Chapter 6 - The London Ticket

Malcolm Reed cooperated immediately.

Richard had known him twenty years earlier through a transportation infrastructure board.

Not close friends.

Professional acquaintances.

A month before David’s trip, Richard called.

Casual.

Then he said:

“My son in law is restless with all the pregnancy stress. Give him something important.”

Malcolm laughed.

Richard continued:

“The London closing needs someone people trust.”

Malcolm already considered David.

Then Richard pushed timing.

“Why wait until next month? Markets move.”

Malcolm told detectives he had no idea Maya was carrying high risk triplets.

Richard said due date was “plenty far away.”

False.

My doctors had repeatedly warned delivery could happen anytime after thirty two weeks.

Dad knew.

He had received updates from Eleanor.

Malcolm moved London meeting forward by nine days partly because Richard framed urgency.

Was that criminal?

Maybe not by itself.

But evidence of planning.

Then one email from Richard to Malcolm:

David will be grateful for the opportunity. Maya has plenty of family around her.

I almost laughed.

Family.

Then Dad texted Eleanor after Malcolm confirmed:

Window is set.

Eleanor:

What if she delivers before he leaves?

Richard:

Then we lose nothing.

They were waiting for chance.

My premature labor was not caused by them.

No mysterious medication.

No tampered food.

Nothing.

Chance gave them opportunity.

Planning turned opportunity into attempted taking.

Then David confronted his boss.

Not angrily.

Malcolm apologized.

“I was used.”

David answered:

“So was I.”

The company covered emergency travel and extended leave.

The merger still happened without David.

No career destroyed.

Richard had sold London as irreplaceable.

It was not.

Then forged signatures.

Forensic document examiner compared.

The signature on “Maya Consent” was an exact digital duplicate of my signature from the baby shower catering agreement.

Same pixel artifacts.

Copied.

Not hand forged.

Metadata showed Jessica created PDF on her laptop.

Eleanor emailed scanned signature.

Subject:

Use this one. Cleaner.

My mother.

Then Richard replied:

Do not print until delivery.

Why?

Date would be added afterward.

They planned to make it look recent.

Then there was blank notarization block.

No notary signature yet.

Did they have one?

Jessica had contacted mobile notary named Claire Rowan.

She told Claire:

“My sister in law will sign family guardianship after delivery.”

Claire replied:

“I will only notarize if signer appears personally, is alert, and confirms voluntarily.”

Jessica:

What if she is medicated after surgery?

Claire:

Then I may refuse.

Jessica never booked.

Again, legitimate professionals kept saying no.

My family kept searching for someone who would say yes.

Then hospital records.

Could Richard simply walk out with Noah?

No.

Security.

Infant bands.

Discharge procedures.

They had not thought realistically.

They believed confidence would create authority.

Richard had spent his life walking into rooms and being obeyed.

He assumed maternity ward would be same.

Then hospital administration found something disturbing.

At 6:10 a.m., before family arrived, someone called asking which triplet was “Baby A.”

The caller knew Maya Bennett.

Knew three infants.

Asked whether Baby A was male.

Staff refused information.

Phone traced to Eleanor.

My mother was checking which bassinet held firstborn son.

Then she texted Jessica:

A is Noah.

Jessica:

Perfect.

Perfect.

I stared until words blurred.

Then Grace started crying.

I picked her up.

Slowly because incision.

Nurse helped.

I whispered:

“You are not part of anyone’s plan.”

Neither was Caleb.

Neither was Noah.

Then Detective Cole asked if I wanted emergency protective order against all four.

“Yes.”

Daniel looked stricken.

“All four?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

May you like

For once, he did not ask me to make his guilt easier.

Continue to the next part: Maya bars her entire family from the hospital, including Daniel, while investigators search the house where Jessica had already prepared a nursery for “Nathan.”
