Chapter 10 - The Blue Folder

Tom Wade handed the original blue folder to police.
Daniel had been looking for copies.
He never knew Tom had originals.
Inside were things even I had not noticed.
A lender email:
We still require direct ratification from Emily Hale before Friday.
That was the deadline.
Then:
If ratification is not received, facility will be canceled and existing bridge note called.
Existing bridge note?
Hale Restoration already owed Midwest Commonwealth $210,000 short term.
The $640,000 loan would refinance and expand.
If canceled, bank could demand bridge repayment.
Daniel did not have it.
Then creditor notice.
Payroll taxes.
Equipment.
Subcontractors.
Hale Restoration could collapse within weeks.
Not necessarily bankrupt forever.
But severe.
Then share pledge document.
My twenty eight percent interest valued at $3.4 million.
Loan only $640,000.
Overcollateralized.
Why?
Bank knew private company stock illiquid.
Still.
If default, could bank seize shares?
Not easily because transfer restrictions.
The lender required company consent.
Forged.
Thus ratification from me and real company counsel became final barrier.
Daniel planned to get my signature Friday.
He did not know the bank had already independently emailed Bennett Precision.
Dad’s attorney replied:
No consent.
Fraud suspected.
The loan was effectively dead before my leg broke.
Again.
Daniel nearly destroyed us for a transaction already failing.
Then Dad asked company counsel:
“When did you flag it?”
Two days before hospital.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Counsel had left voicemail.
Dad was traveling for a supplier meeting.
He had not listened.
Tiny timing.
Then one page in blue folder:
Draft settlement agreement between Daniel and me.
If separation occurs:
Emily transfers five percent Bennett shares to Daniel as marital equalization.
I stared.
“Our prenup.”
We had one.
My Bennett shares were separate.
Daniel knew.
Draft tried to reverse.
Not signed.
Then:
Custody provision.
Emma primary residence with Daniel if Emily “requires inpatient mental health treatment.”
He had prepared a future where my alleged instability gave him child and shares.
Again, not valid just because drafted.
But intent.
Then Mara asked:
“Who prepared this?”
Law firm letterhead.
Barton & Fields.
Attorney:
Samuel Barton.
He met with police.
He said Daniel asked for hypothetical documents.
Daniel told him Emily was considering voluntary investment and separation planning.
Barton advised independent counsel.
Never saw Emily.
He refused to finalize without her lawyer.
Daniel took drafts anyway.
So not every professional was corrupt.
Good.
Then blue folder had a small USB drive.
I had not opened.
Tom had not either.
Police imaged it.
Files:
Audio recordings.
Me.
At home.
Arguments.
Daniel secretly recorded.
One clip:
ME:
I can’t do this anymore.
DANIEL:
Do what?
ME:
Everything. I feel like I’m losing my mind.
He had labeled:
EMILY INSTABILITY 1.
Another:
ME:
Sometimes I want to disappear.
Context:
After Mom’s death anniversary.
He labeled:
SELF HARM LANGUAGE.
Then one recording:
ME:
If you touch me again, I swear I’ll kill you.
I remembered.
He had grabbed my throat during an argument.
I was terrified.
He kept only my sentence.
No video.
No preceding audio? Actually file started mid argument.
He was building a case just like Ray in prior story? We must not cross. Fine.
Then one clip had something unexpected.
Daniel forgot recorder running after I left room.
His mother Margaret entered.
MARGARET:
You’re pushing too hard.
DANIEL:
She’ll cave.
MARGARET:
And if she leaves?
DANIEL:
She won’t.
MARGARET:
How do you know?
DANIEL:
Because Jack taught her family means staying.
Dad closed his eyes.
Daniel understood our family values and weaponized them.
Then Margaret:
This is starting to sound like your father.
Silence.
Daniel:
Maybe he was right about them.
Margaret:
Victor was a thief.
Everything stopped.
May you like
Daniel had been told the truth by his own mother.
He chose the myth anyway.
