Chapter 22 - Jack’s Heart Attack

Dad had a heart attack at sixty eight.

Small.

If any heart attack can be called small.

He called me from hospital himself.

“I’m fine.”

I nearly screamed.

Then remembered.

Believe symptoms.

Ask questions.

I drove.

He needed a stent.

Recovery good.

But the event forced another kind of planning.

Dad had always held too much personally.

Company board roles.

Property.

Family trust.

We reviewed.

He gave me documents.

Not instructions.

Options.

His will named me executor.

I said no.

He looked offended.

“Why?”

“Use professional co executor.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

We chose attorney plus me if I wanted at time.

Healthcare proxy:

Me.

Backup:

Tom? Tom had died? We haven't said. Let's have Tom alive older. Maybe not. Use cousin.

Dad asked:

“If I’m unconscious, are you going to make me eat hospital pudding?”

“Yes.”

“Cruel.”

Normal.

Then he said:

“I understand why you didn’t call me first.”

The secret phone.

Years later.

“What?”

“You needed someone who could act without becoming your father.”

Mara.

A professional.

Dad smiled.

“I would’ve broken Daniel’s jaw.”

“I know.”

“Would’ve felt good.”

“For five minutes.”

“Maybe ten.”

I laughed.

Then serious:

“I’m glad you chose better.”

That was the apology completing itself.

Not words.

Understanding.

Then Emma visited.

She was eleven.

Brought rabbit drawing.

Asked Grandpa:

“Did Mom save you?”

He said:

“No. Doctors did.”

Good.

No hero mythology.

Then Bennett Precision.

The outside CEO performed well.

Company grew.

My shares worth more.

I joined board eventually at thirty two.

Not because family expected.

Because I had learned enough and wanted it.

My first board meeting, I used Mom’s fountain pen.

Wrote notes.

No grand speech.

Dad sat at end as retired chair emeritus for one meeting.

Then stopped attending.

He let go.

That may have been hardest thing he ever did.

Then Emma decided she wanted one supervised video call with Daniel.

I did not attend.

Therapist did.

Afterward she came home quiet.

“How was it?”

“He cried.”

“Okay.”

“I didn’t.”

“Okay.”

“He said sorry.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“I don’t know if I love him.”

“You don’t have to decide.”

She hugged me.

No secret signal.

Just hug.

Contact remained occasional video under therapist.

No overnight.

No private.

May you like

Daniel followed rules.

At least now.
