Chapter 9 - What Daniel Recorded
There were fourteen recordings.
Not all dramatic.
That was what made them strong.
People did not sound like villains plotting in shadows.
They sounded like family discussing logistics over coffee.
Recording four:
Jessica:
What if Maya says she wants all three?
Eleanor:
She will at first.
Richard:
People say many things immediately after surgery.
Daniel:
That is not consent.
Richard:
No one said it was.
Then five minutes later:
Richard:
We need her signature before David gets back.
Contradiction.
Recording five:
Eleanor:
Maya trusts me when she is scared.
Daniel:
That’s not something to brag about.
Eleanor:
It means I can calm her.
Jessica:
Or convince her.
Then laughter.
Daniel did not laugh.
Recording six:
Jessica:
What if we take him home for one night so she understands she can survive with two?
Daniel:
Absolutely not.
Richard:
Don’t be theatrical.
Daniel:
That is kidnapping.
Silence.
First time word appeared.
Richard:
Not if family authorizes temporary care.
Daniel:
Maya is family who authorizes.
Then Richard ended conversation.
Daniel had line.
Why not tell me?
He explained later.
Richard called him next morning.
Apologized.
Said:
“Of course Maya must consent.”
Daniel believed retreat.
Then recording seven, two weeks later.
Richard had shifted again.
“People only know what they’re ready to know.”
Daniel:
“What does that mean?”
No answer.
Recording eight:
Eleanor and Jessica without Daniel? How did Daniel record? He left phone hidden after family dinner. That could be questionable but one-party consent? He wasn't party. Recording legality could matter. Better he left his own phone after stepping away; may be unlawfully obtained. Some recordings might not be admissible. Need maybe Texas one-party consent requires party to communication; leaving device when not present is not legal. So avoid. All recordings must include Daniel, who is party. Fine.
Recording eight included Daniel quiet.
Eleanor:
If Maya fights, have nurse give her something for anxiety.
Daniel:
You cannot request medication for another adult.
Jessica:
Hospitals give nervous people things.
Daniel:
Not because you ask.
Richard:
Then we handle paperwork later.
Daniel:
No.
Then he stopped recording and left.
Recording nine:
David trip.
Richard:
Malcolm moved London.
Daniel:
You called his boss?
Richard:
I recommended talent.
Daniel:
You manipulated schedule.
Richard:
I created opportunity.
Daniel:
For business?
Richard:
For everyone.
There.
Then recording ten:
Jessica:
I bought Nathan clothes.
Daniel:
His name isn’t Nathan.
Jessica:
Not yet.
Daniel:
There is no “yet.”
Then argument.
Jessica cried.
Called Daniel cruel.
Said infertility had destroyed her while his sister “collected babies.”
Daniel almost stopped recording forever.
Instead he started therapy privately.
Interesting.
His therapist told him:
“You cannot resolve infertility by appropriating someone else’s child.”
Daniel had described plan as family pressure.
Therapist urged him to warn me.
He did not.
Why?
Shame.
He did not want me to know he had ever imagined taking one.
Then recording eleven:
Daniel finally said:
“If anyone touches one of Maya’s babies, I go to police.”
Richard:
No you won’t.
“Why?”
“Because Jessica will be charged too.”
Exactly.
Richard knew leverage.
Daniel loved his wife.
He thought he could stop family without exposing her.
Richard counted on.
Then recording twelve.
Day before London.
Eleanor:
David leaves tomorrow.
Daniel:
And nothing happens.
Richard:
We visit after birth like normal family.
Daniel:
Promise.
Richard:
Fine.
No clear promise.
Then recording thirteen:
Hospital morning, in car.
Richard:
We make proposal once.
Daniel:
No.
Jessica:
Daniel.
Daniel:
No.
Richard:
Then stay in car.
Daniel:
I’m going in because I don’t trust you.
That was better.
Then recording fourteen, maybe Daniel's phone in pocket until security? It captured lobby.
Richard:
Remember, Maya is weak.
Daniel:
If you say that again, I send recordings.
He sent to Richard.
Then hospital room events were also partly captured on Richard’s phone open player? The phone wasn't recording then, just playing. But hospital security footage and witness enough.
Detective Cole said:
“These recordings help establish Daniel’s changing position. They also show he knew.”
I nodded.
“Both.”
No hero.
No villain.
A man who woke too slowly.
Then the prosecutor asked if I would oppose limited contact from Daniel during investigation.
“Yes.”
Not punishment.
Need space.
Then Noah had apnea episode.
Caleb needed feeding tube.
Grace had jaundice.
Our lives became neonatal medicine.
For three days, the criminal case was outside the room.
I learned to feed through tiny syringe.
David learned diaper around wires.
We slept in shifts.
Then one morning, Grace gripped my finger.
I cried.
David smiled.
“Strong.”
No.
Not strong.
Just alive.
