Chapter 8 - Victor Recovery Fund

The account name sounded like revenge.
It was actually Daniel’s private nickname for an investment reserve.
He transferred:
$4,000.
$7,500.
$12,000.
Whenever business had extra cash.
Total over three years:
$186,000.
Where did it go?
First, legal research into Bennett Precision.
Old court files.
Victor’s criminal case.
Company valuations.
Then private investigators.
Me.
Dad.
Shareholder agreements.
Then stock options?
No.
Daniel could not buy Bennett Precision privately because company shares were restricted.
So he studied transfer rules.
At twenty seven, my shares would become fully voting and more freely transferable within family restrictions.
Eleven months.
Why rush now?
Because Hale Restoration could not survive eleven months.
Then the private loan from Victor Mercer Holdings.
Margaret had inherited Victor’s remaining assets and formed holding company.
She lent Daniel $140,000 two years ago.
Why call it Victor Recovery?
Daniel viewed saving his business as restoring what Victor lost.
Then accountant, Peter Hale unrelated family? Better name Nathan Cole. He testified:
Daniel often said:
“My father built Bennett before they threw him out.”
False.
Victor was controller, not founder.
Another:
“One day I’ll own part of what should have been his.”
Then after marrying me:
“I guess life has a sense of humor.”
Nathan thought joke.
Now not funny.
Then one spreadsheet:
EMILY EQUITY PATH.
Scenario A:
Voluntary pledge.
Scenario B:
Family buyout.
Scenario C:
Temporary authority during incapacity.
There.
Written nine months ago.
Before my leg.
Before divorce plan.
He had considered incapacity as financial route.
What did that mean?
Possibly legal power if I became unable.
Not necessarily plan to injure.
Then a column:
Trigger event.
Medical hospitalization.
Mental health crisis.
Custody dispute.
I felt sick.
Daniel had brainstormed situations where my control could be weakened.
Then Dad saw another column.
JACK INTERFERENCE.
High.
Mitigation:
Delay notice.
Use family confidentiality.
Obtain Emily signature before company counsel reviews.
Daniel knew Dad would stop him.
Then:
MARGARET SUPPORT.
Medium.
She had been categorized too.
Not mastermind.
Tool.
Then one more name:
SARAH PIKE.
Who?
Daniel’s ex fiancée.
Dad knew.
I did not.
I thought Daniel had only one serious relationship before me.
Sarah Pike had lived with him for three years.
Engaged.
Then ended.
Mara contacted her.
She lived in Cincinnati.
Her first response:
“Did he finally hurt someone badly enough that people listened?”
My stomach tightened.
Sarah had filed a domestic incident report eight years ago.
No charges.
She withdrew cooperation.
Why?
Daniel threatened to tell her employer she abused prescription medication.
She was a nurse.
He had taken photos of her sleeping after legitimate medication and claimed she was addicted.
Same pattern.
Discredit first.
Then control.
Did he have financial motive with Sarah?
No.
That mattered.
Daniel’s abuse did not begin with my shares.
Greed intensified it.
Did not create it.
Then Sarah said something else.
“His father was all he talked about when he drank.”
Victor.
“He said powerful families destroy ordinary men and then call them criminals.”
“Did he mention Bennett?”
“Yes.”
Years before meeting me.
Daniel had carried that grievance long before knowing my face.
Then Mara asked Sarah:
“Did Daniel ever say he wanted revenge?”
“Not exactly.”
“What did he say?”
Sarah thought.
May you like
“He said if he ever got close to the Bennetts, he would make sure they paid attention.”
He did.
