate:

Convince me to invest $250,000.

I said no without knowing full reason.

He asked me casually:

“If I ever needed capital, would you back me?”

I said:

“I don’t mix marriage and business.”

He heard rejection.

Then he asked Dad.

Dad refused.

Then he borrowed from Margaret.

Business worsened.

He began forging preliminary paperwork “to see if deal was possible.”

His phrase.

Then fake approvals.

Then plan to put final documents in front of me under pressure.

He believed if lender, his mother, employees, and our mortgage all depended on signature, I would give in.

Maybe.

Then I started pulling away.

Opened account.

Called lawyer.

Packed bag.

He panicked.

The night my leg broke, he confronted me.

He admitted grabbing hair.

Admitted shoving.

Said he did not intend fracture.

Plausible.

Then after fall, he saw hospital as opportunity.

He returned home for documents.

At hospital, he planned to say:

“Sign and we fix everything.”

Instead he found me hiding phone.

He lost control again.

He admitted dragging me off bed.

Going after Emma.

Picking up IV stand.

He claimed he never intended to hit child.

Police body camera showed he raised stand toward officer, not Emma.

Good distinction.

Then power of attorney.

Forged.

Guardianship.

He intended filing only if I refused and left.

He admitted using recordings to portray instability.

He denied planning to have me committed long term.

Maybe.

Then Margaret.

He said she knew some forgery.

She denied.

Evidence mixed.

Prosecutor eventually charged her with limited document fraud and false statement, not conspiracy to assault.

She negotiated plea later.

Then Daniel said something about Dad.

“I wanted Jack to know what it felt like to have someone take what he loved and call it legal.”

He saw my shares as Victor’s stolen justice.

Then investigator asked:

“Emily?”

Silence.

“She became part of it.”

That sentence destroyed whatever remained.

Part.

Not wife.

Not mother of child.

Part of old war.

Then:

“I thought if I saved company, I could fix marriage later.”

No.

You cannot use someone and plan love as repayment.

Then transcript final:

“I knew she was afraid of me.”

“How long?”

“About a year.”

“Why didn’t you stop?”

“Because fear worked.”

I closed document.

That was enough.

No romantic uncertainty left.

He may have loved me.

He also chose fear because it worked.

Then I called my divorce lawyer.

“Proceed.”

She already was.

But saying it mattered.

Then Dad asked what I would do with shares.

I said:

May you like

“Not today.”

Good.
