Chapter 13 - Richard’s Family Rule

Richard had one rule.

Family solves family problems.

It sounded honorable.

It meant:

No outsiders.

No therapists.

No lawyers unless his.

No police.

No boundaries that embarrassed him.

When Daniel struggled with infertility:

Keep it in family.

When Jessica wanted counseling:

Private.

When I married David:

Prenup insulted family.

When Mom wanted separate savings:

Why hide money?

Richard confused privacy with disloyalty and control with unity.

Then triplets created a family problem in his mind.

His solution had to stay inside.

One baby moved from daughter to son.

No agency.

No stranger.

No public process.

Perfect.

Except babies are people.

Then financial investigators found no money motive.

Important.

No inheritance triggered by male grandchild.

No trust.

No secret millions.

Richard was comfortable.

Retired with pension and investments.

This was not greed for cash.

It was entitlement to organize people.

That made story smaller and worse.

He believed he had jurisdiction over us.

Then another recording:

Richard:

Maya always comes around.

Daniel:

Because you wear her down.

Richard:

That is called parenting.

Daniel:

She’s thirty three.

Richard:

Children stay children.

There.

Then prosecutor prepared grand jury? Texas process varies. We can keep "case advanced to indictment" without technical detail.

Richard faced enhanced charges after evidence.

Jessica and Eleanor negotiated.

Daniel remained uncharged on conspiracy due evidence he withdrew and actively objected, though prosecutors considered failure to report not itself same offense. His recordings admissible because he was party.

His moral responsibility remained.

Then civil protective orders.

David and I obtained long term no contact against Richard and Jessica pending criminal case.

Eleanor through counsel agreed not to contact.

Daniel voluntarily agreed.

Then Richard violated.

He mailed letter to Noah.

Addressed:

NATHAN VANCE BENNETT.

I did not open.

Police documented contact violation.

His bail revoked temporarily.

He claimed clerical mistake.

No.

Then second letter intercepted by attorney:

To my first grandson.

My stomach turned.

Noah was not symbol.

I asked court to bar direct/indirect.

Granted.

Then media found story.

“Grandfather accused of trying to give triplet to infertile son.”

Horrible.

Comment sections.

Some people said:

I would happily give one to sibling.

Good for them.

Some said:

Three are too many.

Some said:

Family adoption beautiful.

They missed consent.

I stopped reading.

Then David’s company offered security.

No.

Hospital already.

Home locks changed.

We hired temporary security camera.

Not paranoia.

Reasonable.

Then the triplets discharged.

Not same day.

Noah and Grace first.

Caleb two days later.

I hated leaving Caleb.

Nurse said:

“You’re not abandoning him. You’re going home to two babies and coming back tomorrow.”

Important.

At home, I stood in nursery.

Three cribs.

For the first time, I understood enormity.

Three feeds.

Three diapers.

Three alarms in my brain.

Then Noah cried.

Grace followed.

I cried too.

David laughed.

“Good start.”

We survived first night with night nurse.

Second without.

Third badly.

May you like

But nobody had to disappear to make it manageable.

Continue to the next part: As the triplets finally come home, Richard violates the protective order by addressing Noah with the name Jessica had chosen for him.
