Chapter 5 - Before Daniel Said Hello

The report was twelve pages.

My college.

Address.

Father.

Mother.

Bennett Precision ownership.

Approximate family net worth.

My mother’s estate.

Even an old newspaper article about her funeral.

Daniel had paid a private data service eight months before we met.

Why?

His attorney later claimed Daniel had been researching “potential clients and investors.”

I was neither.

Mara asked:

“Did Daniel ever tell you his father worked for Bennett Precision?”

“No.”

“Did he ever use the name Mercer?”

“No.”

Dad stared at the report.

He looked older by the minute.

“I should have told you about Victor.”

“How could you know Daniel was his son?”

“I didn’t at first.”

“At first?”

He hesitated.

There it was.

“When did you know?”

“Two years ago.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew for two years?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Margaret Hale attended a funeral for a former Bennett Precision employee.

Dad saw her.

Daniel beside her.

He recognized her.

Then public records confirmed Daniel Hale was Victor Mercer’s son.

“What did you do?”

“I hired Tom.”

I turned toward the retired detective.

“You investigated my husband?”

Tom nodded.

“Quietly.”

“For two years?”

“Intermittently.”

I felt sick.

“You both knew and said nothing.”

Dad leaned forward.

“I found no evidence Daniel had committed a crime against you.”

“He lied about who his father was.”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn’t that enough?”

“Because people aren’t responsible for their parents.”

Correct.

Infuriatingly.

Dad said he did confront Daniel privately.

I stared.

“When?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

“What happened?”

Daniel claimed he changed his surname legally as a teenager because he wanted no connection to Victor.

He said he knew Dad would judge him.

He asked Dad not to destroy our marriage over his father’s crime.

Dad agreed not to tell me immediately.

“You made that decision for me.”

“Yes.”

His voice broke.

“I was wrong.”

I turned away.

My father had hidden truth because he thought he was protecting me.

Daniel had hidden truth because he wanted access.

Different motives.

Same result.

I did not get to choose.

Then Mara asked Dad:

“Did Victor ever recover the stolen money?”

“Mostly through restitution and asset seizure.”

“Any dispute?”

“Victor claimed some money was owed to him.”

“For what?”

He believed he had helped build the company and deserved equity.

He argued Laura had promised future shares.

No written agreement.

Court rejected.

Victor spent years telling people Bennett family had “stolen his company.”

Daniel grew up hearing that.

Then Tom said:

“We found old social media posts.”

Daniel at twenty.

Private account.

My father ruined my family.

Another:

Bennett money was built on people like my dad.

Then one post two years before Daniel met me:

Someday they’ll pay back what they took.

I stared.

Not proof he married me for revenge.

But impossible to ignore.

Then Mara asked:

“Do you want to know everything we find?”

I almost laughed.

“Yes.”

No more protection.

Then hospital nurse entered.

“Mrs. Hale, orthopedic surgeon wants to evaluate your leg again.”

Fine.

Life still had bones beneath mysteries.

After examination, they scheduled surgery for morning.

My fracture needed fixation.

Daniel remained in custody overnight on hospital assault charges and suspected domestic battery from home pending further investigation.

No bail decision yet.

Emma slept in Dad’s arms in the family waiting room.

I watched through doorway.

Rabbit pajamas.

Thumb near her mouth.

Then Tom approached.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“When I copied Daniel’s folder, I found a handwritten note.”

He showed me.

Friday:

Emily signs ratification.

If refuses, use incapacity route.

Jack must not know until closing.

Friday was three days away.

“What is incapacity route?”

Tom looked at the forged power of attorney.

May you like

Then at my broken leg.

“I think we’re about to find out.”
